Bartel Runeaxe Discussion

Optimator on Giant's Deck

It looks like the spoilers that I put the non-Boros giant suggestions aren't working. So weird. I'll try to reconstruct what I suggested.

So I know you had your heart set on Brion as your commander, but I wanted to list all the good giants with , and in their colors, as there are a bunch that are excellent. Brion doesn't bring much to the giant-tribal table other than a small-ish lifelinking Giant body and occasional face-damage. You may want to use Iroas, God of Victory or Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas as your commander if you're dead-set on staying Boros colors. If the idea of fully exploring Giants in Magic's history is the goal, and being the most Giant-y deck, having more colors or all five colors will give you a greater creature spread and significantly help with the deck's function.

Arbor Colossus - great rate! Worth considering

Beanstalk Giant - ramp AND a giant body! Worth considering

Earthshaker Giant - Worth considering

Garenbrig Paladin - playable, but probably wouldn't make the cut in a five-color deck

Gorm the Great - interesting choice, and nice at four mana, but probably not worth a slot

Marshdrinker Giant - odd removal piece.

Nylea's Colossus - good effect even without a ton of enchantment support. Worth considering

Outland Colossus - Worth considering

Rampart Smasher - watch out, Knights! Probably wouldn't make the cut

Skyshroud Troll - Regeneration is always nice, but the stats aren't great

Sunder Shaman - fucking awesome giant. One of the best reasons to consider running Green cards. Can't recommend enough.

Swarmborn Giant - kinda a weird one, but interesting nonetheless

Towering Titan - potentially awesome! Worth considering

Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath - fucking incredible. Pretend you're terrorizing standard! That pricetag though :(

Valleymaker - very interesting utility. Potentially worth considering, but might not make the cut in a five-color deck.

Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig - Absolutely stellar Giant. three on-color might be hard to swing in a five-color deck, although any deck would probably lean Green due to ramp and utility. Very much worth considering.

Frost Titan - outstanding giant. One excellent reason to run Blue. Highly recommended, like all the titans. Too bad Prime-Time is banned! (Primeval Titan)

Galecaster Colossus - extremely strong Giant. better in Wizard-tribal decks, but is still really good on its own.

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic - A real powerhouse. Highly recommended

Ruhan of the Fomori - Another excellent giant. Highly recommended

Skaab Goliath - Pretty decent. Might not make the cut in 5-color but worth considering]

Thryx, the Sudden Storm - Incredible! Ramp AND a flying body. A perfect reason to run Blue. Highly recommended

Bartel Runeaxe - this is a giant. Probably only worth running for the memes. Expensive too. A piece of Giant Magic history though.

Doomwake Giant - Pretty decent even without Enchantment support--lots of one-toughness support creatures out there.

Erebos's Titan - slightly recursive threat. Decent

Grave Titan - an utter powerhouse. One of the best giants. Highly recommended

Grixis Slavedriver - decent for a common. Probably not quite worth a slot.

Helldozer - pretty good! Three on-color might be hard but the payoff is huuuge.

Knight of the Last Breath - leaving behind blockers is pretty good. (Mana)-expensive though.

Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger - Pretend you're terrorizing Standard!! Incredible Giant, but expensive.

Necrosavant - recursive creature, but you probably don't want to be sacrificing giants

Nightfire Giant - could be decent utility. Not the strongest giant but worth looking at

Tithebearer Giant - good for a common I suppose!

So as you can see, there are a bunch of fantastic Giants outside of Red and White colors. The stand-outs on a budget are:

Arbor Colossus - Beanstalk Giant - Earthshaker Giant - Outland Colossus - Sunder Shaman - Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig - Frost Titan - Ruhan of the Fomori - Thryx, the Sudden Storm - Helldozer

I should have a Frost Titan, Arbor Colossus, and Outland Colossus for trade.

Once you have the deck for a while, snagging Grave Titan - Oloro, Ageless Ascetic - Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger - Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath- Towering Titan as upgrades would be well-worth it.

If I don’t discuss a card, it’s because that card didn’t feel like a card I’d want to play, or I didn’t think it was a viable commander. If I miss any really good options for my commander or leader, please let me know.

Adun Oakenshield TL?

Bartel Runeaxe

Darigaaz Reincarnated

Darigaaz, the Igniter

Gyrus, Waker of Corpses TL???

Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund

Korvold, Fae-Cursed King

Kresh the Bloodbraided

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher

Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper

Shattergang Brothers

Thantis, the Warweaver

Vaevictis Asmadi

Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire

Wasitora, Nekoru Queen

Xira Arien TL?

