In edh your cmdr has a "color identity" these colors are found in its casting cost and its text box. So for instance Yasova Dragonclaw is to cast but has both in its text box so its color identity is .

You can not use cards with other colors on them outside of the cmdrs color identity including hybrid mana such as Shield of the Oversoul .

You are aloud to use cards that say the color outside of your identity like fetch lands and things like Desecrated Tomb but don't show the color. Bye show I mean the mana symbol or or

You can not run cards that are colorless but say on them that they are all colors like Transguild Courier . Cards like this are only aloud in 5 color decks.

Cards like Witness the End that have devoid to make them have no color are not aloud in a deck with a cmdr that does not contain in it's identity

sylvannos The +1 is a 7 mana Witness the End (minus damage) that leaves a pretty big planeswalker on the battlefield. Cute, but you're opponent is often at 0 cards or 1 card (decent chance of a bluff) in hand by turn 7, or they'll counter Bolas. Negate is massively played now. Of course, there's also a significant chance he'll stick with a good opportunity for that plus. Basically, it's hit or miss.

Tbf you're right about Garruk and Ugin, but they also had very potent and consistent abilities when they hit the battlefield. Garruk was a bit of a Swiss army knife with good abilities and, failing removal, always gave you solid creatures as a plus. Ugin could practically All Is Dust the instant he comes down, then follow up with bolts and a game-winning ultimate.

Bolas trades off being 'consistent' for starting with tonnes of loyalty and having potentially very strong abilities (except for the ultimate, which is usually just win-more). But, you know, he doesn't hold a candle to Ugin or Cruel Ultimatum, and I might even prefer Garruk myself. The inconsistency of his abilities is really irritating- the +2 could just hit a Dark Salvation or something, the +1 hit a single land, or the -4 be used on a Glory-bound Initiate.

Murphy77 I don't understand why that's good. Startled Awake  Flip isn't a permanent unless it's a Persistent Nightmare  Flip, and if it's that then I may as well just attack with it. Perpetual Timepiece is probably fine as a one-of, but I'm milling my opponent a lot more than myself, so the first ability isn't super useful.

Taking out the Implement of Malice and Vessel of Malignity seems fine, but I don't think Winds of Rebuke is a good enough replacement. Cruel Reality and Witness the End for Anticipates seems pretty good. Why would I want Cancel over Censor though? It's good for budget, but I think having playable counterspells is worth an extra $3.12. For the last swap you recommend, I would take out one of the Unburdens, but as a member of the Mind Rot fan club, I don't think it's allowed.

Natpapetti Interesting, but I would be compelled to go Sultai (see above reasons), and the three-color support in the current Standard is a little expensive.

If you play Winds of Rebuke on Startled Awake  Flip, then you get to re-play Startled Awake  Flip. Add in a few Perpetual Timepiece and you can recycle from your grave to your library. I would try the following:

-1 Implement of Malice, -1 Vessel of Malignity, +2 Winds of Rebuke

-1 Cruel Reality, -1 Witness the End, +2 Anticipate

-3 Censor, +3 Cancel - - -2 Unburden, +2 Perpetual Timepiece

Forerunner of Slaughter is better than sludge crawler in every way, Kozilek's Sentinel is good for aggro, Outnumber and Ruinous Path are good removal for the deck, Eldrazi Mimic is fantastic for the deck, as is Matter Reshaper. Barrage Tyrant is a good non-combat wincon. Thought-Knot Seer is a good potential sideboard Bearer of Silence is very good for aggro/control. Sky Scourer is a flying kozilek's sentinel. Kozilek's Return is a must have in your colors in standard. Ways to proc its flashback as well as good game enders are Bane of Bala Ged and an Endless One for at least 7. As far as lands, your wastes are, well, wastes. Mirrorpool is unnecessary, you can run Sanctum of Ugin and possibly Shrine of the Forsaken Gods, maybe even Sea Gate Wreckage instead. Reality Hemorrhage is fine to proc colorless spells and all, but when Shock is legal, just run shock. Eldrazi Obligator is a Turn Against on a body, but I wouldn't recommend running either. Both Witness the End and Dutiful Return are bad. You don't need them. Phyrexia is right, Panharmonicon is useless, there's no need to run it. I'm sure there is more that you can edit but that's all I see at the moment.

Shock would be a good fit. Also, if you're doing control in black, Transgress the Mind, Mind Rot, Witness the End, and or Thought-Knot Seer are good cards for that strategy.

Good luck!

I think some hand control is needed. I play tested this a bit (went to turn 15 or so twice) and you have good removal, but no way to really keep your opponent from keeping up with you. I think Transgress the Mind, Mind Rot, and/or Witness the End for starters.

For your sideboard I suggest Make Obsolete or similar to deal with aggro decks and servo/thopter generators. For more tactical removal on the cheap, Dead Weight (maybe 2x (?) in addition to Fatal Push) is great to slide into a deck for early, cheap removal, and for slowing creatures mid-to-late game.

I have a mono-black deck that might give you some ideas (not tribal, but has good cards, I think) Mono-black weenie speed deck (budget)

Cool deck! Good luck! +1 from me!

Witness the End is really cool, how have I missed out on this for so long? I'll find a way to implement it sometime soon when I'm not fiddling around with (AER). Thanks so much!
