Szarel, Genesis Shepherd
Legendary Creature — Insect Druid
Flying
You may play lands from your graveyard.
Whenever you sacrifice another nontoken permanent during your turn, put a number of +1/+1 counters equal to this creature's power on up to one other target creature.

Jenova's Genetic Modifications
No prob! I started brewing Jenova earlier this year, but eventually turned those brewing efforts into Szarel, Genesis Shepherd. There's def some decent overlap between the two; I even considered Jenova for Szarel's 99. Again, if you don't mind going a bit off theme with your creature base, there are a few more cards that could work well here:
-
Gyre Sage - A bit of redundancy with Incubation Druid.
-
Managorger Hydra - Doesn't take much for it to get big.
-
Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh as another potential draw source, especially given the wording for her second ability. Looks like ~16 of your creatures, including Jenova, are Legendary, so ymmv based on that volume.
+1/+1 counters have an overwhelming abundance of support, there's def a lot more that could be worth considering.

Gitrog | Same Frog, Different Ride [Primer]

Hey Crow_Umbra! You remembered well. I’ve always liked Jenova mechanically and I honestly don’t mind sitting across from SpongeBob, Spideys, or Space Marines at the table.
That said, I’m still a bit daunted by the idea of running UB myself. But with the way next year’s sets are shaping up, I think UB is inevitable.
I’ll definitely check out your Szarel, Genesis Shepherd — how’s it been playing for you? I’ve heard a lot of great things about the new Jund precon, but like much of Edge of Eternities, I haven’t really had the chance to appreciate the set yet. Spidermen, Avatars, and Lorwyn kind of stole the spotlight around its release.

Gitrog | Same Frog, Different Ride [Primer]

Ravenous Ride Gitrog is a cool commander and seems so explosive. Definitely a commander on my short list of options to eventually brew. It's also something I've considered for the 99 of my Szarel, Genesis Shepherd deck.
I don't remember if you've stated at some other point if you're not really into Universes Beyond cards, but Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh and Jenova, Ancient Calamity could be worth a look. If not, totally understandable, I know UB isn't everyone's cup of tea.

The Worldseed: Exogenesis [Grave Land Primer]

Venum Thanks for taking a look! I liked Szarel, Genesis Shepherd when it was spoiled, but I really wanted another Lands deck, and this one was a ton of fun to build.
I thought about Juri, Master of the Revue, but I like the feeling of repeatedly cycling through my lands, and she feels more like a one-time bomb if she gets built up correctly.
Mayhem Devil is on my short-list if/when I make further changes.
I'm already running Braids, Arisen Nightmare, and that kinda fills a similar niche to Braids, Cabal Minion. Plus, I like the potential card draw from Braids, Arisen Nightmare. I'm finding that I run through cards in my hand real quick with this deck, since I can usually dump all my lands onto the field by turn 3.
I've been slowly building a Goad deck, and Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer
is already one of the big pieces in that one. I don't think it would have a ton of synergy in this deck, but I'll definitely consider this.

The Worldseed: Exogenesis [Grave Land Primer]

Love the deck!
I bought the pre-con and re-built it around Szarel, Genesis Shepherd because i had now experience with a landsac deck.
Obviously, Hearthhull, the Worldseed is a much better and faster option.
Here's some suggestion outside the box :
Juri, Master of the Revue since you're sacrificing a LOT, this creatures becomes HUGE fast, give you a great blocker and if someone wants to destroy it, they eat a lot of damage too.
Mayhem Devil is already in your maybeboard, I love it. since we're going for non-combat damage.
Braids, Cabal Minion is also great, slows down everyone while giving you a sac outlet for free.
Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer
While goading is great for your own protection, the fact that it creates treasure token to keep your mana up while sacrificing all your lands is great.
Crow_Umbra on non-black commander search advice
2 months ago
Okay, maybe a couple more suggestions from my rotation, since you are still somewhat open to a bit of Black. The following options have Black in their color identity, but it is more so the secondary or even tertiary support color:
-
Goro-Goro and Satoru - They're a blast to play and have a couple of different build paths, depending on your budget and whatnot. Their most popular build option utilizes Ninjutsu and smaller evasive/unblockable threats as Ninjutsu enablers. I went more all in on Haste, Dash, and Dragon support, so the deck is almost Mono Red with Blue and Black playing support. They're a bit over a dollar, and they're currently sitting at 205 on EDHRec.
-
Szarel, Genesis Shepherd - The newest addition to my line up and another pre-con commander option. Out of the box, the World Shaper pre-con is probably one of the strongest and well built options out there, and doesn't need a whole lot of upgrading. Most people play Hearthhull, the Worldseed as their commander, since it was the "face" option for the deck (and is fairly strong). Given Szarel's wording, you can lean into Lands Matter, +1/+1 Counter, or Aristocrats/Sacrifice to various sliding scales, or even go for an Insect typal build. From playing him, he feels more like a +1/+1 counter commander that uses the other strats as additional value. Either way, both commander options lean much more heavily Green with Red and Black used for additional support. Szarel is currently sitting at 634 on EDHRec, and Hearthhull is at 184.

I'll Blow Up Your Lands Before Ever Seeking Help

Your primer description is hilarious. Have you revisited this list much since the World Shaper precon dropped recently? Your strat of "primary sac lands for Korvold value" is more or less the focus of that deck, except with either Hearthhull, the Worldseed or Szarel, Genesis Shepherd as the commander. In fact, Korvold was reprinted in the 99 for that deck list. I personally opted for Szarel as the commander, but I'm sure Korvold could slot into the Command Zone without skipping much of a beat.

Hey there KayneMarco, I hope you're having a chill weekend. I was wondering if you could check out my Szarel, Genesis Shepherd deck & offer me some feedback? Lands Matter is a strategy I'm still fairly new to, & it seems to be your specialty.
I'm trying to balance out Lands Matter with +1/+1 Counter support to make full use of Szarel's abilities.
