To be honest with you, the competitive meter here means almost nothing, I honestly dont know how it is calculated. haha. The strongest meren lists i have seen are Hermit Druid combo lists. how that combo works is like this (synopsis by SynergyBuild years ago, but still relevant because he is a badass) "Nah, by using the five color lands (City of Brass, Mana Confluence, Forbidden Orchard, Tarnished Citadel, Exotic Orchard, and Reflecting Pool), along with fetchlands, you can build up a fast (low to no tapped lands), consistent (at getting your colors), and no-basic landbase for Hermit Druid to deck you. Bring back Dregscape Zombie and Bloodghast, sacrifice them to Dread Return, bring back Necrotic Ooze, then use Wall of Roots's ability to activate Blighted Bat's, then make infinite mana between Devoted Druid and Channeler Initiate, then use Walking Ballista to instantly win the game!"

As a bonus, Ballista combos with Mikaeus as well, so you have some synergies between the two. Things like Entomb and Buried Alive will net you Hermit early so you can access him in a hurry. Some fast mana in the form of creatures and rituals, some nice interaction like you already have, and bringing the average manavalue of your deck down will help as well. You are already runnning Stitcher's Supplier which is my favorite bit of tech. Ramunap Excavator is another solid bit of tech I really like to combine with Azusa, Lost but Seeking to get all kinds of value. Blood Pet, Stinkweed Imp, and Golgari Thug are all good bits of tech for Meren. The Gitrog Monster is also surprisingly good for us. The card draw he can get us with a little bit of ssetup is nothing to be scoffed at. To be honest, the main issue i am having currently is finding solid self-mill options.

Zallce on Mairsil's Got an App for That

Just some questions and suggestions, I'm no pro but I've been interested in building a Mairsil deck for quite some time and yours looks amazing!

  1. Saw Blighted Bat in another deck, looked like an extremely cheap way to grant haste

  2. How necessary is Training Grounds ? most of the abilities cost like 0 to 2 mana so idk if it really is worth it to put it in there.

  3. No protection like Propaganda ? is it a good idea to keep deterring cards like that out of this deck? I thought that if I didn't have stuff like that in a deck like this then it would be really easy for people to wail on me.

  4. The +1 counters stuff, never thought about doing it with him before, but is it really worth it since when he exiles himself he loses all those counters? I'm guessing you've played this a bit so I'm interested in how viable it actually is. Also goes hand in hand with the Darksteel Plate discussion, if you're exiling him all the time, doesn't it get expensive to keep equipping him?

I am interested in the +1 counters strategy though, I was trying to think of other ways to win with him since I am planning on building a themed deck with him as Corvo from Dishonored, I thought it would be dope as hell exiling artifacts and creatures like bone charms and giving him new abilities. I plan on buying it soon and will play it in my group and see what my friends think of, thanks for the awesome tech!

If you do decide to build Mairsil, the Pretender, basically what you do is you make half your deck cards that have an activated ability, then lands and little bit of other whatever.

Some really good cards for Mairsil with activated abilities are:

Blighted Bat (Gives haste)

Cinderhaze Wretch (Discard+Untap)

Doom Whisperer (Mills, good for setting up Mairsil)

Horseshoe Crab (Untaps)

Kozilek, the Great Distortion (Counters stuff)

Mirror-Mad Phantasm (Not sure about ruling, but dumps portion of library in grave)

Morphling (Untap+Shroud)

Quicksilver Elemental (Targeting Mairsil, makes it so he can do his abilities any number of times per turn, it's gnarly)

Pendant of Prosperity (Again, weird rulings, but I believe it gives you crazy value because you control Mairsil aka Pendant and your its owner.)

Gilded Lotus (Should hopefully be obvious)

Mainboard Cuts: Worn Powerstone kinda sucks. I'd rather pay one more for Hedron Archive or even Sisay's Ring.

Cathartic Reunion is just better Tormenting Voice in your deck. Run Chandra hugging mom instead of Tormenting.

Cuts from the Sideboard listed cards:

Prismatic Geoscope: Running 18 basics means you might not always get 3 mana from it, more like 2. Eitherway I feel it's bad as a rock and lackluster as a cage target.

