I am an experienced Commander player. I have played several variations of Grenzo, Dungeon Warden over the past few years, both in paper and on MTGO, and I am a big fan. Of the builds I own in paper, this one is my favorite.

The point of this deck is to deploy as many powerful haymakers as quickly as possible and overwhelm your opponents with giant creatures. Lots of commander decks play a handful of game ending threats that they can tap out for in the late game. This deck plays upwards of thirty and can deploy several at any turn of the game. As such, you can remain relevant at all points of the game, and quickly recover from boardwipes. Many of the cards are synergistic as well as being independently powerful, allowing the deck to snowball into a win after 1-2 turns.

The Golden Rule of Grenzo

Six is the magic number. If you remember nothing else about how to play this deck, remember that. There are no creatures in your deck with power greater than 6. Therefore, if you cast Grenzo for X = 4 (so he enters with four +1/+1 counters on top of his 2 power), activating his ability will have the ability to find every creature in the deck. It’s okay to cast him for X > 4, but make sure his power is at least 6.

The Dastardly Plot

Your priority at basically all points of the game should be to make as much mana as you can. Before casting Grenzo, your goal is to cast him. Afterward, you want to activate his ability as many times as you can so you can see as many creatures from the bottom as possible. This deck has lots of artifacts and creatures that tap for mana.

Grenzo will release a creature from the dungeon (on average) every other time you activate his ability, meaning you usually spend about 4 to get a creature. Most Grenzo decks play only creatures with power 2 or 3, with the idea being to cast him earlier. However, spending 4 to find exclusively weak creatures is not a particularly good investment. On the other hand, the average converted mana cost of creatures in this deck is 4.97, meaning that activating Grenzo's ability will often save you mana.
