Amonkhet

Mortlocke, 8 years ago

After looking at the spoilers list for Amonkhet I can honestly say that there are aren't any new cards I would incorporate into this deck. What kinds of cards am I looking for? Cards that enable combos. Aether Revolt brought me Paradox Engine - a better Intruder Alarm in my opinion. I've yet to see anything as useful in Amonkhet thus far. Besides looking for combo enablers, I'm simply biding my time until more Slivers are released...hopefully we will return to Dominara after this cycle.

But as for actual inclusions, I'm flirting with the idea of acquiring maybe one or two of the new invocations in Amonkhet. The art style of the invocations are a bit gaudy for my taste so i'll have to see how the cards look in person. So far i'd like to see:

  • Invocation - Vindicate - This doesn't look half bad, but i'm not sure if I want to trade in my sweet Apocalypse Vindicate though. But it isn't foil...

  • Invocation - Counterspell - i've always been a fan of Counterspell, and surely wouldn't mind getting my hands on this for the right price.

  • Invocation - Force of Will - I used to run this spell, but then I traded it up for a Mana Drain. I don't know if I would include this in the deck though, what should I swap out if I were to include FoW again?

  • Invocation - Pact of Negation - of all the previously mentioned, I'd be most willing to go after an invocation instance of this card because I only have a Modern Masters 2016 instance of the spell...and it's not shiny. I'll likely just trade up for it.

Oh, and thanks to user:Delta-117 for bringing the invocations to my attention.

Modern FNM (8th place)

OutOfBasics, 8 years ago

First run with this deck! Ended up 8th place out of 26 players somehow (far better than I thought I would do).

Round 1: 0-2 vs. Infect.

I KNOW that I can beat infect, especially after sideboarding. I have an excessive amount of removal and burn for their creatures. Unfortunately, I lost game 2 due to fetching the wrong land.

Round 2: 2-0 vs. U/W enchantments, Zur's Weriding.

OK, so I can definitely win the long game. These were interesting games, I think I won mostly through drawing more action than my opponent.

Round 3: 0-2 vs. U/B control.

These were an embarrassing two games. Game 1, the opponent resolved two Ancestral Visions, while I flooded slightly. Game 2, he resolved two Visions, while I drew 16 of the 24 lands in my deck.

Round 4: 2-0 vs. Lantern Control

It turns out that I don't care if a card is milled off the top of my deck.

Round 5: 2-0 vs. Lantern Control

Game 1 was straightforward enough. Game 2, I won through a Rest in Peace and Ensnaring Bridge. He tried to mill a key card, and in response I sacrificed Tireless Tracker's clues more times than he could respond by milling me. That was fun!

I've learned that I need a more precise mana base, more enchantment removal, and that Explore just doesn't work very well. =(

Changed up some flex slots just for testing. Firestorm is my usual wincon, but since the entire spell fizzles if one of its targets is removed, I decided to switch to the much more reliable aetherflux reservoir. Goblin-Dark Dwellers and Siege-Gang Commander were replaced for lower cmc cards.

Updates after a month playing this deck !

Jojonathan, 8 years ago

After a lot of games with this game, I've come to some changes :

  • Electrolyze and Izzet Charm are out this deck for now. Might be bad luck, but 75% of the time they end up killing a Miracle. At least, See Beyond can send a dead miracle back in the deck.

  • Blind Obedience I have most problems Turn 1 to 3 against stupid Aggro Deck. Blind Obedience kills Haste, kill some artifacts and have some nice values as turn goes on.

  • Most of the times, Blind Obedience is a very safe pick just for his exort mechanics. ( DID I TALK ABOUT THAT SICK SYNERGIE WITH Gideon Jura ??? ) Don't use exort with Miracles !!!

  • Mizzium Mortars once again, it's an aggro killer. 2 Mana, 4 damages AND Overload for Board Clears. Awesome I might say.

  • Mystic Monastery thanks to xXImpetuSXx 's advices !! It'is a must of course !!

  • Gideon Jura for his all-around awesomeness. he kills fatties, he takes damages for you and he even swings 6 damages for you. G R E A T.

As expected, this decks is one of the funniest Deck I've ever played / encountered. Miracles Cards are soooOOOOOoo F U N . And it's a blast casting a 10 Mana Miracle Entreat the Angels and summoning 8 angels to wreck your opponents.

As always, suggestions are welcomed guys !!

