SaberTech on Help creating a commander deck

Hi Angelsprout, welcome to the game! Starting out with Commander will be a little tough in the beginning because it is a format that benefits a lot from having a large collection but cards don't rotate out like they do in Standard so you get longer use out of the cards that you buy. Your deck will improve over time as you slowly pick up new cards for it. The commander that you are starting with also has black and green, which I think are the best colours to start off with in Commander because a lot of the good cards in those colours that you'll want can be used in lots of other decks, so I think that you are off to a good start! The game has lots of support cards for +1/+1 counter and sacrifice strategies too.

Honestly, it's a little hard to help with the deck when we don't know all the cards you have at this point. My suggestion would be to watch a few youtube videos on building commander decks so that you understand the sorts of cards that a commander deck needs. After that, try to make a list of your own and post it with a link to it in this thread. It doesn't matter how good or bad the starting deck list is. Just having a starting point of some sort will make it a lot easier for everyone to make suggestions to help you build the best deck with the cards that you have, and maybe even offer some budget options for cards you could buy to quickly upgrade for cheap.

If you search "The Command Zone, Commander Deck Building Template for the New Era" on youtube, that video will give you a good starting point.

The video "Felothar, Dawn of the Abzan EDH Deck Tech" by New Horizons MTG will also give you a good idea of the sorts of cards you would want in a Felothar deck. It doesn't matter if you have the cards that are suggested in the video, just do your best to put in similar sorts of cards from your collection into your deck list and people here can help you work out options from there.

Since we at least know the cards in the 2023 Starter Kit, I think that Dusk Legion Duelist, Siege Veteran, Storm the Seedcore, Boon-Bringer Valkyrie, Silverback Elder, In the Trenches, Cooped Up, and Broken Wings would all work as decent cards to include from the start.

Hey, good WIP for Angels, nice Avacyn and Tithe.

When you break it down to the very basics of what you need for Angels it's three things: Angels, ramp and draw. Angels because you want to cast/attack with Angels, ramp because you want to be able to consistently cast your higher mana cost (4+ CMC) Angels and repeatable draw because you want to keep having Angels in your hand to cast. The better Angels you want to attack with, including Liesa, have a high mana cost, without more ramp you'll have a more difficult time casting them. Consider more lower mana cost (1-3 CMC) ramp and more repeatable draw sources?

In my opinion, a good rule for casual Commander deck building is having at least 10 sources of draw and at least 10 sources of ramp, allocate deck room for these. These are the most important two effects to have for smoother gameplay. Better overall gameplay makes playing Commander more fun since you'll get less frustrated with how your deck is running. Consider cutting a few of the lesser power cards compared to other cards here for more ramp and draw?

Add:

Cut:

Some land upgrades to consider that are within the budget for the manabase: Caves of Koilos, Fetid Heath, Shineshadow Snarl, Great Hall of Starnheim, Tyrite Sanctum, Vault of the Archangel, Soulstone Sanctuary, Path of Ancestry

I hope this advice is helpful and I offer more if you're interested, about the potential adds/cuts I've suggested.

Out: Hindervines, Heaven / Earth, High Sentinels of Arashin, Wood Elves, Together Forever, Triskelion, Semester's End

In: Boon-Bringer Valkyrie, Agitator Ant, Evolution Sage, Orzhov Advokist, Evolutionary Escalation, Swiftfoot Boots, Botanical Brawler

A larger update in an effort to build counters. Taking out superfluous or higher value one shot effects for things that can provide counters regularly. This also lowered my curve ever so slightly.

Now that the full card list is up and searchable I figured this is the current breakdown.

Invasion of Gobakhan  Flip flips to Lightshield Array  Flip

The front side of this battle card doesn't do much except maybe slow down the strongest player. We wouldn't necessarily play it on curve but flipping the battle would be pretty easy and its effects would happen the same turn we flip it. Not only does it grow the entire angel army with continued aggro it serves as a protection piece against single target removal or damage spells which is great. Also, when we sacrifice it the battle goes into graveyard which can then be recurred with Serra Paragon or Emeria Shepherd.

Firemane Commando

I fully suspect this card to be double digits on release as it does so much for white aggro decks. Getting card draw on an angel stick is great and it curves out perfectly. It also encourages others to aggro your opponents, usually the combo players.

Guardian of Ghirapur

There aren't many 3CMC angels and this one has a pretty useful ability. Unfortunately we don't have too many ETB targets for it. Typical targets would be Inspiring Overseer or Sanctuary Warden for the draw or a mana rock to drop more threats.

Chivalric Alliance

This enchantment has the same effect as Firemane Commando but lacks any other useful effects. It fits into the same category as Folk Hero as it'll essentially be a draw a card per turn. While Hero would require Giada to be out, Alliance would require 2 creatures to attack. I figure after a board wipe it would be faster to draw with Hero as you could drop Giada and another angel and draw. If you have Alliance then you could do the same but then need to wait a full turn to attack in order to draw.

Conjurer's Mantle

This equipment is great for tribal decks and can serve as additional card draw for 3CMC total. I'd say it serves a better purpose than Rogue's Gloves as the total cost is 1 less and it provides a slight buff, provides vigilance, triggers on attack instead of combat damage and can pull threats from the deck. On the off-chance that it whiffs then it's obviously worse but with 29 Angels in the deck statistically there's 1.75 Angels out of 6 cards.

Surge of Salvation

This was mentioned in an article as the best white card of the set. I think it serves as a decent protection spell for 1 but I'm not sure how many we'd actually want in the deck.

Invasion of Dominaria flips to Serra Faithkeeper

Apparently this card isn't in the database yet but gaining 4 life and drawing a card is OK for 3CMC. It'll help trigger the lifegain payouts when there's no lifelinker on board. It also flips into a Serra Angel which is decent although you need 5 damage to flip it. I also like how it's recurrable like Invasion of Gobakhan  Flip.

Boon Bringer Valkyrie

5CMC for its effects just aren't that great.
