Cackling Fiend Discussion

Zombies! I dig it!

Do you play against a meta where swampwalk is usually effective? If not, there are some potential replacements that synergize more with Konrad wanting bodies coming and going from the grave.

If you want more discard to get creature cards in graveyards, Black Cat, Miasmic Mummy, Sibsig Icebreakers and Cackling Fiend work nicely. Returned Centaur and Returned Reveler do something similar with milling.

Other Gravedigger effects like Grave Scrabbler work well with Konrad, as does Gurmag Angler and exiling from your own graveyard. Zombie Scavengers lets you exile every creature in your library at instant speed to zap the table with Konrad if you need to. Herald of the Dreadhorde and Lazotep Reaverget you lots of extra bodies to die.

Wight of Precinct Six can become a big threat once you start to fill everyone's yard (perhaps more threatening than Null Champion).

Lurching Rotbeast is card draw on top of a Konrad trigger, as is Spark Reaper.

A little light on ramp, but your Twisted Abomination combos nicely with your Witch's Cottage to do double-duty.

All great suggestions, thanks!
I feel like Cackling Fiend and Wicked Guardian are a little too expensive for what they offer.
I haven't tested yet as I don't own the deck yet but if I find myself needing more board wipe I'll make room for Gangrenous Zombies .
All the recursion stuff is sweet, I'll definitely be making room for some amount of that stuff.

Gangrenous Zombies would be a good addition, as would Cackling Fiend . Vulturous Aven and Wicked Guardian are a couple moore creatures that could draw you cards.

Some cards I like to use in my deck are the Unhallowed Pact variants to get some extra devotion if you use them on something other than Gary. You've got Shade's Form , Kaya's Ghostform , and Unholy Indenture . In addition there is Abnormal Endurance .

Also I would cut Chittering Rats for something like Arterial Flow , Cackling Fiend , or even Caligo Skin-Witch . Heck, even Cunning Lethemancer is better - I would rather affect all opponents than just one, and putting a card back on top is just not satisfying for me. Your call though!

I have a special place in my heart for cards like Capital Punishment and Delirium Skeins but they are more conditional.

Saw your post on /r/edh. I've been tweaking a casual mono-black Belzenlok for a while now (...bascially Necrologia -on-a-commander into every version of Rise of the Dark Realms ).

Chainer's game plan should be something like... Ramp > Control > Reanimate.

Focus on filling and stealing from your opponents' graveyards and protecting Chainer.

Stax: Honestly, I would avoid hard stax. It encourages your opponents to hate you and escalate their power-level.

What this deck really needs is ramp: 38-40 lands and 12-16 cards like Bubbling Muck , Charcoal Diamond , Heartless Summoning , Burnished Hart , Coalition Relic , Revel in Riches , Black Market , Magus of the Coffers , Gauntlet of Power , Nirkana Revenant , etc. Also Phyrexian Tower .

I'd recommend Dark Deal and Ward of Bones as soft stax. The first fits right into your game plan and the second is pretty clutch vs. artifacts and enchantments.

Board wipes like Boompile , Nevinyrral's Disk , Coercive Portal , Perilous Vault are very necessary in mono-black because they are some of the only ways to deal with artifacts and enchantments.

...If you want to lean into stax... here's a list for evil people :)

Bone Shredder seems like a perfect budget option, especially since it can put itself back in the graveyard. Liliana's Specter is a better Cackling Fiend. Gray Merchant of Asphodel can help give the deck some longevity and a possible win con in the late game. Crypt Rats can give you a semi-wrath effect. Blasphemous Act and Planar Collapse are a couple other budget-friendly wrath effects.

I like the Cathars' Crusade that was mentioned above, because while this deck can slowly wear down opponents it doesn't have much that lets it go for the kill. If you do include it, you may want to look at a few more token producers like Mogg War Marshal to help shore up early game defences and get more counters in the late game.

You're using a lot of cards that really aren't great... Some cards you really want to look at are Geth's Grimoire, Solemn Simulacrum and Phyrexian Arena.

Some cards you want to remove are... Ho, boy, here comes a list: Starke of Rath, Spirit en-Dal, Pilgrim's Eye, Mardu Heart-Piercer, Mad Prophet, Ghitu Slinger, Deal Broker, Cackling Fiend, Bloodsoaked Champion and Crystal Ball. I am not sure what you'd want instead of them, but none of them are very optimal. Some of them are mana-syncs you don't want to use. and in general you don't want to discard cards to draw.
