Sideboard

This is a deck I made since Ixalan came out and it has evolved into what it is now after getting lucky and pulling 2 Carnage Tyrants and trading for 1. I started playing it after Guilds of Ravnica came out and the old sets rotated out. It has come a long way and I think it could probably be made a touch more consistent but I managed to win 1st place at showdown at my local store a couple times and even if I don't do that good now that there are very competitive decks around it still wins a lot of games 2-0.

For this deck, turn 2 and 3 are the most crucial. having either Drover, Otepec, or Thunderherd Migration down and a 3rd land going into either an Allosaurus or Ripjaw Raptor are huge plays. If the turn 2/3 creatures stick it's pretty much drop a massive threat every turn. Resist the urge to drop all dinosaurs in your hand main phase 1 if you have a Regisaur Alpha out and they have Settle The Wreckage mana up. I won against Jeskai Control a good amount of times simply by holding back till main 2 as they had no mana to counter after a Settle. Against non-control decks, be as aggressive as possible, and kick those Allosaurs when you can!

I've noticed it can get hosed by removal heavy decks so I've added a couple Atzocan Seers, also pumping via Rhythm Of The Wild to bring toughness out of burn range has proved to be very helpful. My main essentially had 3 Kinjalli's Sunwing which I've taken out for Rhythm in the main from the sideboard. Haven't tried this iteration yet but the Rhythms were very helpful last showdown. They may return but I'll see how it plays. I'll say it was good against Dire Fleet Poisoner and Arclight Phoenix, and pretty much anything with haste.

Two weeks ago I had two games against Bant walls and got really bad hands but there wasn't much I could do without an ideal hand, I went 2-0 against a gates deck that was pretty legit, Gates Ablaze allowed them to survive a few more turns on game 2. Yesterday had a bye then played my friend who is playing izzet dragons with some drakes as well. I went 2-0 in this matchup. Usually one of us gets land screwed but I think we had decent games. In one game he got out a Rekindling Phoenix and a Skarggan Helkite rioted to a 5/5 and was at 10 life, I had drover and allosaurus and 16 life. I dropped big huatli and shot them both so they couldn't block bringing him to 2, he shocks huatli on his turn. My turn I kicked another allosaur to kill the helkite (used drover mana) and swung again and he blocks with the phoenix. His turn I think he was in top deck mode and drew a land, I drew a land and played Gishath and that was game. He's gonna add black to it I think to add removal which will give access to thought erasure which WILL wreck me as I found in game 3 vs Esper Control. Went 0-2, did some damage, then after like 3 kaya's wraths, and him reanimating my Ghalta, and ulting Teferi, I was long dead. Game 2 Deathgorge was doin some work but it was short lived, chromium came down and hit me 3 times. As far as the Rhythms I think they're where they should be. If my 2 drop dies then turn 3 I'd play that if I have the option.

I traded for 2 settle the wreckage which I'm taking the Trapjaws out for and I'll try that out against a big/bigger creature matchup like the walls or elves. Also I'll edit this text to be organized if I ever get the time.

Two weeks back I went 2-1 and got 2nd. went 2-1 against the bant walls deck, our game two he won but it was SUPER close. I had 1 power less to kill him and I just played big huatli and -3'd her so his whole board couldn't block and he was down to 2 and I held back with 1 otepec, next turn the one guy got through with a double aegis of the angels and the dragon for 20 exactly, got him with a nice draw next game. Beat a drake/phoenix deck 2-1, he beat me game 1 hitting me with drakes pretty fast. game 2 and 3 were ideal hands for me and there was little chance after turn 3 Allosaur haste both games. Last match was vs my friend and of course I had the worst draws and couldn't really play. Got 2nd so pretty happy regardless.

