Hey, on a low budget Sheltering Ancient and Hunted Horror when scavenged give a lot of counters for two mana.

These creatures are also lower mana cost with trample that can be to cast for Varolz, the Scar-Striped to put counters on them or to sac to get them into your graveyard. They have trample and even though Horror creates pro black token creatures for opponent to be blockers black creatures with trample will trample over them and hit your opponent. That's how trample works with color protection, opponent creatures can only block as much damage as it has toughness then the rest is done to opponent. You just need to be able to kill your opponent with trample damage before they kill you with 3/3 pro black creatures.

Grim Flayer and Grisly Salvage are good cards for this strategy, effects to get cards into your graveyard. These effects can help to find Varolz while also getting creatures you want to scavenge into your graveyard. Flayer is another creature who has trample to put counters on and Double Masters (2X2) version is much less than $1 each.

4x Varolz is really the only scavenge creature you need. You want to draw him and can scavenge other copies of him. All the other creatures with scavenge cost too much mana to scavenge and Slitherhead is very lackluster. Instead of playing other creatures with scavenge ability play creatures who have high power for the mana cost? Rely more on Varolz to scavenge?

On a low budget this is the core I would start with:

You’ve actually done a really good job for your first decklist, so big props there.

The only things i’d suggest is ditching Sheltering Ancient (your main advantage is big creatures and this card is actively arming your opponent), Topiary Stomper (i don’t see a game ever going long enough to have 7 lands in play) and Wayward Swordtooth (feels a bit clumsy, though not terrible). In their place i’d suggest using the full playset of Ripjaw Raptor and Drover of the Mighty, and then getting some interaction to mess with your opponent (letting your opponent do what they want is never a good idea). Both Lightning Bolt and Primal Might seem really good here.

But overall, what you have here looks really solid, especially for a first-brew. Keep it up!

Hi Nova! Thanks for the comment!

Yes, we all had a budget restriction of $45. You can see the budget version of the deck here. The deck plays really well. In my experience the fogs are imperative for this deck, especially when you get into the 1v1. With Kros you spend all game buffing your opponents creatures and when it gets down to just two players you need to be able to buy time to proliferate the infect counters with something like Contagion Clasp.

As for Paradox Haze I have a very nice hand painted alter of the card, I haven't had a home for it in a while since I took apart another deck so I just have to put it in here. Here's a link to the alternate art if you wanna check it out. There are a lot of cards in the build though that trigger on upkeep Orzhov Advokist, Aven Mimeomancer, Evolutionary Escalation, Sheltering Ancient, Sporogenesis, Crescendo of War, Kumena's Awakening, Phyrexian Swarmlord, and of course the commander Kros, Defense Contractor so I think it will be really strong.

I'm excited to see how Kros can be improved with upcoming sets and more community research.

Cool idea! You might like these: Mogg Maniac, Spiteful Sliver, Stuffy Doll, Coalhauler Swine, Arcbond, Pariah's Shield, Wall of Souls, Druid's Call, Sheltering Ancient (make opp's dude big, then fight it with taunter!), Evolutionary Escalation, Spiteful Shadows, Binding Agony, Gratuitous Violence, Dictate of the Twin Gods, Trove of Temptation, Lure.

It's too bad you don't have white. There are a lot of white cards that are similar to or work nicely with Brash Taunter. These are just a few: Guilty Conscience, Entangler, Pariah, Boros Reckoner

Both the cumulative upkeep of Sheltering Ancient and the ability of Erhnam Djinn trigger at the beginning of your upkeep. You control both triggers, so you can choose in which order to put them on the stack.

However, targets must be chosen for the Djinn's ability when you put it on the stack, while you do not choose which creature you'll be giving counters to until the Ancient's ability resolves. Willbreaker will trigger when you target your opponent's creature with the Djinn ability, and that trigger will go on the stack at the top and resolve first. You will gain control of the creature, and then when you resolve the Ancient's ability, you won't be able to put counters on that creature anymore because it's no longer your opponent's creature.

These cards do not interact with one another. Sheltering Ancient's Cumulative Upkeep ability does not target, thus does not trigger Willbreaker.

If I have a Sheltering Ancient in play, along withh Willbreaker, assuming I have 3 age counters on the ancient, can I place all 3 +1 counters on same creature? Or does 1st counter trigger Willbreaker's ability, thereby making it MY creature now and not opponent's? Or are all 3 plsced simultaneously?