25 cards I'll suggest for <15$ (EDHREC TCGPLAYER listed prices, may be higher or lower):

  1. Final Parting: Double tutor, one to the yard one to hand. Good investment for 5 mana. It's no Buried Alive but we can't expect many cards to be. (Price: .90)

  2. Cephalid Inkshrouder: Discard which doesn't matter to make shrouded Mairsil? Hell yeah. (Price: 0.29)

  3. Soliton: Another U: untap is solid. (Price: 0.10)

  4. Forbidden Alchemy: Basically a draw 4 most of the time for 3 mana and can be flashed back if you discard it or mill it another way. (Price: 0.11)

  5. Pestilent Souleater: Can be a backup win con with a card or two that can also pump. (Price: 0.10)

  6. Blighted Bat 1 for haste is worth it when not having Anger in GY or Hammer of Purphoros on board. (Price: 0.05)

  7. Twisted Abomination: Get a land with it then give Mairsil regenerate for a black when his commander tax is too high. Can never have too much protection when the commander is the whole gameplan. (Price: 0.03)

  8. Magus of the Bazaar: Draw 5 for tap on Mairsil. What's not to like? (Price: .46)

  9. Etherium-Horn Sorcerer: 3 To replay Mairsil isn't bad. Also can just be a cascade card if need be. (Price: 0.15)

  10. Cinderhaze Wretch: Untap affect + can be used to disrupt enemies. Also can be used on yourself if you really want for some weird reason? (Price 0.26)

  11. Dreamscape Artist: Discard isn't a downside, and it ramps. Can be put on Mairsil as well if need be. (Price: 0.26)

  12. Vector Asp: B: infect is very strong. Especially with following card. (Price: 0.20)

  13. Spikeshot Elder: This plus infect is a gross combo. Even without R to deal 4 to any target is strong, better than lightning bolt! (Price: 0.21)

  14. Grinning Ignus: A way to bounce Mairsil that's ALSO ramp. Pays for a commander tax! (Price: 0.16)

  15. Frantic Search: Free loot isn't ever bad. Instant speed too. (Price 0.47)

  16. Sinister Sabotage: You don't have much interaction. These next 3 are just interactive pieces to stop your opponents from racing you. Sinister is a good counter that also can basically draw a card with Surveil. (Price: 0.12)

  17. Terminate: No regen for them! Instant speed kill. Nice. (Price: 0.44)

  18. Arcane Denial: Great counterspell that's not mana intensive. (Price: 0.46)

  19. Perplex: Either a counter, makes an opponent lose their hand, or you can transmute to tutor for a 3 drop such as Rings or Commander's Sphere. Very versatile. (Price: 1.24)

  20. AEtherize: Bounce all attackers is a good way to protect yourself, since you already have many ways to protect Mairsil. (Price: 0.23)

21/22. Isochron Scepter/Dramatic Reversal: With enough mana rocks infinite mana and with that you can win for sure. (Price for both: 5.30). I think it's a worth it investment.

  1. Whispering Madness: Wheel that can be repeated. With GY synergies it's amazing. 10/10 (Price 0.57)

  2. Chain Reaction: Boardwhipe most of the time. You need some mass removal. (Price: 0.67)

  3. Pyroclasm: Clears tokens easily. (Price: 0.16)

Total Price: $12.94

Some pump activated abilities may be a good other add.

Sultai_Sir on Zombie, mill, Ooze combo-ish

Hey, Frytrix99! I, too, have a Sidisi deck, and if you're going for a Nooze combo, I would put in Walking Ballista, Wall of Roots and Blighted Bat. Walking Ballista serves as an infinite mana outlet, while Wall of Roots and Blighted Bat let you go off the turn Nooze comes into play without having any additional mana up. For posterity, here's my list: The Deck that Death Forgot. Hope this helps!

I love this deck so much man. Have you thought about making a discord for more conversation and keeping the deck and commander alive?

I've always had a softspot for toolbox and reanimator, and this deck covers it haha

Have you thought about running a discard package with Thoughtseize and/or Inquisition of Kozilek to help you protect your cards and even discard if you need to?

The combo is so robust you could even go Necrotic Ooze with Devoted Druid + Channeler Initiate + Blighted Bat to generate your infinite mana and win with Walking Ballista.

Or (lol) you could use Tayam, Luminous Enigma's ability to pull up Animate Dead/Dance of the Dead/Necromancy to get Leonin Relic-Warder to get infinite etb or death triggers to win from Blood Artist or Corpse Knight!

Have you thought about running Buried Alive or Wishclaw Talisman?

+1 for sure man, great job!