This week I also got 2nd going 2-1. Game 1 was 2-0 against a mono blue mill deck, he actually milled quite a bit but some of my otepecs stuck and he couldn't blink carnage tyrant. Game 2 same deal. I sided in both atzocan seers. He would do the encase in ice enchantment on my otepec and regisaur so no haste from them and I had atzocan out and play a tyrant. Next turn play little huatli and minus 1 her to make tyrant a 12/11 and kill his blocker, end of his next turn I sac seer to get another tyrant in my yard. I think by this time I had a rhythm on the field again. Next game was vs the gate deck and I didn't have the best draws but that deck is a little slower so I got some dinosaurs and after a gates ablaze, got more dinos and won. Game 2 same exact thing almost, sub par hand and he got to 1 colossus with 2 life left. I had rythm out and 1 drover with a +1/+1 counter on it, I play a ripjaw and give haste and swing and won game 2. Went 2-0 there. Game 3 was vs a temur control deck which I went 0-2. I think if I had ideal hands both times with otepec into allosaurs turn 3, then I probably would've had a much better chance, but it was really bad hands for me and once that wilderness reclamation came down i was like here we go. Niv came down, then untaps and win. Game 2 same deal except he won with the mythic slime and was able to make a 3rd slime via reclamation the turn he played it. All I could do was kick an allosaur to kill the non token which was fine cuz after that I could only block 1, then he had 7 power and a shock coming through to my 9 life. Pretty crazy deck, I really like that enchantment. Got 2nd again so I was pretty happy about that anyway. Oh and for this showdown I swapped 1 thunderherd migration with an additional otepec. I may put the migration in the SB but I think I was OK without it. I think I need more games to see. Lil Huatli I was questioning for a while but it isn't the first time she's won games for me. Atzocan also was a pretty good counter as intended so that was nice.

Went to standard for the first time since War of the Spark coming out. 14 people came which is the most I've seen at the store at standard. Didn't change the deck but there are a few cards that I think could potentially replace lil Huatli who is now medium huatli if you don't count the 6 mana precon one, she is still "lil" with respect to the other Huatlis in the deck. My sister came and used my mono red dragon deck which admittedly isn't as good as the dino's overall it can beat them easily and in testing is undefeated against the dinos. There were 4 games total, went super late cuz we had to wait for people to get there.

game 1: won 2-0. played a dude I've played before who was playing gates but this time he played an izzet deck with Ral's and things. I got 2 pretty good draws. game 2 he managed to kill a drover here and there but I just had ripjaws and things continually swinging. I don't think he likes my deck but I like it, and idk if Sun Tsu said know thine enemy but I bring it every time so like, be prepared.

game 2: won 2-0. Played a dude I've never seen who was also playing an izzet deck. I got the ideal draw game 1 going into a hastey allasaurus turn 3, did that quite a few times actually and I was pretty satisfied with the deck this showdown. He had played wee dragonauts both games, game 2 when he was about dead at 7 life and I had gone carnage tyrant and alpha he was trying super hard to block and spell sling to pump dragonauts to kill tyrant but nothing he had pumped toughness so trample went through and he died anyway. I saw him play adeliz as well and the deck seemed neat and fair, if he burned my 2 drop ramp dudes he coulda beat me I think.

game 3: lost 0-2. Played a dude I've seen but not played. He was playing a grixis drakes deck that had some pteramanders in it. I knew it was not gonna be good when he was asap killing my 2 drops. I knew it was kinda lost but game one I woke him up a lil by casting big huatli and shooting 2 manders who were not adapted. I wouldn't have been able to do it if adapted the first one which he was able to do but not after he played the second one, so I killed them and he realized he couldn't. Game 2 I had 2 mana, a drover and some cards, get to 2 mana, play drover, it dies, get no lands for too long and it was totally one sided. I mean, unless if he didn't kill my 2 drops and I had sweet draws for 2 games I don't think I was winning that one. I think paradise druid could help in this removal heavy style. This guy won the whole thing.

