-The Lord Marshall

In our religion, you keep what you kill.

“Chronicles of Riddick”

This was my third commander build and always a joy to play. Its the very definition of graveyard play with a bag of tricks. There are several pathways to win with this deck that vary in speed and enough board control to keep you alive.

Meren of Clan Nel Toth, per the lore, came from a shamanistic tribe on the shard of Jund and later made her way to Grixis after discovering her necromancy powers. She would later return to her tribe and kill everyone. While the lore is a bit of a snore, the game play is amazing for reanimator shenanigans and controlling the board. The design for this deck is predominantly Persist and Undying ETB Effects with combo emphasis with option to one shot with Aetherflux Reservoir for a kill.

What would a grave deck be without the classic reanimator package and some choice cards to grab for cheap. Of course we need to fill the grave by either tutoring or discarding:

Buried Alive

Survival of the Fittest- This was once the slot for Fauna Shaman, but I replaced her as she is much slower.

Pulling these cards from the grave is just as easy:

Animate Dead

Dance of the Dead

Meren of Clan Nel Toth- She requires a bit more work due to the stipulation of requiring experience counters, but they add up quickly.

Sheoldred, Whispering One- One of the Phyrexian Praetors that pulls double duty of reanimating your creatures and forces your opponents to sacrifice a creature on each of their turns. She also has wonderful synergy with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth which makes her unblockable.

In order to gain your experience counters for Meren, the blood must flow and sacrifices must be made. This is especially important for “when a creature your control dies” trigger. There are a multitude of options to grant a sac outlet:

Carrion Feeder

Viscera Seer

Spore Frog- Self sacrificing creature that pulls duty at damage prevention

Sakura-Tribe Elder- Self Sacrificing creature that grabs you lands

Yahenni, Undying Partisan

Sidisi, Undead Vizier- Extort ETB requiring sacrifice to tutor

Razaketh, the Foulblooded

Ashnod's Altar

Birthing Pod

Diabolic Intent- One time tutor that requires sacrifice

Keeping a cleared battlefield is important to both protect your life total and to open the defensive line to your opponents life total.

Fleshbag Marauder

I love this guy as he takes out more than just other creatures, but also Planeswalkers and if they can’t do either he will go after their hand.

Sheoldred, Whispering One

Pulling that double duty as written about above

Grave Pact

Dictate of Erebos

By midgame no opponent should have a single creature on the field.

Undying and Persist have to be some of the best grave mechanics made in a long time for creatures. Dredge is ok, but the deck needs to be heavily stream lined to compensate for all the cards you didn’t want to hit the grave. This is the reason why Golgari Grave-Troll has never been added, but still considered. Dredge I personally think is much better mechanic suited for Muldrotha, the Gravetide

Combining these mechanics with a sac outlet and either card:Mikaeous, the Unhallowed or Melira, Sylvok Outcast on the field allows for some powerful outcomes. Mikaeous is definitely the star of the show for all these combinations when compared to Melira. He already allows the vast majority of your ETB effects take place twice with a sac outlet available, but there are a few creatures that can use and abuse this mechanic. Melira, however, is more one sided and only worries about the Persist Mechanic while protecting you from infect decks.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Undying:

Triskelion- Tri comes in with three +1/+1 counters and Mikaeous makes him a base 2/2. Ping your opponent for one damage with Tri by removing one counters. Remove the last two counters to target itself and kill it. Mikaeous will see that he had no +1/+1 counters and bring him back, but this time it’ll have one +1/+1 counter from Mikaeous and three +1/+1 counters from it’s own ETB. Repeat the process and make sure to always use the last two counters to kill itself. Adding a sac outlet allows you to use all the counters on Tri to ping the opposition for damage.

Spike Weaver- This requires you put in a bit of mana for each use, but the value is equivalent to having a second card:Spor Frog in the deck. I also love the fact that the “Spikes” can be used to nullify Persist for 2 mana by moving a counter from the Spike to the other creature.

Spike Feeder- You will lose life from your own plays with this deck. This Spike offers a life gain solution beyond Gray Merchant of Asphodel and allows you to drop much of your deck using Bolas's Citadel as you want. Remove counters to gain life, sac, bring back under Undying effect, wash, rinse, repeat for infinite life and a win condition with Aetherflux Reservoir.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed or Melira, Sylvok Outcast and Persist:

The +1/+1 counter from Mikaeous and the -1/-1 counter from Persist will nullify each other. Melira outright refuses to allow -1/-1 counters to ever be placed on the creature. Adding a sac outlet allows for as many ETB effects as your want.

Woodfall Primus-This is where the game becomes evil as you can target everything except creatures. This means no more lands, artifact, or enchantments for your opponents and your opponents will officially be crippled.

Puppeteer Clique- You’ve spent all game forcing your opponent to sacrifice their creatures and filling their graveyards. This is where you steal their toys and beat their brains in. You have the option to do this at any time. Need a blocker? Steal their creature, chump block it, and still the creature from the grave again to smack the opponent on your next turn since exile doesn’t take place till your next end step. This is also fast enough to snag those pesky Eldrazi when they hit the grave before reshuffling into the library.

These combinations work well with other cards that feed into the combinations, like:

Grim Haruspex- you can draw your deck out

Ashnod's Altar- as the sac outlet you can create infinite colorless mana that really makes me want to try using Torment of Hailfire for another Win Condition choice.

Viscera Seer- Scry to your hearts content

Carrion Feeder- One big creature to swing with on an open field

Lastly, let us not forget the newest win condition that has been popping up in a lot of decks:

Bolas's Citadel, Aetherflux Reservoir, and Sensei's Divining Top

This combination is beautiful in this deck as it will allow you to survive digging to your other combinations if your not able to touch an opponent. For instance, Woodfall Primus may be at the bottom of the deck and the only option left to get rid of that pesky Leyline of Sanctity, Grafdigger's Cage, Rest in Peace, or Ground Seal.
