Paladin en-Vec

Creature — Human Knight

First strike, protection from black, protection from red (This creature deals combat damage before creatures without first strike. It can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by anything black or red.)

Knights need some love brother! LOL. I have a similar deck and spot removal and board wipes (not as common) are problematic but Mother of Runes has helped a LOT! She's less than 2 bucks and is a one drop and human-which fits. I know you're a budget builder-I am not LOL. Cavern of Souls would be a great investment, if you're willing to pony up, and will stop counter magic until they Ghost Quarter or Field of Ruin it. Still, would buy you some time. Any of the pro-red knights would be good in SB for burn. Guardian of Faith will stop board wipes or even spot removal since you get to choose your targets so you don't HAVE to phase out your whole field. That card was a game changer for me and it's a knight and cheap (also less than 2 bucks). Nice shenanigans too since he has "flash". For a 3 mana 3/2 that is white and cheap, a knight, AND flashes in to prevent removal he's pretty much the MVP of my deck (between him and Exemplar). I've read through your iterations and it feels like you landed on the right mix!! Your deck is essentially the same as mine except I do run Caverns, Mother and Guardian and a few more fetches to thin the deck. Nephalia Academy is SUPER CHEAP and, while it does not take the place of Leyline of Sanctity it does deal with discard strategies and used to sit in my SB but I run a couple copies main now. I have run this deck with Aether Vial but it just gets too "muddy" on early drops and invariably almost every competitive deck runs Stony Silence in SB so that makes vials pretty useless. Auriok Champion is a great (human) SB card and so is Sanctifier en-Vec especially with dredge decks. Paladin en-Vec is another good choice and kills Rakdos strategies. A lot of people will say that Knights isn't competitive in the current modern meta but I have a pretty competitive location where they get roughly 50 participants every Friday night for FNM and my knights never go worse than 2-2. I've had a few 4-0 nights and a lot of 3-1 finishes. I don't always play knights but when I do it's competitive enough to feel good.

Just looks a little light on creatures, there arent that many good knights in just orzhov when you're not an equipment matters deck, because cards like Balan, Wandering Knight and Puresteel Paladin get pushed out. Have you thought about Midnight Reaper? I like playing all the protection knights like Stillmoon Cavalier Mirran Crusader Paladin en-Vec Stromgald Crusader White Shield Crusader Phyrexian Crusader because they dodge a lot of spot removal and get through blockers.

I do like the bird a lot. Love the tribe, been trying to make them good for a long time lol.

Stuffy Doll does nothing to clear your opponents board of creatures. With Pestilence you fill it with Mirran Crusader and Paladin en-Vec type creatures who live through Pestilence to deal combat damage. Last Laugh also put in some work with Pestilence... a single black mana will easily snowball out of control and kill your opponent. It's a really fun casual deck (especially if you ever do multiplayer with 60 card decks).

Hi osiczym, thanks for the comment and sorry for my late reply. I haven't been active on tapped out as much lately.

Totem armor is a great idea and I think I'll buy a few the next time I'm ordering cards. I've looked at totem armor for another one of my decks (Bestowing Auramancer) but I never thought of playing those cards in this deck. Sadly, Felidar Umbra isn't modern legal which is something we're trying to stick to in the group I play with. (Gift of Orzhova is, however, a very powerful lifelink-card as an alternative). Mammoth Umbra is also great, but as you've already said, its CMC is probably too high to really work in this deck. So I think I'd go for either Hyena Umbra or Eland Umbra, not sure which one yet though. Frist strike is good but not as necessary when your creatures are indestructible. The +4 to toughness is probably the best choice since it can help with survival if you don't draw an indestructible card.

Paladin en-Vec is a good card, I'm personally not very fond of playing protection from color, especially in multi-coloured decks as I sometimes accidentally misplay. But that's just my personal preference. I play Knight of Grace and Knight of Malice because I love how their card art matches up, but they could easily be changed for other knights. Vault of the Archangel is a good card and it fits the deck well. Land cards are something I need to get better at overall when it comes to my own deck building skills. I usually just throw in a bunch of basic lands together with a few dual lands and then leave it at that.

Thanks again for taking a look at my deck and for offering suggestions!

Very nice deck! Very original and has a main interesting theme that looks like working well!

My suggestions: I would definitely swap Demonic Vigor for any enchantment with Totem Armor. I’d say preferably Felidar Umbra since lifelink is very powerful addon, but also Eland Umbra to make knights even more though or Hyena Umbra if you really need it for 1 mana (cause you already have fs in most creats). I don’t think you have mana for Mammoth Umbra but if so it really fits your deck giving vigilance and +3 buff. Anyway - totem armor is much better than Demonic because the enchanted creature remains on the table instead of going back to your hand.

Other interesting cards: Paladin en-Vec (I played it couple times and it is just a good card but not sure if it fits your deck well), Vault of the Archangel (you are looking for a good land and combo lifelink + deathtouch (from land) + first strike + vigilance (from your cards) sounds awesome

mostly just fond memories of the block, but Hana Kami and Death Denied was a solid rock base back then, recurring all your threats endlessly, and triggering arcane / spirit triggers each time.

the other fun one was with ravnica, Izzet Guildmage + Lava Spike + Desperate Ritual goes infinite on 6 mana. (cast lava spike for , splice for , copy for , use copy's to copy original, rinse / repeat)

copying spells was the most fun bit for me - nuking out a Paladin en-Vec with Reach Through Mists spicing Glacial Ray was priceless. Spice's big edge over kicker was that it wasn't an additional cost, and therefore not reflected in the CMC of the spell. with it, you can bypass Gaddock Teeg's decree and dump all mana into a single spell, and still be able to cast it

Solid list! I'm almost jealous you have all the beefy boi swords. I like that you aren't focusing on a voltron build. It can certainly end up going for the commander damage but Gwyn really shines with the other knights so you can increase your synergy and crazy shenanigans with the free equipping. This deck seems to have the same kind of synergy goals that mine has and I've had quite a bit of success with it so I'm sure you will too!

I first second the need to include Puresteel Paladin and Leonin Shikari, they have more than earned their value for me. I would maybe suggest considering Phyrexian Crusader for either a potential win-con or for target fodder to protect your other knights. Paladin en-Vec has been great for a cheap little guy with lots of protections, though that one has been great for me because of the playgroup I run in so it's a solid maybe with your list.

How's your mana curve been? I'm seeing the Sol Ring and Arcane Signet but you might consider other mana rocks to get the knights rolling a little faster.

And last but not least, absolutely consider trading out the Marauder's Axe for Bloodforged Battle-Axe. It's cheaper to cast and can get out of control since the tokens it makes also have the ability to create tokens; most times when I cast it I hear groans from the other players because they know it stacks pretty fast when equipped to protected knights.

Why use white knight, fiendslayer, Mirran crusader, and especially Paladin en-vec???? Not saying there bad cards but the chances someone is using a black and red deck are slim. Mirran is a overcosted knight with the same problem except green. Paladin en-vec is a 3 cost white knight. Now compare Paladin en-Vec to Danitha Capashen, Paragon
