Very original deck!

Really like your idea with the Coal Stoker, simple but effective.

Every time I see Smokebraider I think of old Lorwin tribal spells, like Nameless Inversion and Wings of Velis Vel. If you ever think of adding another color, these would be good imo!

Saccox: Thanks for the suggestions — very interesting!

The "core" of the group Lavakin Brawler / Earth Servant / Claws of Valakut , came from an old casual deck I built from my collection, and I've since been auditioning better elementals to help bolster the original troop.

I'd been leaning on Brighthearth Banneret for ramp, and initially, I had Soulbright Flamekin to provide trample, and thought his ability could produce infinite mana, but it didn't work in practise. The Runaway Steam-Kin seems like it could combo-out a string of mana in the way I was hoping Soulbright might.

I had overlooked Smokebraider too, thinking of her more for mana-fixing, but might have to try her out as well. Coal Stoker looks promising too — with a Brighthearth Banneret in play, he's essentially a "free cast", and I'm always looking to fill up the board to help out the Lavakin Brawler 's fists!

You don't want your game to be ruined because someone countered/destroyed the creature that you ramped into. Cut Cone of Flame ,add Lightning Bolt .Cone of Flame doesn't do much, but Lightning Bolt it is much cheaper and can deal with early threats while you try to get things together. cut Magmatic Insight and add Thrill of Possibility maybe, play around with it. Cut Flameblast Dragon and 1x Tectonic Hellion to add 3x Irencrag Feat . Cut Coal Stoker add Simian Spirit Guide , this will allow you to get your combo together as early as turn 1 if you are lucky and draw 2 of them, or turn 2 more consistently.

Reason for cutting Flameblast Dragon : You are trying to cast a big creature as early as possible,so with Flameblast Dragon, once you get it out, you will not have much mana to pour into its ability, so it will generally be a 5/5 flyer that might do 1-2 damage.

Substitutions I would make all depend on your collection really. But in terms of good creatures, theres a litmus test (sort of).

  1. Does it have a major impact on the board? Lets compare your Rust Scarab to Indrik Stomphowler. They both destroy something, but one does it right away, and one is situational that your opponents can play around. Theres very few situations where the Scarab is gonna be better than the stomphowler, and very rarely do you want to play around niche situations. So basically, does the creature add value to your deck, and are there better options, and if the answer is no, that creature is probably good.

  2. Does it serve a purpose outside of the theme? Elvish Mystic probably falls in this category. Its a good ramp card and is probably worth running. Sakura-Tribe Elder is another good one. They help you thin your deck and ramp to the mana you need to explode all over the place. Theyre good to go. Coal Stoker and to some extent Burning-Tree Emissary? Not as impactful and sometimes the mana isnt getting used. So those could probably be cut.

  3. Is it a great card? Seems simple enough, but some cards are just fucking great, like Bloodbraid Elf. Its a 3/2 haste for 4, which is okay, but that cascade... so hot. Free cards are value trains to ride all day. 2 for 1s, creatures you can play by themselves and just sit there being badass (think Geth, Lord of the Vault type cards), those are great shit for edh.

  4. Does it fit your theme? Obviously you dont have to necessarily have a theme or follow one tightly, but some people like to, and Im one of those people, so this is a huge part of my decision making when it comes to card inclusions. For your theme, youre beating face all day every day, whippin out that damage and not giving a fuck. Your creatures should follow suit. Rubric Thar does that just fine.

Thats a basic way to figure it out.

Also, Krosan Grip.

Wheres Burning-Tree Emissary? I feel this deck could also use another 1 drop mana dork or you can go the routes of

Other creatures that generate mana when ETB: Akki Rockspeaker, Priest of Gix, Priest of Urabrask, Coal Stoker, Hidden Herbalists or Mardu Warshrieker.

or other tinderwall creatures: Blood Pet, Generator Servant, Nest Invader, Pawn of Ulamog, Skirk Prospector, or Blisterpod to help generate mana.
