Hi!

I thought of this thread I could make while reflecting on a few decks I've made in the past.

I've often considered ways that I could possibly cast Gleemax in a normal game without infinite combos. It seems fairly easy now with all the mana doublers and triplers in the game, but in this post I wanted to focus on damage, not mana, as there are so many unique ways to achieve absolutely ridiculous amounts of damage in MTG.

So what is the most amount of damage you've dealt in a game of MTG without using any form of infinite/indefinite combo?

My top is 2 to the power of (1.3 times 10 to the 95th power), done by using Sasaya's Essence combined with all my Forests on field (courtesy of Nissa, Who Shakes the World) plus a Yew Spirit. Unfortunately I could not ever find a way for a calculator to give me how much damage that is; rest assured it's over a googol. Well over.

That's a remarkably good point, no clue how I missed that... Still, replaced it with Yew Spirit for the same effect!

It's a good start. Removal in green is very hard to find so I like the small touches.

However, something about commander is you always want to have some sort of interaction with your general. It's certainly not necessary but with Multani, I think it's more fun. If you get some card draw in your deck, it would work really well with him.

Try Howling Mine, Font of Mythos, Collective Unconscious, Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury, Garruk, Primal Hunter, Glimpse of Nature, Heartwood Storyteller, Fecundity, Primordial Sage, Regal Force, Rites of Flourishing, Shamanic Revelation, Soul of the Harvest, Triumph of Ferocity or Zendikar Resurgent.

Another important thing in commander is a solid mana base. Running 38 Forests is not all bad but you want some more interaction with your deck. Oran-Rief, the Vastwood and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx would go really well in your deck. You might also want to consider a Sol Ring and Gilded Lotus because those are commander staples.

Now, what to cut.

Let's start with creatures. One thing you have to think about when casting any kind of spell in a commander game is, "Is this spell worth the mana cost?" and "Does this spell have any kind of interaction in my deck?".

In my opinion, these are the creatures you need to cut. To the right of each, I will put some substitutes:

Ancient Ooze

Ancient Silverback

Awakener Druid

Bloodbriar

Crocodile of the Crossing

Duskdale Wurm ... Pelakka Wurm

Emperor Crocodile

Nessian Asp

Pathbreaker Wurm ... Nylea, God of the Hunt or Brawn or Thunderfoot Baloth or even Primal Rage

Plated Crusher

Prized Unicorn

Pouncing Cheetah

Quilled Slagwurm

Ridgescale Tusker

Scaled Behemoth

Shoe Tree ... This is illegal in commander.

Skysnare Spider

Woodborn Behemoth

Yavimaya Ancients

Yew Spirit

A lot of the creatures you have just don't have much synergy in your deck. Cut them and try out the other recommendations I've given you thus far.

Other cards to cut with recommendations:

Call of the Herd ... Not really worth it unless you're running a token deck which you are not.

Prey Upon ... It's just not very good in commander. Try Ulvenwald Tracker

Might of Old Krosa ... Meh. Try Giant Growth

Shed Weakness ... Unnecessary. Again. Giant Growth

Genju of the Cedars

Gift of Paradise

Living Terrain

Sheltered Aerie

Trial of Strength

Zendikar's Roil

TL;DR I like your deck. It's a good first time commander deck. Try to cut some of the creatures out that don't have any synergy with it. Card draw would go well with your deck. Mono green always has ramp.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Welcome to the format.

Ivy Lane Denizen has pretty cool potential, I like to pair it with stuff like Sporemound, Hydra Broodmaster, Ooze Flux, and Yew Spirit

Haha yeah you're right about Bower Passage, it means flyers can't get in your forest and have to go over it lol, literally the opposite of my reasoning for it! Still, should you find yourself against lots of flying decks... Or, just pop it in the bin lol.

Traverse the Ulvenwald doesn't ramp, it's just there for draw. As you say though, you only really want it if you did go down the delirium route.

You have a couple of fair sized guys, if you do run a couple more then Fungal Sprouting becomes a fun two of, instant forest. It's annoying that saprolings aren't plants, because I'd love to run it alongside Avenger of Zendikar, but the avenger cares not for saprolings.

If you're looking to add, then the cards I'm immediately not excited by are; Traproot Kami, Yew Spirit, Vinelasher Kudzu, and Unchecked Growth. I know you like your spirits there, so if you aren'y keen on that you could always cut the defender element of the deck. It would allow you to play a more varied game, and would make a nice amount of space as well.

Oh,do do that! I, for one, find an immense satisfaction in running voltron-esque decks, with one hyper-pumped guy that moreor less can't be stopped. My deck: What madness drove them in there?... has a, kinda, similar feel to it. I slap Unchecked Growth on Yew Spirit and then all my, seemingly, superfluous manaramp makes him real scary
