Showdown #36: It's in the Stars

Apologies for the very late uploading of this article -- there was a bug on the site disallowing anyone to do so.

Hello all and welcome back to Showdown, where me and Kaveth pit our own Standard builds against standard builds sent into us by you all, the members of Tappedout. Game Day is approaching us! ARe you all as excited as I am for it? I'm still trying to figure out what I'll be playing, but I'm pretty sold on Abzan Midrange/Control. Here's hoping I can help bring Whisperwood Elemental into the limelight by taking the tournament!

Last week I piloted a version of the Abzan list I want to run against Kaveth and the BW Aggro list he chose to run....and unfortunately it was a blowout in his favor. This week, it's my turn to choose a community list. And I'm looking to take my title back! This week will be a matchup between Kaveth and his Robots list versus me piloting TheHroth's BG Constellation Ramp deck. Let's get to the techs.

Deck Tech With Spootyone

This week I'll be piloting a deck archetype that has already proven itself in the current metagame. Notable people who have been piloting this deck with success are Brian Braun-Duin, Brad Nelson, Todd Anderson, and Chris VanMeter. That deck is GB Constellation, or if you prefer, GB Devotion.

The premise of this deck is two-fold. The first and more obvious one is the Constellation shell. Much like previous versions of the deck, courser, Eidolon of Blossoms, and Doomwake Giant form a triumvirate that is hard for many decks to overcome simply due to card advantage, decent bodies, and sweeping power. This is an archetype that goes well along with the second main aspect of the deck, which is that surrounding Frontier Siege.

Frontier Siege has been one of the premium cards to join us from Fate Reforged. While ramp strategies typically have a glaring weakness of not drawing the right things at the right time and losing out to decks that can out-card-advantage them, we were also given the beauty that is Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. Ugin allows a deck such as this to ramp quickly into a permanent that can choose to wrath the board and remain afterwards as an absurdly powerful threat. Along with this, Frontier siege allows a nice interaction with Hornet Queen, since you can name Dragons and have your queen and her horde fight things and kill them as they enter.

Overall, I already understand that this deck is powerful. What I want to know is whether or not it can be consistent enough to warrant playing. If I cannot manage to pull the mana dorks early or cannot find one of my main threats, I could find myself in a bad position facing down Ensoul Artifact and Scuttling Doom Engine.

4x Courser of Kruphix 4x Doomwake Giant 4x Eidolon of Blossoms 4x Elvish Mystic 7x Forest 4x Frontier Siege 3x Hero's Downfall 3x Hornet Queen 3x Jungle Hollow 4x Llanowar Wastes 1x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx 3x Swamp 4x Sylvan Caryatid 4x Temple of Malady 3x Thoughtseize 3x Ugin, the Spirit Dragon 1x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth 1x Whip of Erebos Sideboard: 3x Bile Blight 2x Garruk, Apex Predator 1x Hero's Downfall 1x Hornet Queen 3x Nissa, Worldwaker 3x Read the Bones 1x Thoughtseize 1x Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

Deck Tech With Kaveth

The deck I chose today was one that piqued my interest back when I saw it back in September of last year. It is a list that was run by Takahashi Naoya, taking 1st at the Garden City Convention in Japan. I did take a liberty and changed the sideboard to include Disdainful Stroke over the original list’s Gainsay mostly due to the heavy focus of 4 CMC threats in my meta. I am in the process of picking apart the deck to find injection points for Fate Reforged cards. I am at a standstill of replacing Singing Bell Strike with Reality Shift but I like the possibility of double duty with Singing Bell Strike. It can act as tempo “removal” or turn on Daring Thief’s ability by giving him “(6): Untap this creature.” What do you guys think this deck could take from Fate Reforged?

MTGTop8 link if you are interested: http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=8230&d=247371&f=ST

Effectively what the deck is trying to do is convoke out high value artifacts such as Scuttling Doom Engine, Soul of New Phyrexia and Bident of Thassa while keeping pressure on with Ensoul Artifact and Ghostfire Blade. Convoking also has the benefit of safely turning on Daring Thief for some fun blue shenanigans.

