First Major Update —May 5, 2019

Firstly I'd like to say thank you to everyone who has commented, left feedback or suggestions, upvoted, with special thanks to my irl friends for constantly letting me test this and bounce ideas off of them. Currently floating between #1 and #2 Feather deck sitewide depending on whether or not Sun's Champions list actually shows up in the search, so huge thanks to everyone who made that possible. Onto the changes!

IN

  • Shelter - drawing a card is just too big a benefit to ignore on a protection spell
  • Faith's Shield - works very well with Feather herself, but is also very useful at protecting other things like lands or equipments
  • Temur Battle Rage - I've been back and forth on this, but I think it's a little too good not to have given that Tenth District Legionnaire and Phalanx Leader can make huge attackers
  • Psychotic Fury - another one I've been in and out with, but Feather having flying is a pretty big evasion tool on it's own, so drawing a card attached to a combat trick is pretty useful
  • Tenth District Legionnaire - I've cut this a few times but keep coming back to it, the fact that it gets big is really nice with Soul's Fire and Temur Battle Rage, but also being a scry engine early is important
  • Silverclad Ferocidons - a weird one, but I saw this in another list and thought it might be a pretty nice win condition; it leans a little heavier into the self-damaging cards, but it combos so smoothly with Grapeshot that if I untap with this thing, I generally just win
  • Spawning Breath - I think of this as a ramp spell mostly, even if it is only colorless mana; ramping up to be able to hold up the two and three mana spells on everyone's turn or using these to play and attach equipments is pretty nice
  • Mistveil Plains - shoutout to whoever commented about this a few days ago, I've seen it in a lot of lists and never truly understood it's potential until that person pointed it out so thanks for that
  • Also added fetchlands for fixing reasons and because I had them lying around, but they certainly aren't necessary
  • Leering Emblem - this card does two things; it either turns Feather into a commander damage win condition or just beefs up a creature to the max for attacking/fling purposes
  • Aetherflux Reservoir - no, this is not a combo deck now; the card just seems like a good engine in this deck by providing life padding and an eventuality to win should it spiral out of control
  • Sentinel Tower - turn all of my cantrips into Grapeshots, hell yea bro; sucks to cut a heroic card for this but this spirals out of control a lot faster and doesn't require targeting letting me get my heroic on something else while still getting damage to fling around OUT
    • Long Road Home - useful for protecting a single creature from boardwipes, but not that good as a spot protection spell, so for that reason it got cut for Faith's Shield
    • Otherworldly Journey - see above, cut this one for Shelter; at two mana drawing a card is better than having a niche utility
    • Titan's Strength - the power and scry is nice, but not good enough personally; cut this for Temur Battle Rage
    • Stand Firm - this was essentially just a scry engine more than anything, but scrying isn't always useful; cut this for Psychotic Fury because the raw draw is generally more useful on top of being a better combat trick
    • Setessan Battle Priest - yea bad card is bad basically; life gain is neat but does nothing for the deck, cut this for Tenth District Legionnaire as a better early two drop
    • Fell the Mighty - not going to lie, I hated this card before I tested it and I've hated it since; I see it in a lot of lists and I get it, but I think my build plays onto the board too much for this to be really useful; cut this for Ferocidons as a pseudo-board wipe and actual win condition
    • Chrome Mox - the worst of the moxen because of card disadvantage and literally every card in this deck having so much utility I don't like to exile it; cut this for Spawning Breath as a better ramp option
    • Strength of Arms - only having two or three equipments made this unplayable mostly; cut for Leering Emblem
    • Sword of the Animist - the slowest of the ramp options and just not that good honestly; cut for Aetherflux Fishbowl
    • Labyrinth Champion - this card is really, really good, but at four mana Sentinel Tower is just plain better
    • 5x Plains, 2x Mountain and Temple of Triumph for the Mistveil Plains and fetchlands

Have you considered Intimidation Bolt ?

the ability permafog the opponents might be better than a 4th card to make everything indestructible.

Other stuff: I think you might have missed this if you want targeted removal: Fall of the Hammer if you need/want the ability to destroy utility lands: Seismic Shift possibly Bathe in Light ?

you need to consider if you want some of the spells you have included or not. like Make a Stand or Rootborn Defenses . they are great cards, but they are a 1 time use, since they sdon't target anything, so they are a one and done deal. the spell needs to say "target creature or creatures" on it or it's no good unless you don't mind the one time use of course.

