Hey, you haven't really made a complete deck yet to begin optimizing? Since there's only 14 lands here and you have to know that's not enough lands for a Commander deck?

There's some good ideas here, such as stealing opponent's creatures, attacking with them and then sacing them, but you want more sac outlets for this strategy. Making opponents discard cards is good, but giving an opponent the choice of what card to discard can be problematic for Tariel since opponent is not going to discard a creature. There's some reanimation and lots of recursion here which is good in these colors, but there's few enablers to get your creatures into your graveyard.

Some causal budget deck building advice to get started.

To start add 36 lands, they can be all basic lands to begin, can change some to dual lands later. Have 36 lands so you fill all the spots that are needed for lands and to clearly see how many cards have to be cut for lands. The double faced cards represented as lands here are all terrible cards for the mana cost. Cut them all and replace them with basic lands?

To add more lands next cut all the Pacifism removal? This type of creature removal doesn't interact with Tariel, Reckoner of Souls because it doesn't kill opponent's creature putting it into opponent's graveyard. If you want to utilize Tariel's ability then your opponent's creatures have to be put into graveyards, not exiled or stuck on the battlefield unable to attack or block.

The next cards to cut to add more lands are the high mana cost creatures who don't do enough for Tariel, Reckoner of Souls. Tariel is the high mana cost spell you want to cast more than the rest, the other spells played should have some interaction with him or interact with opponent's creature in some way such as In Garruk's Wake. Keep Wake, cut the rest?

Cards to cut last are some that just aren't doing enough for the mana cost and don't have any interaction with Tariel, Reckoner of Souls or the other strategies being played.

All these cuts make enough spots for 36 lands. When you have enough lands then you can begin to optimize the rest of your deck. Good luck.

I am trending away from global enchantments in favor of repeated life gain or creature generation in this batch of edits. I made sweeping edits in several categories:

  • Lands

Swapped out 8 Plains for Cryptic Caves, Desert of the True, Encroaching Wastes, Idyllic Grange, Karn's Bastion, Labyrinth of Skophos, Radiant Fountain and Secluded Steppe.

  • Defensive Auras

Upgraded Pious Interdiction to Recumbent Bliss (which would potentially provide many instances of life gain instead of 1) and dropped Bonds of Faith in favor of Gossamer Chains.

  • Offensive Auras

Upgraded Chosen by Heliod to Soaring Hope, Hope Against Hope to Spirit Mantle, Indomitable Will to Gift of Immortality and Ordeal of Heliod to Sunbond.

  • Sorceries

Upgraded from Blessed Reversal to Aetherflux Reservoir, Plea for Guidance to Silent Sentinel and added Pegasus Stampede for more ETB creature triggers.

  • Vanilla Creatures

Swapped out generic flyers (Armored Pegasus, Concordia Pegasus, Loyal Pegasus, Mistral Charger, Stormfront Pegasus, Wingsteed Rider) for ones with more ability or utility (Pegasus Charger, Plated Pegasus, Eiganjo Free-Riders).

  • Relevance

Bigger is not necessarily better so I opted to swap out Serra Avatar for Danitha Capashen, Paragon.

  • Defense and Removal

I swapped out Elspeth Conquers Death and Ghostly Prison in favor of Sacred Mesa and Monastery Mentor and Giant Killer for Frontline Medic.

  • Boost

I also replaced 3 boost effects (Commander's Insignia, Dictate of Heliod, Honor of the Pure) with 3 alternate win conditions (Test of Endurance, Felidar Sovereign, Archon of Redemption).

  • Life Gain

Replaced 3 less efficient or reliable life gain sources (Soldier of the Pantheon, Righteous Cause, Honden of Cleansing Fire) with better ones (Soul's Attendant, Auriok Champion, Pious Evangel / Wayward Disciple, Linden, the Steadfast Queen, Answered Prayers).

Hyperalgialysis on $2 Angels (Angelic Accord)

Sacred Cat might work better than Doomed Traveler since they both make a token but the cat has lifelink. Cathedral Sanctifier does the same job as Angel of Mercy but costs 4 mana less. With all these tokens Anointer Priest would help keep you gaining life. If you can make these adjustments, you could probably lower your land count. There are a few cheap enchantments that basically do what Pacifism does but also gain you some life, Faith's Fetters and Pious Interdiction. Toss them in too, you need some removal. One last cheap card to consider would be Resupply.

Blossoming Defense is great (so is Heroic Intervention!). I personally like Fragmentize better than Demystify just for it's flexibility, but both are pretty good. Pious Interdiction doesn't remove the biggest threats of the gods: their abilities. I would use Sorcerous Spyglass, Cast Out, or Ixalan's Binding instead. FYI, upgrading most that stuff to what you want would only cost maybe $40 or so.

Yeah thanks, I would love a few better Tranquil Expanses and anointed procession and stuff, it's just that I don't have a huge budget, and this is mostly the stuff that I've been able to find at the gaming store I go to when I'm there anyway, so it's not great. That's why it's not as great as I designed it. The reason for ambuscade, is because this variation of cats utilizes +1/+1 counters, and it actually works really well as a combat trick on either offensive or defensive if you have even like a 3/3 or a 4/4. I'm doing a Standard Showdown tonight, so I'm gonna try to replace my Stalking Tiger, Feral Prowlers and Wily Bandars for some better creatures. I'm also going to replace the energy aspect of the sideboard with some stuff that I've found I need for certain matches against certain meta decks. I need enchantment removal (Demystify/Fragmentize), God Removal (Pious Interdiction), and stuff that makes my creatures hexproof (Blossoming Defense). Thanks for your feedback.