As for the matchup, I think my deck will put up a good showing here. I have some good targets for theft, Scuttling Doom Engine attacks straight through Hornet Queen and most of his deck. I am hopeful that with a slight bit of disruption of his deck’s mega ramp strategy, perhaps a Singing Bell Strike on an Elvish Mystic, his strategy will fall apart.

Biggest fears include: Frontier Siege honestly, this card seems like a total power house that enables him to quickly establish a board state.

12x island 4x darksteel citadel 3x tomb of the spirit dragon 1x nykthos, shrine to nyx 4x ornithopter 4x daring thief 4x chief engineer 4x phyrexian revoker 3x scuttling doom engine 3x hypnotic siren 1x soul of new phyrexia 4x springleaf drum 4x ghostfire blade 4x ensoul artifact 3x singing bell strike 2x bident of thassa sideboard: 1x singing bell strike 3x tormod's crypt 3x staff of the mind magus 1x dissolve 2x negate 2x triton tactics 2x disdainful stroke 1x aetherspouts

Game 1

Spootyone wins the die roll and is on the play.

I keep an opening hand of 2x forest, Elvish Mystic, Sylvan Caryatid, Temple of Malady, Frontier Siege, and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. I have a solid curve going and I really just cannot complain here.

Kaveth is on the draw. Lost the die roll and drew into Darksteel Citadel Island Tomb of the Spirit Dragon (hear that Ugin, you gonna die!) Phyrexian Revoker, Ensoul Artifact, Hypnotic Siren and a Daring Thief. Seems like it is doing what my deck wants to do. Keep.

S1: Draw: None

I lead with my scryland and keep Eidolon of Blossoms on top.

K1: Draw: Ghostfire Blade

Lead with the Darksteel Citadel into Ghostfire Blade. Phyrexian Revoker next turn to turn off any mana dork I see, into a fun turn 3.

S2: Draw: Eidolon of Blossoms

I play a forest and my Sylvan Caryatid before passing. Gonna hopefully get the siege out there next turn unless it seems otherwise like a bad decision.

K2: Draw: Tomb of the Spirit Dragon

Drew into Tomb of the Spirit Dragon number 2. Played it and the Phyrexian Revoker as planned, naming Sylvan Caryatid. Pass.

S3: Draw: Doomwake Giant

With me being unable to use my caryatid for mana any longer, I'll need to just play slower, I guess. I play a forest and my Elvish Mystic and I then have to pass.

K3: Draw: Springleaf Drum

I think I will take 1 more setup turn before going all out. I played the Springleaf Drum and tapped Phyrexian Revoker for blue to play the Daring Thief and passed.

S4: Draw: Frontier Siege

Hmm...Okay so no land drop for this turn unless I play the Eidolon and get lucky on the draw. Even if I play the siege this turn, I will only have a max of 7 mana next turn. I think for that reason, I'll play the eidolon here. I do so and draw an elvish mystic. Pass.

K4: Draw: Singing Bell Strike

I notice the missing land drop so I think using it on the Mystic is important here. Striked the Mystic, equipped Ghostfire Blade to the Phyrexian Revoker and swung in for 4. Tapped Daring Thief with the drum to put out a Hypnotic Siren with plans to steal the Eidolon of Blossoms, ensoul my Darksteel Citadel and draw me a card.

16/20

S5: Draw: Llanowar Wastes

I'm so glad we drew that here. I'm in a strange position where I'm actually being mana screwed...sort of...by his choices. I still can't play doomwake this turn, but I like casting siege here. I do so and name Khans, then draw another doomwake from it. I attack for two with my eidolon. I then add two mana to my pool second main and play the elvish mystic.

16/18

K5: Draw: Daring Thief

Untapped and used Daring Thief to trade my Hypnotic Siren for his Frontier Siege. Drew an Island. Play seems relatively simple here. Floated 2 G from the siege, played an Island. Tapped it and used 1 floating green to play Ensoul targeting my Citadel. Swinging in for 11. Second main, I take the 2 floating green from his siege and use it to gain 2 life from my Tomb of the Spirit Dragon. Pass.

12/20

S6: Draw: Thoughtseize

Alright that draw was pretty bad. Things aren't looking so hot for me right now. I cast Doomwake Giant and draw into a forest, which I then play. I don't have any attacks I want to make and Daring Thief is really doing some work here. Pass.

