Theme and Goals

A Blue / White deck for casual play. This is a kitchen table deck based on the cards I have and ones I could find locally for a moderate price.

Pattern: This type of deck typically runs:

  • 3-5 Win Conditions
  • 6-10 Counterspells
  • 4-8 Spot Removal
  • 3-6 Sweepers
  • Several Draw spells
  • Deck Plan:
The plan is to counter the opponent's most important stuff, clear the deck when needed, then drop a difficult to answer threat and swing for the win. The countrspells can also serve to protect the win condition.

  • AEtherling Difficult to answer. Versatile. Protects itself. So good, in fact, that I may swap these out for something else sometimes, just to keep it fun for the opponent.
  • Dragonlord Ojutai The theme of the deck. Has Hexproof when untapped, so we give it Vigilance if we can. (See the Helper Cards section below.) Gets us cards.
  • Pristine Skywise Beefy. Evasive. Nearly everything we cast will untap it and give it protection.
  • Counterspell Counters anything for . Best counterspell ever printed.
  • Disdainful Stroke Counters big spells.
  • Essence Scatter Counter creatures.
  • Negate Counter non-creatures.
  • Psychic Rebuttal Counter something that's aimed at you. Copy it, and toss it back.
  • Arrest Renders a creature mostly ineffective.
  • Detention Sphere Exile anything. Gets every copy. Can also be used to shelter my stuff from a sweeper. Powerful and versatile.
  • Devouring Light Exile any creature as long as it attacks or blocks.
  • Fate Forgotten When an enchantment or artifact needs exiling instead.
  • Valorous Stance Versatile. Can protect one of our creatures from the opponent or from our own sweeper. Can also get rid of a large creature.
  • Nevinyrral's Disk A little slow, but inexpensive and it gets most non-lands except plainswalkers.
  • Terminus Puts all the creatures on the bottoms of their owners' libraries. Miracle cost is very cheap. Good when the opponent has a lot of recursion going on.
  • Tragic Arrogance Let's you pick your best stuff and the opponent's weakest stuff to keep.
  • Anticipate Low cost. Get the best of your top 3 cards.
  • Foresee This is a great draw card. You get to look at your top 4 library cards and take the 2 best. If you don't see what you want, you can also take you chances with 1 or both of the next 2. If you leave all 4 inspected cards on top, you have foreknowledge of your next 2 draws, and you got to arrange their order. It just doesn't get much better than that.
  • Jace's Ingenuity Get 3 cards. A great mid-to-late-game reload.
  • Sift Not quite as good as the others in this group but still very good draw.
  • Gift of Immortality One way to protect my win condition once I bring it out. This will handle most ways my creature could be removed, including reduction of toughness to zero. Unless they exile it, remove the enchantment first, or kill it twice in the same turn, I'll get my beastie back.
  • Haven of the Spirit Dragon 60% of my creatures are dragons, so the second ability has its uses, but this is mainly here for the third ability. I'm running just 5 creatures. so it's good to have a way to get one back.
  • Marked by Honor Makes Dragonlord Ojutai a little beefier and tougher, but mainly it's there to keep him untapped and therefore hexproof while I swing with him.
  • Relic of Progenitus Helps keep graveyard recursion down.
  • Sword of Vengeance This is just incredible value. Every granted ability here is relevant. I put it in for the Vigilance to keep Dragonlord Ojutai hexproof, but Trample helps get damage through, the power buff and First Strike help to protect him, and Haste and the power buff speed things up overall.
  • Telepathy Alright, think about it for moment. It's a control deck, and for the low-low price of , I get to see my opponents' hands all the time (at least until I catch it with a sweeper at some point). Am I likely to guess wrong on what to hold mana for and what to select when I scry and draw? Like AEtherling , this card is so good I may not run it all the time. Just imagine it from the other side of the table, and you'll see why.
