Sideboard

Many Magic the Gathering players have been porting over powerful Standard decks and bolstering them with older cards as they transition into the Pioneer format.

In this build we turn that on its head and attempt to port a popular Modern deck into Pioneer and see where it takes us.

Today we Are looking at a Pioneer Jeskai Combo Brew.

A couple of notes as we move forward... Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain functions in this brew in a similarly capacity as Urza, Lord High Artificer in the modern version of this deck. While not as Versatile as its Modern counterpart, both are used to draw through you deck while "comboing" off.

Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain sits in the same spot on the mana curve as Urza, Lord High Artificer and is still legendary to turn on Mox Amber .

She also sits as a 3/3 which gets her just big enough to survive Wild Slash esk* Removal making her slightly more resilient than say Artificer's Assistant .

Paradoxical Outcome helps to churn through the deck by allowing you to recast your zero drops and draw even more cards of Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain .

O.K. so with that out of the way, let's get into the meet and potatoes of this brew:

use Retraction Helix targeting any of your creatures. Bounce any of your zero-drop, non-creature, artifact(s) with either Jeskai Ascendancy or Paradox Engine on the field. You do not need these if the creature you put Retraction Helix on is Traxos, Scourge of Kroog . ( Paradox Engine sits in this build as a 1 of currently and creates redundancy so combo plays can still be made under the hate of cards like Unmoored Ego or similar effect to disrupt the ascendancy.)
With Emry, Lurker of the Loch and either Jeskai Ascendancy or Paradox Engine you can get as much stuff outta the graveyard as you need. The card your looking to combo here is Mox Amber . The cast trigger will un-tap Emry, and the legendary rule will sacrifice the Amber as long as you have 2. This means you can tap an Amber for one mana before you cast the second and sacrifice the tapped amber to the legend rule. This will net you infinite Mana.
Emry, Lurker of the Loch with any un-tap engine and Tormod's Crypt . Crypts's ability to sac itself and cost no mana allows it to be reused over rand over with Emry.

With any of these combo in play, you can either outright win by overrunning your opponent with a massive creature through Jeskai Ascendancy , or go wide by making infinite creatures using either Saheeli, Sublime Artificer or Sai, Master Thopterist .

These cast triggers build a storm count to finish your opponent off with Aetherflux Reservoir If you aren't trying to kill with the raw damage of either going wide with Thopters/Servos or pumping with with ascendancy. _You can also draw though your whole deck using Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain If you need to dig for a kill. _

Witching Well is a good dump for the infinite as an additional way to draw out your deck. Mystic Sanctuary is also a nice Snapcaster Mage for either your Paradoxical Outcome to help draw out your combos, or Retraction Helix if you had to use one early for removal or if it got countered.

As Far as interactions, when you are trying to combo out and kill with damage, there are ways to stack un-tap triggers and with the use of Retraction Helix you can use the extra un-taps to bounce your opponents whole board so that you can swing freely. Since this Version of the deck does not necessarily need to win using Retraction Helix it can freely be used as a general purpose removal spell. This and Paradoxical Outcome are great tools for overcoming problematic Oko, Thief of Crowns turning things like your Aetherflux Reservoir into a 3/3.
