Midnight Hunt —Oct. 15, 2021

Midnight Hunt had a surprising amount of support for red stormy decks though only a few made it into Feather, so here's my hits and misses from the set!

IN

  • Geistflame Reservoir - it is technically card advantage, but the real selling point for this card for me is repeatable targeted removal, and at a low mana investment to boot
  • Smoldering Egg  Flip - this card is just really damn good, it flips easily and while it won't deal as much damage as Guttersnipe, it will hit anything you need it to, and it's a 4/4 flyer which doesn't hurt

OUT

  • Livewire Lash - the backside of Smoldering Egg has the same text as this basically, but without needing to be equipped and at two mana less
  • Reconstruct History - the card is good, but it's slow and only good when I'm behind, which isn't where I want card slots dedicated to

GronktheCrusader - Dualcaster Mage doesn't actually do anything for this deck other than infinite magecraft unless you're running Heat Shimmer or Twinflame, which I find to be less useful, and I'm also against infinite combos in my own decks, but it is there as an option for just an instant win if you run both cards. Empty the Warrens being 4 mana means I have to do a lot on my turn before it to be worth it, and I'd probably be close to tapping out if I were going to get a worthwhile cast off. One thing this deck really doesn't like to do is tap out completely, and without Purphoros to really solidify Empty as a real win condition (because the tokens can just get board wiped) I don't see it having much use for my personal list. If I hav enough mana to cast enough spells AND and Empty that feels worthwhile, I've already won whether I have Empty or not because of the volume of cards and other triggers I'd be getting at that point. Thanks for the suggestions though!

atingtdm - Irencrag Pyromancer actually seems quite useful, but I wouldn't swap it for Ripley Vance in my list because of the numerous ways I can buff Ripley outside of it's own ability, meaning I can stock up power and then use this as a one shot, where Irencrag can only ever do 12 damage a turn cycle. That being said, I think it's a worthwhile card to test as it isn't hard to pull off that damage. I'm not a personal fan of Chandra's Ignition because it has exactly one function essentially and that function is win the game. You could treat it like Blasphemous Act, but none of my creatures get truly sizable on their own except Ripley Vance, and even that is a slow buildup, so I wouldn't even consider it a reliable board wipe. For those reasons, I don't personally see myself running it, but if you like it or are having success with it, then more power to you. Thanks for the comment!

Dhampir05 - Deflecting Swat feels a bit redundant because of my protection spells, but I have actually recently added Flawless Maneuver in place of Boros Charm beceause they serve the same function basically (the other modes on Boros Charm see very little use for me) and Flawless is always free when it matters. I actually feel Swat being free doesn't make up for the fact that I would rather soft counter a spell with protection for 1 mana AND get that spell back than pay 0 and get a kill spell out of it basically but only once. If I just had 101 slots it might make the cut, but I can't cut a real protection spell for this and I certainly don't have a one time use protection spell on the front burner for new additions, especially with the way Midnight Hunt is looking for this deck. Thanks for the comment though!

New Changelog coming soon, I've made quite a few changes to this that aren't related to new set releases, but just reevaluating old cards. Thanks everyone for all your comments, suggestions, and upvotes as alwways!

What do you think about Raze the Effigy? Or Light of Hope? Raze is Instant speed 1 mana that doubles as either removal or a pump effect that also benefits heroic. Light of Hope is similar that it can also destroy enchantments but also target your own creature to trigger heroic and put a counter on it
