Modern FNM Tournament 3-0 Winner —Feb. 22, 2019

Took the deck to my LGS for modern FNM tonight and honestly the deck felt great as I was able to finish the 3 rounds as the sole undefeated.

Round One vs. Infect 2-1 (Very Bad Matchup) Game one was unfortunate for opponent as he kept a one lander hoping to draw his second for Blighted Agent, he didn't and I was able to easily win. Game two went like most games against infect do, I lost turn three to a Glistener Elf. Game three I had a Slaughter Pact and Angel's Grace to answer the threat, compounded with Thoughtseize to take the first threat. I got pretty lucky here to win really, Infect remains a very hard and stressful matchup.

Round Two vs. B/G Rock 2-1 (Fair Matchup) Game one was a wash for me, he took my Lotus Bloom on turn one but from there I had multiples of both Ad Nauseam and my enablers. I was able to curve into Phyrexian Unlife on three, and win on four after he didn't present much of a threat. Game two my hand was mediocre and he curved Inquisition of Kozilek into Collective Brutality, I never really recovered and finished after not drawing a fifth mana source to cast Ad Nauseam, I saw all four Leylines off of two Sleight of Hand so that also happened. Game three oppoennt had Thoughtseize and Surgical Extraction in hand and not much else, I had the Leyline and was able to win turn 4 before he had an answer.

Round Three vs. Affinity 2-0 (40/60) This matchup really is a race, game one I simply won that race behind Phyrexian Unlife, game two was similar although I kept a hand that was light on acceleration but had Hurkyl's Recall, Darkness, Angel's Grace, and Phyrexian Unlife. I drew well and won on turn five after Darkness on turn four.

Overall a good night for me and the deck. Against three harder matchups the deck felt good and performed well. I look forward to playing more as always with the deck feeling so well positioned.

Additionally, I tried out Timely Reinforcements in the sideboard tonight out of sheer curiosity more than anything else. I'm not quite sure how to feel about it yet though, the effect is definitely powerful and may be worth exploring with burn being so popular right now, but I already have a great Burn matchup and its hard to say with a straight face that Timely is better than simply playing a wrath. My original idea was to play the timely with a Supreme Verdict however I forgot the latter and instead ran with the Timely Reinforcements, more testing is required before I make up my mind but I am leaning towards no right now, however it is a beautiful foil so I may just have to play it from time to time.

Is there a reason Godhead of Awe is in the maybeboard? :)

Until I finish the relevant section of the primer that is currently under construction I am storing all possible sideboard options (mainly the ones I could forget hence the Godhead) in the maybeboard for reference and your amusement ;).

More seriously, Godhead of Awe is a real option against midrange and aggro decks looking to get in a lot of damage via efficient creatures, jund specifically comes to mind. I don't play it but have and others still do so it's a mental note here so I don't forget to mention it.
