Awaken the Blood Avatar

Sorcery

As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may sacrifice any number of creatures. This spell costs less to cast for each creature sacrificed this way.

Each opponent sacrifices a creature. Create a 3/6 black and red Avatar creature token with haste and "Whenever this creature attacks, it deals 3 damage to each opponent."

I think Red/Black is a great core to have as a component of "evilness". The third color gives you different flavors of villainy.

  • Malik, Grim Manipulator - Especially if the Universes Beyond version isn't your cup of tea.

  • Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip/Awaken the Blood Avatar  Flip - For a different flavor of Evil Wizard that isn't Grixis.

  • Anhelo, the Painter / Lord Xander, the Collector - If you want a different flavor of Grixis beyond "Evil Wizard". From having played Anhelo, he's a weird mix of spellslinger and Aristocrats that kinda pushes and pulls between the archetypes.

  • Henzie "Toolbox" Torre - Henzie is more amoral than evil in lore. From consistently playing against my best friend's Henzie deck, this is definitely a commander that can consistently become the arch enemy of games. Highly recommend him for how explosive he can be.

  • Laughing Jasper Flint - Play a bunch of Outlaws and twirl your imaginary mustache. Olivia, Opulent Outlaw adds white and all the support and excellent removal options from it.

  • Prosper, Tome-Boundfoil - Prosper seems more like an amoral Warlock, than actually evil. Regardless, Prosper has quite a reputation, and can turn into an archenemy at tables. I used to play him, and didn't expect him to get nearly as much Treasure and Impulse/Exile play support as he did since his debut. He could also be a value piece in Jasper Flint or Olivia, since Warlocks are Outlaws.

  • Jon Irenicus, Shattered One - Another different flavor of Evil Wizard. Can be a fun kind of evil depending on the creatures you donate to your opponents.

Just a handful of options I can think of off the top of my head.

Absolutely love it. +1 for the name alone, but solid build all around. If I could give +2 for your choice of basic lands I would. You've definitely inspired me to try and build my own version of Awaken the Blood Avatar .

Quick question though... do you rely mostly on sacrificing your tokens in order to reduce the casting cost of Awaken the Blood Avatar , or do you sac your regular creatures as well? I'm curious because I thought cards with afterlife might be good here. Doomed Traveler / Garrison Cat / Hunted Witness and Ministrant of Obligation just to name a few (there are many, many more in these colors. Theses would all pair really well with two cards you're already running Anointed Procession / Teysa Karlov .

Regardless of whether or not you decide to use those you could add Agadeem's Awakening  Flip / Rally the Ancestors or Wake the Dead for some pretty explosive turns. Luminous Broodmoth would be really good here as well.

Just letting you know that Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip / Awaken the Blood Avatar has no associated Avatar token in the simulator currently, nor does Sedgemoor Witch or Callous Bloodmage have 1/1 pests when in the simulator.

Thanks!

Always good to hear from a fellow hivemate Doombeard1984, by the way your customized username is very cool. I find myself wanting to give my plain looking user name the same treatment - but i'm too lazy to re-learn how to do it. As for my decision making process behind choosing Painlands over others, the constant life loss is a relatively minor concern - the aim of this deck is to threaten to win between turns 5 and 8 (or sooner, ideally). It doesn't matter what my life total is at the end of a game, as long as I win.

Separately, I think the Battlebond lands are an absolutely awesome card design. However, I don't want to include them because I don't like the idea of a land that ETBs tapped 100% of the time during a 1 v 1 game.

As for Strixhaven, nothing for Slivers piqued my interest. However, I do like Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip/ Awaken the Blood Avatar . I think it's a very unique and cool concept for a commander. I don't think i'll invest any money in building a paper copy of an Extus deck as I don't really play Magic in person anymore. I play exclusively on Cockatrice with friends as that's the only real safe way to play. Plus, I get to try out a whole myriad of different commander decks for free. If you want to get a game in feel free to add me, I have the same name on Cockatrice as I do on here.

I like how, with some of the new cards like Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip, they are not a dead draw because of legendary when you already have one in play.

In particular with Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip it's even a really good synergy with its backside. Awaken the Blood Avatar lets you sacrifice creatures to reduce it's casting cost and Extus will put them back into your hand.
