Suspended for the remainder of the draft; E is afk for the rest of the day and noted that we probably didn't need her comments on trash picks anyway.

That's what I figured. No one is Gruul or Simic.

Do we dare take the Guildgate and play it over a forest? Or do we hate the Gatekeeper? The Gatekeeper doesn't really hurt us.

+1 Species Gorger

I think we take the Species Gorger , in case someone has the rigth colour splash. A 6/6 would be tricky to beat, and return to hand means they can make our stab wounds fall off.

+1 Simic Guildgate won't help us but better than letting others mana fix.

Our deck is looking something like this at the moment DGM draft deck may27. Don't think we can fit a 3rd unflinching courage in.

+1 Simic Guildgate

I don't think we need to hate the Gorger, personally. I wouldn't mind putting the gate in place of a forest to make our Gate-dependent creatures more reliable. We only have 3 gates right now.

MagnorCriol says... #6

There's logic to that. There's reasonable argument for the gate, too, though - we do actually have a fair number of dudes that care about gates. Maybe it'd be worth running a half-off-color gate to facilitate them even more? Plus, denying fixing to the next couple of people, though likely this isn't fixing for them or it'd be gone already.

May 27, 2013 4:11 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #7

Actually, nevermind. I thought we'd picked up an extra Gatekeepers somewhere but we've only got 3 things that care about gates.

+1 Species Gorger

It really doesn't matter much at this point anyhow.

I guess we take the gate, although Gorger could really come back to bite us in the ass.

+1 Simic Guildgate

May 27, 2013 4:15 p.m.

Does anyone believe the guy immediately downstream from us is playing Simic? This pack is only going to see two more players. Let them hate the frog beast.

Oh, wait... It's a frog beast. A FROG BEAST!!! I love me some frog beast!

+1 Species Gorger

If someone has the right color splash, that could be a scary creature.

May 27, 2013 4:20 p.m.

sewellius says... #11

On that same note, if nobody is playing Simic, then they aren't gonna use a Species Gorger , either. I still say having better insurance for our Gate guys is worth picking up a slow Forest.

sewellius says... #12

Well, I think I misunderstood the tone of SupremeAlliesCommander's comment, on first look. Now that I'm looking back it appears I'm agreeing with you to let someone else hate the Gorger.

Also, wheeling this much just makes me believe even more that nobody is ever going to mainboard it.

May 27, 2013 4:25 p.m.

Simic Guildgate is a strictly worse forest, just fyi. And I'd rather someone have the gate than have the gorger, for the problems with our enchantments.

May 27, 2013 4:26 p.m.

sewellius says... #14

I've already mentioned the Gate is a slow forest. The point is, are we comfortable depending on only three Gates to enable some of our guys, one of which requires two gates?

The only point I see otherwise, would be if we believe someone will actually use the Gorger.

Are we missing any other arguments?

May 27, 2013 4:30 p.m.

Are we comfortable slowing a land down for ONLY that benefit? Remember, those benefits are icing on the creature, not the whole reason we drafted them. As such, it makes little sense that we might end up a turn behind on mana when we really need it, just for some marginal abilities on our 2/4 creatures.

May 27, 2013 4:34 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #16

It's really just a question of whether slightly increased reliability at turning on our three gates-matter dudes is worth a slow land. I'm not sure of that answer, but my gut tells me only three creatures isn't really enough to make it worth the chance of a slower start, however low that chance might be.

Whether or not Species Gorger is getting played by someone is very likely irrelevant. Gorger is the sort of guy that decks that want him will snap him up fast, and everyone else will avoid him; I think the fact that he's here means there's not really a dedicated Simic deck at the table. I've been very wrong in my assessments about what's going to get passed and played so far this draft, though, so eh.

May 27, 2013 4:35 p.m.

On the subject of someone using the gorger, all someone needs is to be in blue or green and splashing the other colour, and they will side Species Gorger in against us, making Stab Wound and One Thousand Lashes a lot less valuable.

May 27, 2013 4:36 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #18

Another very good point.

+1 Simic Guildgate

in case we decide to use as the slow forest as mentioned above. Personally I would use it, as I don't think we will be able to play tight to the curve anyways

+1 Species Gorger.
It's the better hate draft

May 27, 2013 4:59 p.m.

sewellius says... #21

As it has been rehashed now, this is all the same argument. Do we believe someone will use it against us? (Someone, meaning one of the next two people drafting behind us)

If you believe they will, then I understand why you want to snatch it up.

On the other hand, if you don't believe one of the next two drafters will use it, then the next thing is to consider the slow Forest for slightly higher chances of getting our bonus effects.

At this time, I support the latter thought.

+1 Hate-draft Species Gorger

three crappy cards with Blue in their casting cost.... Says a lot about the way Blue or Simic is feeling in this draft IMO...

May 27, 2013 5:08 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #23

Gorger is not a crappy card. It's just narrow. It's very strong, actually, but only its niche. a 6/6 for 5 that lets you repeatedly grow your other creatures or get value from an EtB effect (and blue has some really strong ones in this block) is quite good.

Close enough. Moving on.

+1 Simic Guildgate

Even though it's essentially a forest that comes into play tapped there's a chance that we might even run it if we decide it's worth it with our gatekeeper.

Even if we don't it's statistically the better hate pick since not only does someone have to be playing Simic colors to use the Species Gorger they have to be within 2 spots to the left of us (realistically one, since I imagine that the next person to get the pack would hate pick it over the water gatekeeper if they can't use either).
