1 SWAP AND PROTEAN HULK —May 7, 2017

OUT

IN

I think this change doesn't need an explanation. Even though it costs one more, Serpopard is definitely the better version of the Herald. It cost doesn't hinder the mana curve for Birthing Pod and the total CMC of the deck doesn't increase significantly.

About Protean Hulk... I tested it a lot during the whole week (I even tested it during an EDH multiplayer tournament) and I found out that in this deck it doesn't shine like it should. I don't have much sac outlet so it is hard to trigger it. Hulk is way more effective in combo decks containing cards like Fling.

And that's it for now, we'll see which cards Our of Devastation will have for my beloved deck!

A card was just spoiled for Amonkhet that might be worth looking into for this list. Prowling Serpopard is one mana more than Gaea's Herald, but has a pushed p/t AND it itself can't be countered (huge difference). The Herald may be an elf, but since she doesn't have an ETB ability she's not as synergistic with say Wirewood Symbiote.

Austin_Smith_of_Cards I saw it this morning and I'm already planning on ordering one :) I will definitely include it in the 99, taking Gaea's Herald out. She was in not for any synergies whatsoever, but for her ability instead. I see Serpopard as a straight upgrade; furthermore, since I have plenty of creatures with CMC 2, there shouldn't be any problem with my Birthing Pod curve.

Thank you for sharing your thought and caring for this deck :)

Whelp, it was just announced that Protean Hulk is unbanned in EDH. Now the only question that remains is what to swap it out for. I'm going to say Woodland Bellower, since it fulfills a similar role, but playtesting may be needed first.

Austin_Smith_of_Cards I was actually thinking about swapping Primordial Sage for it. There are the reasons why:

  • Using it instead of another CMC7 creature is out of the question, since both Avenger of Zendikar and Regal Force are insanely powerful.

  • Woodland Bellower is a great tutor that triggers as soon as it enters the battlefield, whereas Hulk needs to die; they may seem to be similar, but they're actually quite different one from the other.

  • I find that Primordial Sage is "the least of the best" among the CMC6 creatures that are currently in the 99. Since there is also Soul of the Harvest to keep the draw engine alive, I don't even feel guilty for taking it out.

Given all of that, I still need to playtest a lot to make a final decision. Luckily for me, two weeks from now I'll attend a EDH multiplayer tournament, which will be the ideal environment for testing both Protean Hulk and Prowling Serpopard :)
