Illusionary Terrain

Enchantment

Cumulative upkeep (2) (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

As Illusionary Terrain enters the battlefield, choose two basic land types.

Basic lands of the first chosen type are of the second chosen type.

Sadly, doesn't work. The key part that makes Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth work is "in addition to its other land types".

Blood Moon, Conversion, Glaciers, Illusionary Terrain, and Song of the Dryads don't have that text, so they'll only be one type at a time :/

Urborg and Yavimaya do stack to make forest+swamp+whatever though. I'm sure in a couple years, we'll have versions of those lands and this can be fully realized.

Balaam__ after much deliberation, I think I've found some cards I would want to "collaborate" in the way you described:

  1. Ghost Ship
  2. Brimstone Dragon
  3. Drudge Spell
  4. Didgeridoo
  5. Mystic Decree
  6. Soraya the Falconer
  7. Willow Priestess
  8. Altar of Bone
  9. Chaos Moon
  10. Curse of Marit Lage
  11. Elemental Augury
  12. Forgotten Lore
  13. Game of Chaos
  14. Illusionary Terrain
  15. Kjeldoran Escort

It was so hard to wittle my list down to only 15 choices but I wanted to pick stuff from a large timespan; I know how you favor older, more flavorful cards!

Throughout the list you'll see things from throughout Homelands, Ice Age, and the like.

Admittedly some were not as strong picks as others in terms of building, but each one I chose for a bit of flavor, and a bit of "hey this card never gets love".

I hope these seem like appealing choices because I think each has a little "fringe-casual-upset-win-at-the-kitchen-table" kinda vibe.

I appreciate the opportunity again and can't wait to hear back from you!

Jeez, that's a difficult one to justify. Okay, so, based on Grixis, I can see that.

Bolas' Gnat

Creature - Insect

As an additional cost to cast Bolas' Gnat, return a Swamp you control to your hand.

Flying, First strike, Deathtouch

1/1

I think that adequately justifies Izzet Deathtouch. I can legally be played in EDH, btw bc Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, as well as Grixis Illusionist, which would certainly be reprinted along side this beauty. Dream Thrush could actually be with it in a flying matters deck. A fun card in stax, Illusionary Terrain (that plus Urborg or Blood Moon can be rather fun).

Also, Realmwright and Trait Doctoring could finally have use (I know they have some use, but this'd be another.

Can I see an uncommon black flyer or card which grants flying?

Ooh, likewise with protection Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots are another two staples for commander protection.

Another devious ploy I have is if someone is running a mono color deck, for some reason, you can run Illusionary Terrain or Reality Twist . In fact, cumulative upkeep cards are typically good in Muldrotha decks, since you can always recur them if the upkeep gets too high and just play them out of the graveyard. Mystic Remora . Or just a Rhystic Study .

Tormod's Crypt is some nice 0 mana recur-able graveyard hate, if needed in your playgroup.

I have also had a good time with Sultai Ascendancy , and other draw filters. Eternal Witness is another great card to bring back instants and sorceries. Another overperformer is Unbridled Growth , which not only helps with mana filtering, but is a consistent pay one draw one ever turn.

Having general protection stuff is good too: Propaganda . Imprisoned in the Moon and Song of the Dryads can permanently lock out some commanders, and unless they can kill them in response, they don't even get to go back to the command zone unless they have enchantment or land removal (good luck red).

I have my own Muldrotha deck, Finalized Muldrotha, if you want to take a look

613.7a An effect is said to “depend on” another if (a) it’s applied in the same layer (and, if applicable, sublayer) as the other effect (see rules 613.1 and 613.3); (b) applying the other would change the text or the existence of the first effect, what it applies to, or what it does to any of the things it applies to; and (c) neither effect is from a characteristic-defining ability or both effects are from characteristic-defining abilities. Otherwise, the effect is considered to be independent of the other effect.

Effects are applied one at a time to the gamestate, not individual permanents, which is why this references "what it applies to." If Illusionary Terrain is dependant on Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, it will not apply to any lands until urborg has applied.

Aren't basic Swamps turned into Island Swamps after the first Illusionary Terrain comes into play, as they aren't dependant on Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to be Swamps in the first place, just like in Gidget's example? And so, as only they would be Swamps after the first Illusionary Terrain hits the battlefield, only they would be effected by the second Illusionary Terrain?

Rhadamanthus on Can Illusionary Terrain replace two …

Yesterday: In that example the second Illusionary Terrain doesn't do anything. Since the Terrains aren't dependent on one another they're applied in timestamp order. That means the first Terrain turns Swamps into Islands and then there's nothing left for the second Terrain to apply to.

Gidgetimer on Can Illusionary Terrain replace two …

Going a little beyond the scope of the question (since dependencies are one area of the rules I am weak on), dependencies are per permanent right? So if Illusionary Terrain is on the battlefield naming Swamps are Plains and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth enters:

  • All Basic Plains, Islands, Mountains, and Forests are Plains because of dependency.

  • All Basic Swamps are both Plains and Swamps because Illusionary Terrain applying to them is not dependent upon Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.

Do I have that right or do effects have to apply to everything in the same order?