Honestly, looking through this list, most of these cards don’t appeal to me. That said, there were a few that could work if I really felt that I needed to go with Jund. First, Gyrus, Waker of Corpses is really interesting to me as a leader. I could use it as my commander, I guess, but it just isn’t that interesting as an effect to me. I want my commander to have more of an impact on the game than being big, and allowing me to reuse creatures for a turn. I like how it allows me to essentially dash in creatures from my graveyard, retriggering any enter the battlefield effects they may have, and another cool feature that Gyrus, Waker of Corpses has is that it doesn’t really lose value when I recast it from the command zone. I’d much rather spend 9 mana on an 9/9 than spend 12 mana on a 6/5 that’s only really worth 6 but I’m looking for a bit more in a commander, especially since I’ll probably be able to shuffle my graveyard into my library multiple times throughout the game. If I were to use a Jund commander, Gyrus, Waker of Corpses is there, but I know that there’s better commanders for me to choose from. As a leader, however, Gyrus, Waker of Corpses seems awesome. For one thing, he kind of breaks the 3 mana limit by having X in his cost, and bringing cards back from the graveyard is much more useful in a format that doesn’t have any Twilight's Call or Aphetto Dredging in it. For now, I think I’m going to move on, but I may come back to him later when I’m searching for my leader.

Kresh the Bloodbraided intrigues me. I can just imagine… Kresh the Bloodbraided is on the board. I also have a Dread Shade , and a Urabrask the Hidden out. My opponents have full boards with 4+ creatures each; the collective power of all my opponents’ creatures is something like 45. It’s my turn. I draw. GASP! In my hand, I now have Plague Wind . I cast it. SUDDENLY, all of my opponents’ creatures are gone except for one Seraph of the Suns (dang) and I have a 44/44 legendary human warrior, my 3/3 shade, and a praetor that makes all my opponents’ creatures enter tapped. Those are the kind of game-changing plays that I like. Kresh the Bloodbraided is definitely an interesting commander, but I really doubt that I’ll be using him, because besides Plague Wind and In Garruk's Wake , there aren’t any cards that really use him to his full potential. Unless there’s some way to destroy a lot of creatures in a short amount of time, he’ll never get very big, because a 10/10 is a threat that most players can kill and will kill before it becomes much bigger than that. So, Kresh the Bloodbraided just won’t be a very good commander 97.9% of the time (I calculated it) and, in the other 2.1% of games, I have the potential to dominate for a few turns until someone kills Kresh the Bloodbraided through literally any means other than damage, because Jund doesn’t have any decent counterspells besides Avoid Fate , and Regenerate isn’t a very good answer to Murder .

I like the sound of Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire , but without much mill in these colors (besides Altar of the Brood , Waste Not , and Dread Summons , but 3/99 cards isn’t enough to make a mill deck), I don’t see much of a reason to play it. Sure, if one of my opponents plays a Sensei's Divining Top , I can get rid of it and hope that they don’t draw their Paradox Engine , but aside from getting rid of douchey cards I don’t see much of a purpose in playing Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire .

This concludes my exploration of Jund commanders, and since the only options for a Jund leader, besides Gyrus, Waker of Corpses , are Adun Oakenshield and Xira Arien , I don’t think I’ll be using these colors unless I decide to use Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder as my commander, and Gyrus, Waker of Corpses as my leader.

DarkStarStorm on Toxic Relationship: Hapatra EDH [PRIMER]

I've been brewing The Scorpion God and would always look across the fence and notice that the grass is pretty green for negative counter synergies with Hapatra. Let's get this discussion going! What would be the best Jund commander to tear down the fence and meld the three colors together for the ultimate negative counter deck!?

Here are our options:

Curious as to why Bartel Runeaxe is on the list, as he's Legendary (even though I think he is uncommon).

Almost got it in three hours, I'm only like 20 minutes late.

Assuming a 6 tier system:

To be moved from T5 to T6: (Rationale: french-vanilla, overcosted with no pay-off, or just vitually no effect on the game.)