game 4: won 2-1. Played a dude playing an esper midrangey deck. There was theif of sanity which took at least 5 or 6 cards from me. My game 1 was ideal hand except for having to call humans on unclaimed in order to cast otepec, but I can live with that if the allosaurus comes down on turn 3 with haste. Game 1 over quickly. Game 2 he got a lot of mortifies and desparks and my hand was not ideal and the removal was strong enough that he built a huge board and that together with a teferi, theif, hostage taker, and many of my own dinosaurs attacking me I was totally effed. Game 3 echoed game 1, called humans on unclaimed, turn 3 allosaurus, turn 4 allosaurus, turn 5 ripjaw, turn 6, raging regisaur which was clutch because he was staying alive via reanimating hero of precinct 1 with the new sorin, then playing another spell to make a guy and they had lifeling from sorin. But because of haste from otepec, ragining regisaur could shoot the blockers out of the way, and another turn was enough to end it.

got 3rd overall and my friend got 2nd, my sister got 10th which is ok for a wicked inexpensive deck I made like a month ago. I kinda wish they gave us all packs but they're only alloted a certain amount and there was way more than usual so she didn't get any. The dude working there I think wants to try and incentivize people coming which is partly why I go so I hope he figures something out.

in summary, dinosaurs still work!

Went to standard the past 2 weeks with the dinos. 2 weeks ago a bunch of people came again so it was 4 matches. Before my first match I figured I'd try something new and I took out the migration and 2 drovers for 3 paradise druids. I figured the hexproof would help guarantee the turn 3 4-drop. I would soon find out it was not worth it.

Game 1: lost 0-2. Played my friend, could not get a good hand. My friend was playing this super sweet deck that uses tezzy master of the bridge and saheeli to abuse karns and effectively one shot the opponent. Repeat games of me not doing much.

Game 2: lost 0-2. Played this dude who was playing mono blue tempo? except he said it wasn't and some cards were different. I guess I'd call it mono blue flyers that kill you too fast. Legit wayyy too fast for my deck in addition I had crap draws, I realized at this point my deck was rejecting the druids which I was calling Gweneth Paltrows, and leaving me with these very slow starts.

Game 3: won 2-1. Played this dude who said he made the deck right before but it was kinda decent against my deck while it wouldn't give me good draws. It was mono green counter proliferating. I didn't even know what yangu or his dog did because I didn't like the characters or art but damn that dog got big. His game 1 was fast and I played nothing for too long. Round 2 I won, hard to remember after two weeks but I think I got a ghalta out and that was pretty much it. Round 3 was kinda funny. We both were playing a bunch of guys and he had growth chamber guardians he kept adapting and proliferating a buncha guys. I had big huatli and 2 rhythms and since we both had a big board of a buncha fatties he wouldn't swing and I kept ticking up. I tactifully made sure I had 20 power on the board and enough loyalty on huatli to shoot all his guys so I could swing and win.

Game 4: won 2-1. Played a feather deck. kinda redic. Lost round 1, not a lot I could do against him getting back free spells every turn and got wrecked by little guys that got big. Round 2 I won, the big turning point was when he kept attacking with gideon and 2 other dudes, I had just found my second white mana to be able to play the settle the wreckage I sided in. He was visibly wrecked. I played a dude, played a ghalta, then won pretty much. round 3 I won even faster and got the ghalta out even faster.

Thought I did pretty bad but still got a pack and some credit. My sister got a pack too. It was aight.

This week I did a little better. Less people this time so only 3 matches.

Game 1: won 2-0. Played this dude who used to come all the time but hasn't been there in a long time. He always plays control and he's really good but I wanted the challenge. I got really good draws and was super aggressive. He used absorb quite a bit but I managed to keep drawing dinos and kept sending them his way. Also playing Rhythm really helped. And Drovers 3 power really helped to push the damage up once he couldn't deal with the threats. Game 2 he had dawn of hope which has historically wrecked me but he literally had 7 lands in his hand at the time he scooped. I played a couple more matches for fun after and I saw him playing the next guy and he locked him pretty hard with teferi and nexus of fate. Glad I didn't see that in my game.

