Banner Vaarek

this is a heavily tuned midrange deck that is designed to fight the current meta at my LGS. It strives to beat Junk , twin and the likes , and has done so for me with great efficiency.think of it as version of dead guy ale , that has heavily splashed for red. the landbase is fairly consistent , allthough im gonna add marshflats soon ( waiting for battle for zendikar).

starting with creatures , i want to go over my choices since they seem to evoke concern in most people.

1 cmc

Bloodsoaked Champion

agressive one drop with recursion.seems like it doesnt fit in here, since we are more midrange oriented. but the recursion is what makes this guy interesting. can be brought back at instant speed , cann be sacced to falkenrath aristocrat and is a human.and , not to say that he cant hurt our opponent if he remains unanswered.still not 100% convinced on this guy .

2 cmc

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben

probably the most controversial inclusion in this Deck.Thalia helps us slow down the game, on the go she prevents remands and counter shenanigans , delays a lot of our opponents actions , lets them keep cards in their hands for a longer period of time , and is a 2/1 first striker.so what does this mean for us?

we play 19 noncreature spells , most of them 1-2 cmc.if we have thalia out , that means we have at least 2 mana and can continue casting them.so not much of a disadvantage there. the advantage we gain from her is ridiculous.it delays of nullifies a lot of turn 2-3 , even if the is immediatly removed , that means our opponent wasted all his mana to remove her and ends his turn so she can actually be a pseudo timewalk for us.Another big advantage is she makes our discard effects better , since our opponents will be playing less spells.and lastly , she makes bolting goyfs possible. let them attack or block , and after first strike dmg bolt it.for it to survive there would have to be 5 different card types in the graveyard, and that is very unlikely and has not happened to me once during turns 3-5.she works quite well in the deck.

Dark Confidant

i dont think i need to say alot about this card. he is great.the fear of hitting yourself for 4 or even 5 damage is real , though most of our creatures in these slots have haste and the ability to even out immediately. also ,lightning helix and vault of the archangel help us fight the lifeloss , and lastly he is easily sacced to falkenrath aristocrat or if need be , liliana.

Falkenrath Aristocrat

this noble and handsome lady is our aggressive 4 drop. the ability to become indestructible is great , and she grows realy big since all of our 1 and 2 drops are humans. yes , she is removed with apth to exile , so as most anything.but most of the time she is a hard to interact with hasty flyer and that is great.also important , can block most anything profitably with a human sacrifice.

Restoration Angel

is just overall a great creature, helps protect our other stuff from removal , and lets thundermaw hellkite do his thing twice.also cann be flashed in during opponents end step to present a reasonable threat.

5 cmc

Thundermaw Hellkite

one of my all time favorite cards.in a format full of lingering souls this guy is the real deal.5 mana for a 5/5 hasty flyer with build in one sided boardwipe/tapdown ? yes please. he can be reactivated with restoration angel if need be , or saved from a path or removal. he is immune to bolt , decay and most other stuff , and will win you games.

Noncreature Spells

1 cmc

Lightning Bolt

not much to say here. versatily burn/removal. always great to have

Thoughtseize

its a staple , its great , play it , i dont need to tell you why its amazing

Inquisition of Kozilek

same thing here ,only more conditional and less painfull.

Path to Exile

its removal that can deal with almost anything, for one mana.

2cmc

Lightning Helix

helps offset the lifeloss from confidant , and is overall a great card in most matches.

3 cmc

Liliana of the Veil

this is probably the best planeswalker in modern , she is proven in grindy attrition based strategies , helps with our discard , deals with creatures , we want her in our deck.

Lingering Souls

is just amazing.synergises well with liliana , becomes ridiculous with vault of the archangel.

i will keep you guys up to date with matchup information , and will report any step this deck takes in the future , its a deck thats very dear to me since it includes most of my favorite cards and is tons of fun to play.thanks for reading , if you like the deck please show your appreciation with an upvote.

Updates Add

i´ve got my hands on a few Brimaz, King of Oreskos and am willing to give him 2 maindeck spaces just to see how that works out in the long run. the deck remained unchanged for a long time and with the changes in my local meta i think its time to switch it up a little. - 2 Bloodsoaked Champion - 1 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben + 2 Brimaz, King of Oreskos + 1 Lightning Helix brimaz will eventually be switched for Kolaghan's Command ( dont have the yet) as it also needs testing.i am pretty confident that one of both will stay ( presumably kolaghans command)

i´d love to get your thoughts and feedback on the changes
