SOTC on isshin samurai tribal

Hey Breastiny, good to see other people brewing with Isshin!

I'd see about maybe running Kentaro, the Smiling Cat as a cheap mana-fixer, to ensure you never have the wrong colors. Fumiko the Lowblood is an excellent card here; your opponents are forced to swing, even with creature they don't want want to attack with. They will either attack other opponents (helping you win) or attack into a pumped-up Fumiko, which will lose them their creatures. In a true Samurai tribal deck, Nagao, Bound by Honor, Takeno, Samurai General, Konda, Lord of Eiganjo and Godo, Bandit Warlord can't be omitted.

As niche picks, consider Iizuka the Ruthless and Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo. The former will put your foes on the back foot, as they never know when the double strike might come through. The latter provides defensive utility, especially late-game when you have access to more mana.

On the non-Samurai end of things, some Equipment that synergizes with Isshin seems like a good call. Sword of the Animist gets even better by fetching you 2 basics instead of 1, while Sigil of Valor and Reaper's Talisman double up on your other 'attacks alone' effects. Other Equipment improved by Isshin includes Argentum Armor, Delver's Torch, Moonsilver Spear Sword of Hours and Trepanation Blade. If you find yourself in need of additional (non-Samurai) cannon fodder, Captain's Claws and Sigiled Sword of Valeron will do in a pinch.

Hope this helps! Good luck :)

I really like this idea. As there are two different artworks for Brothers Yamazaki, you would definitely have to play one of each.

After a quick reasearch, the are cards to consider:

Iizuka the Ruthless

Godo, Bandit Warlord

Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho

To make Izuka a little better, adding some more samurai might be good. There aren't that many in red. If you go voltron, adding a little deathtouch is useful by itself, and it's ridiculous with Ronin Cliffrider.

Blackblade Reforged, Grappling Hook, Empyrial Plate, Fireshrieker are useful weapons. Also maybe bludgen brawl to have enough equipment for each of your commanders.

Second crash328, Red could be fun for this. Pashalik Mons I could see getting out of hand fast. Possibly Iizuka the Ruthless .

There's plenty of blue where you could possibly do something similiar with artifacts but I'd be curious what could be done with Jalira, Master Polymorphist with this theme. Maybe Thromok the Insatiable

Also, Hijack instead of Blind with Anger could work. For enchantments, I would have to suggest Brave the Sands and maybe Always Watching . One last suggestion would be Iizuka the Ruthless. Iizuka may seem flawed, but I find that it preforms quite well.

If you can get your hands on a couple of Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho, and some Indebted Samurai, those would be worthwhile adds. I'm actually experimenting with my samurai tribal right now, gonna try and add red and get aggro with it :D Iizuka the Ruthless , Fumiko the Lowblood. I played very actively right around when Kamigawa block came out and I've always held a deep fondness for the whole set.

Hidden Fortress
Legendary Land
General's Home: Iizuka the Ruthless
: Add or or to your manapool.
Whenever a Samurai you control would take damage, prevent 1 of that damage.
, Sacrifice Hidden Fortress: Search your graveyard for Samurai, and return them to your hand, then discard that many cards.

His problem is being Red when most Samurai are White (with a couple in Black), so this land fixes the color identity of the archetype, while synergizing with his ability.

Let's do another!

Iizuka the Ruthless + Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho + Runed Stalactite + Mountain + Genju of the Spires + Heartstone + Thousand-Year Elixir + Paradox Engine + 4 mana doublers below = Infinite Combo.

And all of these mana doublers will be needed to go infinite: Extraplanar Lens, Gauntlet of Power, Gauntlet of Might, Caged Sun, Mana Flare, and Chaos Moon. Could do a Soulbright Flamekin as well, but I don't know if the math works out.

  • Main Phase 1:
  • Iizuka the Ruthless, Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho, Runed Stalactite, an Mountain, Heartstone, Thousand-Year Elixir, and Paradox Engine are all out on board. Genju of the Spires in hand.
    Mountain for (5).
→ Cast Genju of the Spires on the Mountain. Down to (4).
→ In response to casting Genju of the Spires, TRIGGERED abilities layer with timestamps. Paradox Engine being the only one. Paradox Engine untaps all nonland permanents.
    Genju of the Spires resolves.
→ Activate Genju of the Spires's ability animating the enchanted Mountain. Down to (2).
→ Activate Thousand-Year Elixir's ability, the enchanted, animated Mountain spirit. Down to (1).
the enchanted, animated Mountain spirit for (5). End up with (6).
→ Attach Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho and Runed Stalactite to the enchanted, animated Mountain spirit. Down to (2).
→ Sacrifice the enchanted, well-armed, animated Mountain changeling to Iizuka the Ruthless. Down to (0).
→ In in response to the enchanted, well-armed, animated Mountain changeling dying, TRIGGERED abilities layer with timestamps. Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho first, then Genju of the Spires. Genju of the Spires resolves first, returning to hand. Then Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho resolves returning the precious Mountain back to play .
Iizuka the Ruthless's activated ability then resolves with all Samurai gaining double strike until end of turn.
    → Repeat.

Add additional mana doublers to get infinite mana. Add a Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle with 5 other Mountains in play to insta-win. Temple Bell to deck yourself or opponents.

EDIT: Felt like something was fishy. Figured out that Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho checks if it is a Samurai in the graveyard, not when it dies. I'm used to Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker. Apologies. And even a Ashes of the Fallen doesn't fix this. (Oathkeepers second ability checks whether the cards creature type is Samurai, not whether the creature was a Samurai when it left the battlefield.)

EDIT 2: I did all the work and math for nothing so I'm not going to do it again, but I imagine you could replace Genju of the Spires, Runed Stalactite and the Mountain in the combo with Soulbright Flamekin, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, and Ashes of the Fallen to make it work. THAT WOULD BE EPIC.

Does the title of this count as clickbait if I don't even try?

    What makes an Unplayable commander?

I'm using EDHREC'S list of Unplayable commander's. They are commander's that have less then three decks on tapped out, you can find the list here.

    How does this work?

I'll randomly select a commander. I'll build the rough skeleton. You send me suggestions for weird cards for it. And we'll cut it down and ship it. Let's put the minds of the internet to the test

    TLDR; What's the deck already

Because Samurai and I have such a great history.

    Iizuka the Ruthless

So White samurai didnt' do much for me

so logically the best solution is to go to a color with less samurai.

At least his ability is better.