Game 2: Lost 1-2. Played that mono blue deck again and got the otepec into hastey allosaur turn 3 on round 1, then turn 4 anouther allosaur and he scooped that one. Round 2 was almost the same but he held up counters and that one extra turn back was enough drawback to outpace me in damage. round 3 I just didn't have the ideal hand his dinky flyers were way too fast. I think raging regisaur could help in this matchup but I only have 1.

Game 3: Won 2-0. Played my sister who was super pissed. I helped her build a dimir deck whose intent was to mill yourself out and win with jace. It was my fault because I thought doom whisperer would combo with lich's mastery which it kinda does but you can't pay life you don't have which I didn't realize and someone called it out. She didn't want the showdown pack or anything just pissed. I found some dece midrange dimir decks that wouldn't take much to work with the power house of doom whisps but she didn't want to play it. We're making a Rakdos burn deck with pestilent spirit now and there is no combo to mess up here so it should work much smoother.

The deck is still legit, albeit this week I only played 2 decks that worked and only beat 1. The last week I did about the same at 50/50. I'll say drovers proved their worth over Gwen Paltrow pushing damage through. Lil huatli is still suspect but I feel like she fills a very niche backup plan which is why I like her there, she helps if the game goes on longer or if there is a stalemate getting tons of loyalty, getting an emblem, and buffing lil token dinos or whoever has trample. Also big shoutout to big Huatli, SERIOUS card in the deck, the power of the +2 is not to underestimated after taking a few hits. She gets too big to kill and you just sit back with a ripjaw or something and get to a massive life total while preparing a huge board and ping assault on any blockers. When she hits the ground, if she can be defended, she can get you the win in a short or long amount of time. Super versatile.

It's been a while since I gave an update to the decks performance. I also have only gone to standard 2 times in the past 4 weeks I believe. So the oldest showdown about 4 weeks ago now is pretty hard to remember and I placed high enough to get some store credit so I think I won 2 lost 2 if I remember correctly, I do remember some points about the first two matches.

Game 1: Won 2-0. Played a dude who had previously played a Feather deck, he was now playing a grixis deck. He unfortunately got land screwed game 1 so note much to write about there. Next match he got some tyrants scorns and a bolas out and I managed to get hit a couple times and stabilize with big huatli healing me. Also I'm pretty sure I played Regisaur Alpha 3 turns in a row and he ran out of answers.

Game 2: Lost 1-2. Played a gruul aggro deck like my deck minus the dinosaurs. I had the optimal hand game 1 and got him pretty good. Next game was very close and I was a little behind on board state but I had just got my second white source off a commune with dinos and I had a settle the wreckage in my hand from my sideboard, he had a full board and a new vivien which he had 1 card under. I was like using telekenesis to make him swing the team and he did it so I cast settle. Talk about make or break, he had the only answer he could possibly have in his colors that I could think of, he looks around and he's like OH! and flashes in a gruul spellbreaker from vivien. I died but it was a good game, really close. Next match I drew garb I think and lost hard to remember.

Game 3 and 4 I can't really remember, I think I played my friend who had a crazy tezzy of the bridge deck which was sweet, preeety sure I lost. Also I think I won against the dude who plays a jeskai control deck whos a lot of fun to play against. I got kinda good at recognizing his playstyle, that or I just cut his deck awful.

I didn't go the week after that but I went the next and I stunk. Played a lot of meta decks and it wasn't hella fun.

Game 1: Won 2-0: I played a really young kid who came with his friend. Game 1 he got mana screwed and I got an ideal turn 3 haste allosaurus hand and it was pretty much over. Game 2 I got almost the same hand, I was like dang yeah I'll take that. I think he used an addendum card that does 5 damage to kill the 1st allosaurus and I just played more, he played an aurelia and I played big huatli and shot it so it couldn't block. I felt a lil bad but I kept playing after and he got me once and he was pretty psyched.