K6: Draw: Ornithopter

Untapped and traded my Ensoul Artifact for his Doomwake Giant, note that my land is still ensouled but he now controls the enchantment. Drew into Ornithopter. Dropped it and used the 2 floating green from Frontier Siege to gain 3 life. I play my last Tomb of the Spirit Dragon and move to combat and swing with everything for 15. Second main I use Frontier Siege to gain 3 more life using tomb number 2.

1/26

S7: Draw: Llanowar Wastes

Well I would have to say there's just no way out of this now. This draw means nothing to me and he can just equip the blade to his Ornithopter to win next turn. I concede.

Kaveth Wins Game 1

Sideboarding with Spootyone

Out: 1x Whip of Erebos, 1x Hero's Downfall, 3x Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

In: 1x Hornet Queen, 1x Thoughtseize, 3x Bile Blight

That was...interesting. I was disrupted early on by the Phyrexian Revoker and then the Daring Thief sort of ran away with the game by giving me bad stuff in exchange for the things I needed. It's clear I need more disruption for his game plan.

I'm going to be bringing in all three copies of Bile Blight as ways to kill his thieves and revokers. I'm also bringing in the 4th Thoughtseize so that I can take out key "combo" pieces from his hand. I'm also takin gout all copies of Ugin since his -X hits hardly anything in my opponent's deck.

I'm bringing in my 4th copy of Hornet Queen since I removed a number of "win-cons". I'm also taking out a single Hero's Downfall since I have plenty removal now and the single Whip of Erebos because it doesn't seem highly impactful in this matchup and I'd rather be playing more creatures than not.

Sideboarding with Kaveth

Out: 4x Ghostfire Blade, 2x Bident of Thassa

In: 2x Negate, 2x Disdainful Stroke, 2x Triton Tactics

I don’t know that much of my deck is bad against his list, Worst card in the matchup has to be Ghostfire Blade by far and second worst card is probably the Bident of Thassa. I believe the approach here is to take out 4x Ghostfire Blade and 2x Bident of Thassa for 2x Negate, 2x Disdainful Stroke and 2x Triton Tactics to prepare for any Bile Blights I may encounter.

Game 2

Spootyone is on the play. My opening hand has 5 lands, caryatid, queen. I don't think 5 lands is where I want to be. I keep a six card hand of forest, swamp, Elvish Mystic, Sylvan Caryatid, Courser of Kruphix and Eidolon of Blossoms. This one has a lot more going for it.

Kaveth is on the draw with opening hand of Ornithopter and a Springleaf Drum, 2 Tomb of the Spirit Dragon an Island and 2x Ensoul Artifact. No reason not to keep. If I draw into a 1 drop this hand is nearly the best the deck can offer.

S1: Draw: none

I play the forest and elvish mystic and pass.

K1: Draw: Darksteel Citadel

Drew Darksteel Citadel, not terrible but not a 1 drop. Played the Citadel into Springleaf Drum, dropped an Ornithopter and passed.

S2: Draw: Swamp

Not bad. I potentially have an ensoul arifact coming up here and I unfortunately don't have a way to deal with that. I play a swamp and then my courser, revealing Frontier Siege and passing.

K2: Draw: Scuttling Doom Engine

Should be a nice one later, but for now I see that he is 1 untapped land away from a Hero's Downfall, perhaps I bait it with my Ornithopter so he takes 1 more turn to play his Frontier Siege he will be drawing. I play an Ensoul Artifact on my Darksteel Citadel and swing in for 5. If he does tap out for the Frontier Siege next turn, I will be swinging in for 10 with both the Ornithopter and my Citadel.

15/20

S3: Draw: Frontier Siege

I reveal another caryatid from my deck. Hmm...well this isn't a good spot to be in. This deck has very little in the way of dealing with an ensouled citadel. I basically can only block with Doomwake Giant, and I don't even have him. I play the swamp, play the siege naming khans, attack for 2 with my courser, and then play a caryatid second main phase with the added mana. Pass.

16/18

K3: Draw: Island

The play was already foretold. Island into Ensoul Artifact on the thopter. Swing 10. Pass. At his end step I pay 2 to gain 2 life off of my Tomb of the Spirit Dragon.

