WAR changes —May 1, 2019

Good day to everyone! After quite some time when no card seemed to be worth of inclusion in my beloved deck, WAR comes to our rescue with two absolute bombs.

IN:

OUT:

Having a new Green Sun's Zenith effect is a great thing, especially since it lets us get our finisher from the graveyard. Furthermore, this with X=10 makes Avenger of Zendikar a finisher on its own. The only reasonable choice for substitution fell on expertise, since as always it was the least powerful card among the ones that could be cut.

The new land is absurdly useful and powerful, especially since we have Crop Rotation. Being able to fetch it at instant speed is great, and thanks to it we have searchable creature removal in green! I took out Homeward path since it was a counter mainly to gilded drake and bribery effect but it was a too fringe situation to justify its inclusion over other non-green lands.

As I said in a recent comment, WAR has some green PWs that seem very powerful. I don't want to use them because they're actually useful only for their static abilities, and that makes them Enchantment with lifetotal. They cannot be tutored and the one that has the more useful effect, that is Nissa, Who Shakes the World, cost a whopping 5 mana, which is unacceptable for any kind of ramp effect in commander (considering also that you will have to endure a whole EDH turn to benefit from its static).

And that's it for now! I hope that future set will help Kamahl even more, up to now the deck's power is growing exponentially with each addition. May Krosa's might be with you.

On average, how much mana can you make in a game? I'm really interested in using Spawnsire of Ulamog in a deck to close games with an onslaught of eldrazi [I know, this unoptimal]. But I'm trying to figure out what changes I would need to hit the rediculous activation cost.

DecadeFire with Kamahl and an animated Gaea's Cradle using quirion ranger you will get a huge load of mana. If you feel like using it for spawnsire be my guest, even though the wisest choice would be to overrun everybody to death ;)

How about Nacatl War-Pride ?

TortillaConfetti I tried it but it cost a lot of Mana and the deck doesn't require a third wincon. Have you tried it yourself?

Cariddis why no selvala?

Titus78 in which way is selvala going to advance my game plan? Her ability to draw is definitely worse than beast whisperer's one. Furthermore, given that I have very few creatures with power greater than 4, she's basically a 2/3 who nets you 3 Mana at best. Selvala is a great card, but she's a "build-around" one. If I'm missing something in my reasoning feel free to point that out, but I doubt she deserves a spot in the 99s. Then again, if you prove me wrong I'll be more than happy since it will mean that my deck has suddenly got better :)

With the release of WAR, I feel like Finale of Devastation is an auto-include. Fetch a ‘hoof or reanimate from the graveyard, almost always team pump for the win.

I’m also looking at the new walkers Nissa, Who Shakes the World (for land indestructibility and sidegrade doubler to Extraplanar Lens for those who don’t like snow Lands), and maybe Vivien, Champion of the Wilds (flash is always good and the -2 is rather good I think).

Opinions/playtesting?

I'm already testing some WAR cards. Personally, I don't like to include any of the new planeswalkers. The reason is because they feel like "win more" cards and because Green does not have access to good tutors for PW. The two cards I'm really interested in are Blast Zone and the one you mentioned, that is Finale of Devastation . The latter is basically one of the best Green tutor they printed in a really long time. The former is a great removal effect that can be easily fetched in Green at instant speed and it is extremely versatile.