Game 2: Lost 1-2: I never saw this dude before and he was playing a mono white weenie/ lifegain deck. Very annoying. Game 1 I won after he kept pumping his pridemate and I had a ghalta an allosaur and a tyrant. I was low so I only swung with ghalta once bringing him to 9 I think. He swung with the team and had mana open for making a vampire off the adanto land, and he had just played benalish marshal. I blocked with some mana dorks and took some damage because I knew that there wasn't enough life he could gain with ghalta, carnage, and allosaurus swinging to live with only 2 blockers. Next two games were not ideal hands so therefore it was just back to back getting pounded by a very annoying deck. Guy was getting a little cocky too, like dude, chill, we all know you're a genius for playing a mono deck of commons.

Game 3: Lost 0-2: Speaking of meta mono-colored decks, I played the mono-blue tempo/flyers guy for like the 3rd time. This time no optimal hand so yeah, unless I have an ideal hand and he has a sub-par one he's got it. Very annoying, at least he isn't cocky and we get it over with pretty quick.

Game 4: Draw: This guy was new to the store I think and was playing esper control. Meta decks were in the air that night, but I won't scoop! Not till its at least the turn before I die. I got him game 1 with rhythm and gishath, that was very satisfying to win with. Every turn I was dropping a threat and I think he couldn't catch up, he also had a kefnet that died blocking then next turn realized it wasn't in the yard, but he had activated narset, and he's like oh well I 'll just put it on top, and I was like wellll narset would put it on bottom, it didn't really matter cuz gishath got the win hitting alphas off the top. Next game he got me with like 2 teferis and a liliana, he kept playing removal spells and kaya's wraths and I was out of stuff and zombies killed me. Game 3 it was mostly the same but his deck is just super slow. It went to time and it's a 5 turn thing and he kept saying like nah we can finish this up, like he wanted the win so bad. So I played it out and I knew he wouldn't win before they were like HEY!

So after that I didn't go this week, and I'm gonna be on vaca next week so maybe I'll go after. Idk I guess I miss when people would bring like wall decks and elf decks and these teferi and mono decks are really boring to play against, the mono ones especially. I suppose I should adapt and change the deck but I like it and I've played it for a long time now. Plus I've been busy with a lot of other stuff so investing a ton in this one deck when I have a bunch of others I want to make or improve doesn't really make sense to me since its proven itself plenty of times. I saw the Marauding Raptor in 2020 and it doesn't replace otepec but it might best drover but it's hard to say. It kills my own otepec, and deathgorge, and drover is a more consistent 3 power than raptor is a 4 power. Also the necessity of having a 2nd green source land is greater without drover, making turn 3 plays with raptor as difficult as with otepec. I can imagine having 3 mana with a raptor and not being able to play a ripjaw or allosaurus due to not having that 2nd green mana, it happens sometimes if you hit that one clifftop retreat rather than like any other land. As of now I've played this deck by far more than any other deck I own so I know how to play it and I think it's pretty fun. If anyone read any of this the summary is, the deck IS fun, and at times resilient in the face of removal. The only change I may still make would be to add more Raging Regisaurs to the sideboard, probably taking the sunwings out. I loved those sunwings but it's hard to find a time to side them in and they have to come in first basically to be helpful as well as a greater threat of mine needs to be behind it. It's done some legit work for me but I think raging could be a little extra oomph that could give me a chance against dinky tokens and could potentially be allosaurus 5-8.

I tried doing an update a few weeks ago but after I hit save the website timed out and I didn't have the will to rewrite everything again so here goes nuthin. I did end up going to standard one more time July 15th I think so I'll see how well I can remember the matches to recap. Also this time I swapped lil Huatli to the sideboard and brought in the raging regisaur, also I finally swappeed out the 3 sunwings in the sideboard for 3 more raging regisaurs. I did like what the sunwings had done for me but the speed of the current decks I was facing didn't allow for any benefit from it on anything later than turn 3 and even then it was not half as good as my main gameplan of a turn 3 four-drop.