Akuta, Born of Ash, Anthousa, Setessan Hero, Baron Sengir, Bartel Runeaxe, Boris Devilboon, Cho-Manno, Revolutionary, Arcades Sabboth, Atogatog, Chromium, Circu, Dimir Lobotomist, Cloudhoof Kirin, Commander Greven il-Vec, Crovax the Cursed, Dakkon Blackblade, Daughter of Autumn, Gabriel Angelfire, Gallowbraid, Gosta Dirk, Grandmother Sengir, Haakon, Stromgald Scourge, Halfdane, Hazduhr the Abbot, Hivis of the Scale, Huang Zhong, Shu General, Hunding Gjornersen, Ihsan's Shade, Irini Sengir, Ishi-Ishi, Akki Crackshot, Iwamori of the Open Fist, Jacques le Vert, Kei Takahashi, Kentaro, the Smiling Cat, Lady Caleria, Liu Bei, Lord of Shu, Livonya Silone, Lord Magnus, Ma Chao, Western Warrior, Marhault Elsdragon, Morinfen, Myojin of Cleansing Fire, Myojin of Life's Web, Orim, Samite Healer, Palladia-Mors, Pang Tong, "Young Phoenix", Pavel Maliki, Princess Lucrezia, Purraj of Urborg, Rashida Scalebane, Rashka the Slayer, Reveka, Wizard Savant, Riven Turnbull, Rohgahh of Kher Keep, Shimatsu the Bloodcloaked, Sima Yi, Wei Field Marshal, Soraya the Falconer, Spirit of the Night, Stangg, Taniwha, Tarox Bladewing, Telim'Tor, Tuknir Deathlock, Tuktuk the Explorer, Ur-Drago, Vaevictis Asmadi, Veldrane of Sengir, Xun Yu, Wei Advisor, Yukora, the Prisoner, Zhang Liao, Hero of Hefei, Zhao Zilong, Tiger General, Zhou Yu, Chief Commander, Zuberi, Golden Feather.

(I left out Ramirez DePietro because I just didn't have the heart to be the one to demote him. I mean, come on, he's a pirate. Pirates should get their own tier...)

Moved from T4 to T5: (Rationale: mediocre voltron stats w/ limited defensive or evasion abilities, effects that don't have a strong effect on the game.)

Arashi, the Sky Asunder, Adamaro, First to Desire, Alexi, Zephyr Mage, Atalya, Samite Master, Autumn Willow, Ayumi, the Last Visitor, Balthor the Stout, Bounteous Kirin, Cabal Patriarch, Cao Ren, Wei Commander, Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip, Commander Eesha, Daghatar the Adamant, Diaochan, Artful Beauty, Dong Zhou, the Tyrant, Eron the Relentless, Fumiko the Lowblood, Geist of Saint Traft, Gerrard Capashen, Ghost Council of Orzhova, He Who Hungers, Heidar, Rimewind Master, Higure, the Still Wind, Iizuka the Ruthless, Iname as One, Iname, Life Aspect, Isao, Enlightened Bushi, Infernal Kirin, Jareth, Leonine Titan, Jedit Ojanen of Efrava, Jiwari, the Earth Aflame, Kamahl, Pit Fighter, Karona, False God, Kami of the Crescent Moon, Kaysa, Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs, Kiyomaro, First to Stand, Kiku, Night's Flower, Kodama of the North Tree, Kumano, Master Yamabushi, Korlash, Heir to Blackblade, Kuon, Ogre Ascendant, Lady Evangela, Lady Sun, Latulla, Keldon Overseer, Linessa, Zephyr Mage, Llawan, Cephalid Empress, Lovisa Coldeyes, Masako the Humorless, Masumaro, First to Live, Munda, Ambush Leader, Ob Nixilis, the Fallen, Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens, Oriss, Samite Guardian, Pianna, Nomad Captain, Pharika, God of Affliction, Polukranos, World Eater, Radiant, Archangel, Ragnar, Rakdos the Defiler, Rayne, Academy Chancellor, Rorix Bladewing, Ruhan of the Fomori, Sensei Golden-Tail, Shauku, Endbringer, Shisato, Whispering Hunter, Silvos, Rogue Elemental, Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer, Sosuke, Son of Seshiro, Squee, Goblin Nabob, Starke of Rath, Sun Ce, Young Conquerer, Sunastian Falconer, Tahngarth, Talruum Hero, Tajic, Blade of the Legion, Takeno, Samurai General, Thriss, Nantuko Primus, Tymaret, the Murder King, Vhati il-Dal, Vorosh, the Hunter, Zhang Fei, Fierce Warrior, Zurgo Bellstriker.

Moved from T4 to T6: (Rationale: a combination of the last two. These guys really didn't belong in T4 in the first place.)

Guan Yu, Sainted Warrior, Hakim, Loreweaver, Hikari, Twilight Guardian, Kodama of the Center Tree, Kuro, Pitlord, Kongming, "Sleeping Dragon", Maga, Traitor to Mortals, Mannichi, the Fevered Dream, Meng Huo, Barbarian King, Nagao, Bound by Honor, Obzedat, Ghost Council, Patron of the Nezumi, Patron of the Kitsune, Tivadar of Thorn, Zhang He, Wei General, Zuo Ci, the Mocking Sage.

Moved from T3 to T4: (Rationale: Just basing this off of my experience with the commanders and the synergies available to them. Trying to split into Good Tier and Average Tier. Priorities for Good Tier: commanders that have built in methods of dodging removal and disruption (e.g. Thrun, the Last Troll), and commanders who's strategies quick swing the board out of proportion if left unchecked (e.g. Rakdos, Lord of Riots).)
