Summoner's Bane

Instant

Counter target creature spell. Put a 2/2 blue Illusion creature token onto the battlefield.

Neotrup on do tokens have names

Yes and no. All tokens have names. If a spell, like Llanowar Mentor tells you the name, it will have the assigned name. If it does not, it's name will be it's subtypes:

111.4 A spell or ability that creates a token sets both its name and its subtype(s). If the spell or ability doesn't specify the name of the token, its name is the same as its subtype(s). A "Goblin Scout creature token," for example, is named "Goblin Scout" and has the creature subtypes Goblin and Scout. Once a token is on the battlefield, changing its name doesn’t change its subtype, and vice versa.

However, when you're directed to choose a card name, you are limited to cards that actually exist. This means you cannot choose Elf, as that is Elf is not a card:

201.3. If an effect instructs a player to choose a card name, the player must choose the name of a card in the Oracle card reference. (See rule 108.1.) A player may not choose the name of a token unless it's also the name of a card.

Interestingly, you are allowed to choose Illusion and then have a token generated by Summoner's Bane tap for mana, because the token does happen to share a name with half of a split card.

Very cool. I was thinking Kira, Great Glass-Spinner in addition to Lord of the Unreal, deff not 4 copies, but 2?

Yes, "obscure" tribal (e.g. non-elf, merfolk, goblins, zombies, soldiers, etc..) with a budget restriction element force you to be creative; cant buy the best cards. My friends did it with buying all new cards (excl. basic lands) with budgets of $10, $20, and $30! Really cool seeing what decent playable cards you can fit in.

I'm with yah on Summoner's Bane being too high on mana to fit; wanted to suggest given theme.

Standstill is hit or miss and forces them to make a decision. Best is when your opponent casts a removal spell which triggers it and you draw into a counter.

I'll pop back if I have any other ideas. Looking forward to seeing how the final copy pans out

Agrothorn Thank you for the feed back.

Background:

There is no budget besides mine I need to keep :P for now. My friends and I have all built tribal decks and I thought I would use tappedout to test this one before purchasing it. We all have fun with them and most aren't 100% competitive. I would say I would like to see a format around tribal. Making decks with at least a third of your deck as one creature type is difficult to get just right. Other tribal decks in our group go from centaurs, eldrzi (from the og zendikar and new stuff), humans, werewolves, vampires, zombie and it goes on.

Edits:

I think Standstill would be a great addition. I'll be putting it in the maybe board and figuring out how to fit it in. So Kira, Great Glass-Spinner does fit but I don't think I could trade out the 4 Lord of the Unreal for any them. I'll also put it in the maybe board to see if it could work. The problem with her is she doesn't give a much needed buff to hold up to other tribal decks. Cryptic Command would be great but just to pricey for my budget. Summoner's Bane is a little to slow at a 4 drop. Confound most likely has a place and I'll do some testing with that. I choose Rescind because it is board control if we couldn't counter something or a cycle to draw if we don't need board control.

very cool! I like how you not only used Illusions, but you used ones that you have to sac if targeted.

My friends and I had a similar deck challenge. Is there a $$ budget limit too?

Kira, Great Glass-Spinner is a good fit, but a little pricey.

For counterspells, if you don't want to run the original because you want a cantrip, maybe Confound or Cryptic Command? Summoner's Bane is a good fit for this theme too, but no card draw.

How about Standstill? You should have early board pressure. This on turn 4 would work out nice with 3 dudes on the board.

Also why Rescind?

Looking forward how this turns out!

Stardragon on Jace, Jace or Jace?

Demarge, ScionsStillLive, MoonHollow124, Pervavita and shadow63. Thxs for helping

  1. Ik that Mind Sculptor is the most powerful and thats why i was considering it but I DON'T actually need for anything it's just uber powerful

  2. My theme is Illusion tribal with ways of making them hexproof like Lord of the Unreal or Mask of Avacyn

  3. My Sig Spell is Summoner's Bane though I may just do Brainstorm or Counterspell

  4. While I'm aware that Cunning Castaway is on theme but being on theme doesn't always make it good thats why I was asking between Beleren or Castaway.

I like the setup here! Maybe Summoner's Bane to deny an opponent a creature while giving you more steak burning power?

EDIT - added links

Some Maybeboard cards I think should be in the main deck: Benthicore , Inspired Sphinx , Kederekt Leviathan , Pentavus , Intruder Alarm , and Soothsaying . Myr Turbine and Heartstone are kind of meh, I'd replace with Genesis Chamber and Unstable Obelisk . I'd also swap some counterspells - Geist Snatch , Summoner's Bane and Lazotep Plating in for Cancel , Dissipate and Rewind .

Cards I'd cut: Sage of Epityr , Talrand, Sky Summoner , Bane of Bala Ged , Polymorphous Rush .

Cards I'm not really impressed by: Stormsurge Kraken , Tidespout Tyrant , Windreader Sphinx (depends how much flying you end up with), Sphinx Ambassador , Darksteel Colossus , Pathrazer of Ulamog , It That Betrays . I think it's better to focus on big guys that also have ETB effects than use these.

Some other cards to consider (plus the ones I sent you): Erratic Mutation , Synthetic Destiny , Evacuation , Aether Gale , AEtherize , Crystal Ball , Interpret the Signs , Precognitive Perception , Seer's Lantern , Ugin's Insight , Treasure Map  Flip, Zhalfirin Void .

Thanks for the suggestion!

I had been testing the deck out recently, and it definitely needs to have a better balance of threats vs enablers. Summoner's Bane being both disruption and enabler is definitely a plus!
