Cauldron's Gift

Sorcery

Adamant — If at least three black mana was spent to cast this spell, put the top four cards of your library into your graveyard.

You may choose a creature card in your graveyard. If you do, return it ot the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it.

77hi77 on How Much Removal is Too …

I've been playing this in Standard on MTGArena:

My big question is, how much of the deck should go to countering other decks? The two most common decks I'm running into are either White or White/Black life gain, usually based on Impassioned Orator and Hallowed Priest, or the decks that stack mutations. In both cases, I find I have to kill the creatures while they're still small. Life gainers build a swarm of huge creatures and I suddenly find myself unable to contain them, mutations get so many disruptive effects that I don't have an answer. So how much removal is too much and how much should I focus on just playing my game?

A previous version of this deck had 13 removal cards, I felt like that was taking focus away from the main objective so I made this one. Is there a balance to hit between disrupting other playing styles and playing your own game?

Thanks!

Other than the bounce artifacts you already have in the deck, you should also look into reanimation effects to get your commander out onto the field again, like Meren of Clan Nel Toth, Once and Future, Bond of Revival, Cauldron's Gift, or Eternal Witness. Golgari doesn't have a lot of bounce effects but does have a lot of graveyard recurrence, which also should keep your commander a little cheaper than just playing it from the command zone over and over since you keep it in your graveyard instead of sending it to the command zone, where it will steadily get more expensive.

What aboutGemrazer? He can help you againstGrafdigger's Cage. He is going for under a buck in paper.Questing Beast isn't too expensive and could be a good beater creature.Cauldron's Giftcan throw a bunch of stuff in the yard and can beef upFiend Artisan and summon him if need be.

I cannot believe Fiend Artisan is going for 25.00. What aboutCauldron's Gift in the deck?

Cards to remove-

Congregation at Dawn - Tutors are great and normally I would not suggest pulling one, however since you are not looking for a combo with it and it is outside the flavor of the them I would say pull it.

Rowan, Fearless Sparkmage - Does not provide enough value to keep

The Cauldron of Eternity - Needs to be built around and will cost too much

Petals of Insight - Costs too much for what it does

Silverflame Ritual - not a bad card but it does not hurt the goal of the deck to cut

Cauldron's Gift - Not a bad include especially with the amount of sacrifice you have in the deck.. But there is not enough recursion going to really justify keeping it.

Chalice of Life  Flip- A bit slow and your not focusing on lifegain

Emry, Lurker of the Loch - just not running enough artifacts to justify the slot

Drown in the Loch -Not a bad card but we got to cut something

Korvold, Fae-Cursed King - A great great card, but I think it will do you more harm than good. Also needs to be built around

Cards to switch out- You are probably running too light on ramp in general since this is a 5 color deck. You have roughly 6 ramp spells in the deck, I would suggest more to make sure you have enough mana to be able to play spells on curve. Adding signets will be helpful since they will help with color fixing and can provide some decent ramp for 2 mana. The obelisks work well, but if you do add signets I would say to add most of them and replace the obelisks with signets.

Possibly replace Think Twice and Reach Through Mists with Brainstorm and Ponder since they are much more efficient and provide better value for the slots.

Overall it is not a bad deck for the theme it is going for. It's power level won't be high since it is a theme deck so you are sacrificing card slots for flavor. But there is nothing wrong with that if you enjoy it. I would say pull the cards suggested, maybe swap out the obelisks and just play test the deck and see what needs to be done from there. Most likely color fixing/ramp as well as maybe improving the card draw a bit (just swapping out for more efficient cards) is what you will need to work on. But for a fairy tale deck I'd say it is on point for it's theme.

sigh normally I would contribute the mistakes I made in that comment to tiredness, but I woke up very rested today... Let me correct some of my mistakes. Yeah, Gravedigger was in M20. The version in your list is M19, which messed me up, but you're right. You are also right about Cauldron's Gift , which is a great card in this deck. I meant to say Forever Young , which does eat up draws.

I think you might also do well replacing Witch's Cottage . It's almost a dead card until you get 3 swamps out, and it has the same "eating up draws" effect as Forever Young in that it puts that card on top of your library.

Sorin_Markov_1947 Thanks for the comment.

Gravedigger was printed in M20 so it is definitely Brawl legal.

I keep thinking Field of the Dead just needs seven other lands, not seven other lands with different names. I'll take that out.

Revenge of Ravens was in the deck because it was a good black card, but I've found that it's usually a dead card in my hand so I took it out for Dread Presence .

I've liked Cauldron's Gift so far. In one game on turn 5, that card dumped and reanimated Vilis, Broker of Blood on turn 5 or 6. I'm not sure what you mean when you say cauldron's gift has 'eats up the draws'.

I do like The Cauldron of Eternity and Witch's Oven . Thanks for the suggestions!

I think I would switch Junktroller and Chromatic Lantern for more surveil like Deadly Visit Doom Whisperer . Also I think your whole food-creature focus is not very good if you really want your commander to deal the damage. Reanimate spells like Cauldron's Gift would maybe help more and can bring your commander back when he inevitably gets focused