11/18

S4: Draw: Sylvan Caryatid

I reveal Thoughtseize from the top. Not great here. I add mana to my pool and play Eidolon of Blossoms and draw the Thoughtseize. This reveals a second Thoughtseize. Fack. I go to my second main phase and play the caryatid and pass. He pays 2 to gain 2 life off of his Tomb of the Spirit Dragon.

K4: Draw: Soul of New Phyrexia

Drew into Soul of New Phyrexia, another card I can’t quite play yet. I play Tomb of the Spirit Dragon, Swing for 10 and pass.

6/18

S5: Draw: Thoughtseize

I reveal a Llanowar Wastes from the top. I play it and gain a life. This reveals a Frontier Siege. Pass.

7/18

K5: Draw: Tomb of the Spirit Dragon

Seeing his Frontier Siege on top, I tap out and play Scuttling Doom Engine. Tapping my Ensouled Darksteel Citadel and my Ensouled Ornithopter with Springleaf Drum.

S6: Draw: Frontier Siege

I have no way to win here. I concede.

Kaveth Wins the Match!

Afterthoughts

Spooty: Two weeks in a row of me having my ass handed to me does not sit well with me, but it's even worse when you go into a match afraid you may stomp your opponent too hard to make it a good match. I actually asked Kaveth if I should even play this deck because we were both afraid I might end up winning too quickly and it wouldn't be a good read.

Boy, were we wrong.

I don't think there's much negative to say about the Constellation build. I think that it is built very well and that it can be very powerful. Of course, there is going to be the issue of consistency with decks like this that rely on ramp to win (for the most part). And I think that the consistency problem was witnessed in this matchup slightly.

Overall, however, I think this was a bit of a stroke of bad luck. Having so few ways to react to his early Ensoul Artifacts was the deck's true downfall here. And the stream of Thoughtseize after not having it early enough to stop it in Game 2 was just brutal (and might I add a little unnecessary, UNIVERSE!!). This isn't a fault of the deck in the current standard metagame, though. And we did play a game 3 off-camera, so to speak, where I ended up winning after getting the engine going. So, in general, I'd say this deck should do fine, but that a rouge deck such as my opponent's may take it off-guard.

Kaveth: Afterthoughts.. that was a complete stomping that I didn’t expect. The deck I was running seemed to do everything that it wanted to do when it needed to. I can’t help but feel that it was luck oriented but with that being said only more testing can tell.

FUTURE NEWS

I have some things I need to share with you all, so let's go ahead and get these out of the way.

First off, Kaveth has decided that he no longer can do these articles with me after this one. While this does mean a change to my articles in the future, my hope is that the changes will not be too vast. I have recruited another Tappedout member to help me with these articles in the future, and I know this will turn out just fine for things to come. That said, it's going to be a little bit before the next article comes out.

I have decided that I'm going to take a small break from the competitive MTG scene. After numerous failed attempts at tournament victories, a great many hours spent brewing and playtesting, and more money than I should be spending, I have come out the other end with not even a single FNM 1st place prize. And while I understand the plentiful reasons why this could be the case, it does grow tiresome. In order to preserve my love of this game (as well as my own sanity), I will be taking a few weeks off to clear my mind and focus on other things.

Now, don't worry. There will still be more content from me in the future. I still have plenty of ideas and you all still have many decks for me to test. And if you see me online and want to play a round of EDH, I'm all yours. And with that said, I will speak to you all in the next edition of Showdown.

-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Until next time, may you never get mana-screwed. And as always, thanks for reading!

--Spootyone--

Feeling generous? Wanna help out? It's easy! Donating even a small amount really helps make these happen, and I will always be appreciative of it. Plus, you can get rewards for doing so!

-~-~-~-~-~-~-

- $5.00 = You will receive a personal thank you and mention in the next article I release!

- $10.00 = I will do an in-depth analysis of the deck of your choice, giving my advice and opinions in detail (Note: this will need to be limited to Standard and EDH for the time being as I grow my skills and knowledge in other formats). Additionally, you will receive the mention in the next article!

- $25.00 = In addition to the deck analysis, I will run a 5-game playtesting match between your chosen deck and any other of your choice, be it your own, a pillar of the format, or even one of my own creations! Afterwards, I will provide you with a detailed synopsis of how things went, and give my opinions and suggestions about the chosen deck. This will be in addition to the notation in the next article.