Game 1: lost 0-2 vs esper control. This match had me bummed for sure. Especially since game 1 I got him down to 2 life and couldn't close it out and his hero of precinct one kept making guys and he kept teferi bouncing or desparking my fatties till I had nothing. Game 2 he thought erasured me into oblivion and ulted teferi and I let him play it a little bit and gave it to him. We talked a bit after cuz I was like how do you even win? He said it's lame but he decks himself and keeps tucking teferi and we both agreed there was never enough time to complete that play if I didn't just give him the game. It was effective though, and annoying when all I wanna do is hit with dinos. I did kill a baby Teferi with a raging regisaur ping so I was happy to see that.

Game 2: Won 2-1 vs boros feather. Game 1 I lost and I was worried that the time of dinos was over. He got feather out and kept getting all his spells back and it was way too much value. Game 2 I put in 2 settle the wreckages and a wakening suns avatar. He legit only played like 2 cards, Krenko and sheltering light. He kept making goblins and swinging into my ripjaw and sheltering light it 3 times in a row. I think I got ghalta out and that was it. Game 3 he was progressing more ideally and had dreadhorde arcanist out and I think adanto vanguard, I knew feather was coming so I waited for him to swing with it since I had settle and mana up. He taps out, does a zillion buffs and in response I settle and that was essentially game. I think I just played four-drop after four-drop from then on.

Game 3: Won 2-0 vs izzet drakes/phoenix? Never saw this dude before and was doing that fast hand shuffling that was kinda annoying so I was really focused on toasting this dude. Got an ideal hand for a turn 3 four drop and I think he shocked my 2 drop, I had another otepec and returned to the gameplan and I got there after playing a few regisaurs and he tapped out to do a very light attack with a single crackling drake. Game 2 I think I put the settles and wakening suns in again but my play progression went a otepec that gets killed, then a rhythm, then 2 drovers with haste into a 3rd drover with a counter, then the next 2 turns were a regisaur alpha and I hit him for 17 since he again tapped out. I think he didn't realize that drover gets bigger with dinos. The next turn I play an allosaur with a counter off riot and swing with a bunch and that was game.

Pretty happy with that but then also a little sad that this standard began the "promo packs" which only the person who goes 3-0 gets. It's really lame and I haven't gone since. I feel like it was the perfect incentive for people to come and play with randos and get lil packs that might have some sweet stuff. When I started everyone got one, then after some new people started working there and more people came it was like top 5 or something, now it's maybe 1 person gets a pretty lame non-foil pack. It kinda incentivises meta builds which began showing up a lot like esper control and mono white and mono blue. That to me isn't that fun and I'm not gonna drop guap to maybe get top 4 for some store cred when I pay to play there anyway. I still play with my sis though and my friend, and I may go back after rotation but I got some summer to reclaim.

PS I did see marauding raptor and shifting ceratops and I like them both, I think the raptor is great but is semi dangerous to our game plan killing many dinos and otepec. The Ceratops is good but loses a point of toughness for some sweet abilites. Idk maybe I'll try them in another deck.

Thanks for reading this, I've played this deck more than any other and I think it's pretty fun!

It's been quite a while since I updated this deck now that it's not in standard. I still played it and kept it together and it's still a pretty good test for new decks I'm making plus I had a lot of good memories with it. I'm updating just because I got a carnage tyrant for dirt cheap a while ago and I figured I give him a new home where he was meant to be. I'm putting him in the side and taking out Etali. Etali was sort of like a cheaper Gishath effect but without the haste. His art did it for me, so awesome. He will find a new deck to live in for sure. The 4th Carnage is better against the control match-up and siding him in to increase my odds of getting him are ideal, I'd probably side him in for a gishath or ghalta. I found many times that Ghalta ends up uncastable if the opponent removes all your creatures or counters everything. They're starting to add a lot of dinosaurs now and I want to make a ton of decks on top of decks using ixalan dinos. Hope you enjoyed this deck.
