Sarulf is a really interesting deckbuilding puzzle, as he indiscriminately exiles everything. As such, you can't really rely on low-cost permanents (Sol Ring, Garruk's Uprising) unless you're prepared for them to leave as soon as the next turn.

I think the general idea is to protect and nurture Sarulf while dishing out removal like morbid confetti and nuking the battlefield until he gets big enough (with mutations and/or counters) and you're able to prevent your opponent from having anything meaningful on their board then proceed to beat face.
