New Changes —Sept. 4, 2021

This changelog is not associated with a new set drop, just been reevaluating some old cards and trying some new ones! Let's dig in!

IN

  • Chrome Mox - I wanted this in for a long time, it costs 0 and makes colored mana, couldn't ask for better
  • Dragon's Rage Channeler - this card will be considered by some to be a strict downgrade to Burning Prophet, however, with Past in Flames and Underworld Breach in the list, alongside card:Movina, Students' Advocate, being able to filter extra land drops to the graveyard to fuel Breach or simply skip past an excessive mana rock feels valuable to me; as an aside, I'll be completely honest, I just love this card and it works somewhat well in this deck so I shoved it in, but I do genuinely think it has value
  • Esper Sentinel - this deck doesn't struggle with card draw, but dropping this turn 1 is a game changer and will probably draw you an immense amount of cards that your opponents simply won't be able to recover from; plus, this works really well if players get into counter wars around you often
  • Flagstones of Trokair - this one was weird for me, because I usually cut lands, not add them, but the deck has been struggling with hitting early land drops, so I went up one, and may go up another in the near future if I feel it's necessary
  • Heal - the slow-trips are back because for one mana they're just too good, and they also bumped my cantrip count up by one, so that never hurts; they are objectively the worst ones in the deck, but unless you're behind or in a pinch, they do the job
  • Panic - see Heal
  • Urza's Saga - this is one I'm not sold on yet, but the Karnstructs aren't going to be small in this deck, and it can fetch any of the 0 drop mana rocks or Sol Ring, so it's never going to be mana negative; play this one at your own discretion because I'm not sold on it yet, but I think it's worth testing further so I'm including it

OUT

  • Accelerate - put in Panic for this, 1 mana versus 2 makes a huge deal
  • Chaos Warp - honestly I just hate this card; it's one of the best cards in red objectively, but I hate it, so I cut it
  • Rionya, Fire Dancer - too slow, win more, 5 mana, I could go on, but the card just wasn't performing
  • Sentinel Tower - an excellent win condition and removal piece for this deck, but it's just too slow and tapping out for it feels atrocious
  • Thought Vessel - cut this for Chrome Mox because the Reliquary Tower text isn't worth it making colorless mana and costing mana to do it
  • Tibalt's Trickery - this card is good, but this deck has enough ways to be proactive, and my meta has a lot of decks where you can have your opponent flip into something way worse than whatever you're countering, so this had to get the axe
  • Volcanic Torrent - 5 mana is just too slow and requires too much setup similar to what I'm talking about with Empty the Warrens in the latest comment, if a card wants to have Storm and be in this deck, it's got to be cheap

Heya! Just wanted to try Feather out as a Commander and your deck seems like a ton of fun to play! Love the thought process and work you've done with this primer! I got some questions if you wouldnt mind (which ARE'NT about either Sunforger or Aurelia's Fury xD)? I do have a Imperial Recruiter and Recruiter of the Guard which I feel kinda interested to add into the deck for tutoring key creatures like Storm-Kiln Artist, Monastery Mentor and other juicy stuff. Would it be a bad idea slotting in either of those two instead for Captain Ripley Vance and/or Velomachus Lorehold? Still I haven't tried the deck out at all yet, how do you feel those two cards play-out for you atm?

Cheers!

TerraBlaze - Thanks for the feedbcack, I'm glad you liked it! You can certainly swap out those creatures for the Recruiters. I had the recruiters in the deck a while ago, but because I don't run much blink, and because the creature base has changed so much over the years, the list of targets they could hit was small enough that they weren't really worth it, but with the addition of Storm-Kiln specifically they certainly aren't bad to have. Velomachus is likely the worst card in the 99, but it's really cool so I'm not going to cut it for now in my own list. Thanks for the comment!

Wow, I get actual get to make an original comment!

First, If your looking for an additional wincon, Dualcaster Mage is a great option. Combos pretty easily with cloudshift.

Second. Empty the Warrens. With several haste enablers, you can really close out a game fast off one draw if the game stalls.

Control_Train I notice that you're not running Deflecting Swat or Flawless Maneuver. Is there any particular reason for not including these? I know we don't get them back with feather but I feel they fill enough of a role that our other spells don't cover that it's worth, especially Deflecting Swat.

Hey, this deck is amazing! But I recommend using Irencrag Pyromancer instead of Captain Ripley Vance, it is faster and easier to continue to get rewards.

By the way, how about Chandra's Ignition?