- $50.00 = If you are generous enough to donate 50 or more dollars, you and I will set up a meeting via Skype, Google Hangouts, etc. to discuss archetypes, cards, formats, or anything even remotely MTG-related. Afterwards, we will meet up on Cockatrice to have our very own Speedbrew where you can challenge me to anything you'd like! (This will be purely for fun -- not an actual episode of Speedbrewers). Due to time restraints, I'll have to keep this portion to ~ 2 hours long. In addition to all this, you will still receive the 5-game playtesting match of your choice, in-depth deck analysis, and mention in the next article I send out!

~~~ IMPORTANT ~~~
I need to emphasize the criteria for deck submissions, as it's going to help us choose in the future. Please, if you submit a deck, pay attention to these when choosing.
1.) The deck must be Standard-legal. We are not versed in Modern right now and it would be wrong of us to pilot a Modern deck and claim to know what we were doing.
2.) The deck must have a 15-card sideboard. In an effort to remain fair, both decks need to have the ability to sideboard -- even if it's poor. Please make sure the deck has a sideboard. If you have unique SB choices or choices in general that would not be easy to comprehend, please explain them so we can know what we're doing with your deck.
3.) Do whatever you can not to limit your creativity and skill. This means don't allow cost to become an issue. If you don't own the cards IRL, it's fine. Having less good cards in the deck means bias during the match when the card is only there for monetary reasons. NOTE: If you create a Budget deck for the purposes of it being so, that is different and is fine. But please note the distinct differences between budget-building and (for example) only having one copy of Thoughtseize or Siege Rhino because that's all you currently own.
Apart from these stipulations, go nuts in deck building! But please, make sure these rules are followed when submitting so that we don't have to shoot down a perfectly fine deck just because it has a 3-card SB or because it's playing Aven Skirmisher as a proxy for Wingmate Roc.
Thank you and enjoy!
Ever-growing Horde. SB explanation: I occasionally see a lifegain deck running around so I have 2x Erebos, God of the Dead in there to shut them down. Circle of Flame and Drown in Sorrow both help against the mirror match up and Boss Sligh. Despise over Thoughtsieze because I don't want to lose life, and if it comes down to it we always have Mardu Charm for other nastys. I made this over jeskai tokens because Brutal Hordechief and Sorin, Solemn Visitor were too much to resist.
I am not quite sure how you were working out the life totals, but both games had glaring errors that made reading it very hard work...
eg, Game 1, in turn K5 life totals at 16/18, K swings for 11, gains 2 and life goes to 12/20, then next turn K swings for 15 and S goes down to 1?
Game 2, in turn K3, life totals at 16/18, K swings for 10 and life goes to 11/18, then in next turn, K swings for another 10 and life goes to 6/18.
Would not have changes results, bur games would have ended quicker.
Hey, enjoyed the article. I do have a question regarding game one though. Why did you lead with the scry land when you had access to elvish mystic and a basic forest? Isn't just starting with the mystic better? You can still turn two caryatid, turn two forest, turn three siege, and then scry into what is hopefully a land then, for a turn four ugin.
I realize that Ugin isn't great against his deck, and that the revoker would have stalled this, but with the cards in your hand, I would think that would have been the plan.
EddCrawley: it seems as though Kaveth forgot to mention any of my blocks for the game. Thats why the numbers seem off. Ill keep an eye out for that in the future when editing. Thank you.
kyuuri117: Its been a while since this game so its a bit of a blur to me, but I think my reasoning was that I could set up my draw better early game (scry), still cast the siege on T3, and then cast the mystic main 2 after playing the siege. Of course, had I recognized how brutal him turning off my mana dorks was I may have done otherwise.
I can understand getting burned out and needing a break for a bit, especially if you've been on a losing streak. Hope you can get the needed mental R&R!
As for submissions....You could always take a spin with a deck that stomped you in the past. Wouldn't that be a nice change of pace? I know you've done your own Abzan midrange, but I feel like this might get you better results, even in a mirror match.
Note: This deck has not been updated for FRF... but I still expect it to be decent.
The sideboard is currently a work in progress as there has been an absolute upsurge in hyper aggro decks like boss slight and B/W warriors in my local meta, but in tournament setting it should be good to go.