Fall of the hammer is nice. 4 cmc kills me on the LD spell, I’m actually about to cut all the 2 drops and re run test games. The deck is lean af and even the 2 drops are too inefficient. Bathe in light, don’t like protection spells really bc they’re reactive and not proactive. Worth testing though, might try them.

The indestructible spells feel like a must have because if the deck gets board wiped it isn’t as bad as other decks but it’s so nice to have that protection. Eerie Interlude is the best of the punch bc it stops exile too and says target, but I think the others are worth having for now. Gonna test Sunforger and maybe cut the worst 2 copies you listed of the protection spells.

I use Give No Ground in my deck as it makes for aa very good blocking card if you cast it on Zada or just on Feather himself as you ythen can block as many creatures as you want with him. Invigorated Rampage is fantastic for attacking and Double Cleave as well.

my version is more Voltron based however, it has Sunforger and stuff like that. I am in the process of building a creature based one like this one. Iroas, God of Victory might be good, I think I'm gonna try and fit him in.

Added some targeted protection spells.

Not sure why, but you’re not running Sol Ring .

Also, I see how low your cmc is, but it doesn’t feel like you’re running enough lands. Even in my tightest aggro decks I haven’t dropped below 33.

Control_Train says... #12

Oh hey, it's the 30 Baneful Omens person! Thanks for stopping by. Sol Ring should probably be in here, but in my testing so far 30 has been just enough lands to not flood often or get mana screwed. The extremely low cmc density of the deck helps with that. My Yuriko deck is only running 29 (yikes) but if you're willing to mulligan a bit more aggressively, you can afford the slightly lower land count I've found.

Pretty cool list. Building a Feather deck myself rn. Fell the Mighty is a pretty good, repeatable boardwipe for this deck!

I dont really like Gut Shot in this deck, because even though it will bounce back to your hand if you target one of your own creatures, it does really do anything for you. I know you said you like because it was free, but it doesn't do anything.

Control_Train says... #16

Wiki-95 - currently trying to fit it in as we speak! Doing lots of blitz testing

Sillynx - thanks for the suggestion! Really like that one, may be hard to be one sided sometimes but gonna test it nonetheless.

MTOlesen - there’s tons of payoff for casting spells: Young Pyro, Monastery Mentor, Electrostatic Field, Firebrand Archer, Guttersnipe, Thermo-Alchemist, Pyre Hound, Runaway Steamkin, Heroic creature’s. It doesn’t DO anything, but it is a powerful free enabler.

And with the way Feather herself works I get to cast it four times in a turn cycle. It’s a bit life intensive but with the lifelink cards it shouldn’t be that much of an issue.

What about Phyrexian Arena instead of Chromatic Lantern. I'm not sure how much Lantern does in a two color deck and the Arena would let you sac the tokens you get from Young Pyromancer or Monastery Mentor in order to cast your spells on opponents turns (and then you get more tokens to do it again next turn). Maybe Arena isn't that great of an investment though without the token generators...

mn6334 says... #19

I mean Phyrexian Altar not Arena...

April 9, 2019 11:15 a.m.

Control_Train says... #20

That actually sounds like a really, really good suggestion. I could easily see myself cutting Lantern for that, or maybe something else. Not as reliable as Lantern but man is it more explosive. Thanks for the tip! Definitely getting tested.

I would suggest Ajani's Presence. +1/+1 and indestructible for W, with the (admittedly expensive) option to cover as many creatures as you have mana for.

I also agree with Phyrexian Altar being worth a look. I'll be attempting to try out my build today and see what works best. I'd probably cut Springleaf Drum instead of Commander Sphere, but that's my personal preference.

I also can't help but notice you don't have Sunforger on your list. It's likely not as good as it immediately sounds, because the deck is more about recurring cheap spells, instead of paying mana to find specific ones... But it still seems far too good to leave out. Not to mention the +4/+0 it gives when equipped is pretty excellent with so many pump/ keyword spells.

Sunforger is sold out everywhere I think and I won't buy it at hype prices but I am testing it to see if it is good. Feather doesn't care where the card was cast from, only that it would have gone to the graveyard. So you can permanently tutor for something with Sunforger, which I think makes it really nice. Ajani's Presence isn't quite the kind of protection I think the deck is looking for, but it's certainly worth testing and having. Altar got added along with a Teferi's Protection I forgot I had and a Council's Judgment because good cards are good.