Record: 2-2

Mostly, I only seem to be able to win this week against decks that were untested. I was unable to overcome things like Fatal Push and Grasp of Darkness and I really miss protection spells like Gods Willing... I've added an extra Heroic Intervention to the sideboard but it still doesn't seem to help. Adding blue for Turn Aside and perhaps Tamiyo, Field Researcher is a possibility but I'm not sure how much more I want to spend on this deck before Amonkhet comes out...

A CHANGE IN DIRECTION

Radiophage, 8 years ago

Thank you for joining Gwafa on this, a day of... promise.

Over the last few years, the list has focused quite a lot on global card draw, and Gwafa has noticed that despite his best efforts, this has a distressing way of empowering the player sitting to Gwafa's left, or dragging out games longer than the Godfather finds entertaining.

As a result, Gwafa will be experimenting with a shift in his strategies. You'll notice the following changes right away:

Font of Mythos --> Well of Knowledge
Kami of the Crescent Moon --> Cryptoplasm
Well of Ideas --> Braids, Conjurer Adept
Psychosis Crawler --> Psychic Surgery
Ensoul Artifact --> Sailmonger
Overtaker --> Excavation

These changes reduce Gwafa's investments in global card draw, and make his available choices more... liquid, better able to cut deals and shape the game to his advantage. Sailmonger and Excavation in particular look promising, with Psychic Surgery... well, hopefully unnecessary.

That concludes our business for now. Thank you, again, for the pleasure of your company. We have some excellent vintages available -- would you prefer the Jhessian zinfandel, or the Valeron merlot... ?

Finally got my foily Mox Opal!

Modern Competitive League #2 (4-1)

olag, 8 years ago

I ran the decklist with the changes shown in the previous update. I did not record this time.

Round One: Eldrazi-Tron (2-1)
Game 1 I was able to T2 Spreading Seas into T3 Saheeli Rai into T4 combo. They have very little interaction game 1, but it is definitely hand-dependent. I was also on the play, which helps. Game 2 they didn't assemble Tron due to Spreading Seas, but they had a Pithing Needle naming Saheeli Rai from pretty early on, forcing me to grind instead of combo and a Chalice of the Void on 1 kept me from removing their big threats with Path to Exile and I ended up losing the topdeck game/grind. Game 3 my hand was slow, but so was opponent's. I kept a hand with the combo assembled, but only 3 lands. T3 I slam Saheeli Rai and scry a land to the top, they go T3 Thought-Knot Seer revealing 3 Felidar Guardian. They proceed to curse me out and concede.

Round Two: Affinity (0-2)
Game 1 my opponent had a T1 Arcbound Ravager on the play. Only removal in hand I had was a Lightning Bolt and I didn't have enough time to assemble the combo as my opponent beat me down. Game 2 I had to mull to 5 due to flood in 7-card hand and 0 land in 6-card hand. I kept a hand with 1 land and Stony Silence and never saw the 2nd land until T4.

Round Three: Death's Shadow Abzan (2-1)
Game 1 I don't remember much aside from getting my hand picked apart and getting beat down by Tarmogoyf, although I kept a rather slow hand that didn't have much interaction besides a Remand and a Spreading Seas. Game 2 was very grindy, but I was able to draw Relic of Progenitus the turn after my opponent Inquisition of Kozilek'd me, and then proceeded to grind the game out. Jace, Architect of Thought held back 8 Lingering Souls tokens for about 6 turns until I decided to ultimate, getting a Supreme Verdict from my deck and a Liliana of the Veil from my opponent's deck, and then they conceded. Game 3 my opener was incredibly redundant (combination of Wall of Omens, Serum Visions, and lands). My opponent led with 3 hand disruption spells the first few turns, but I was able to land a Saheeli Rai into a Jace, Architect of Thought while keeping up Path to Exile, and then exiled my opponent's GY with Relic of Progenitus. Opponent conceded early, but they had 1-2 cards in hand at the time and no board.

Round Four: Death's Shadow Jund (2-0)
Game 1 I was able to remove all of their threats (including a Liliana, the Last Hope) and combo'd out. Game 2 I was able to remove all of their threats and beat them down with a Celestial Colonnade the last few turns. Relic of Progenitus, once again, was a lifesaver.

Round Five: Kiki-Chord (2-1)
Game 1 was a very grindy affair, including an odd mainboard card from my opponent in the form of Fiery Justice along with Nahiri, the Harbinger (a little less odd). I disrupted my opponent's Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker combo late in the game after fighting over a Nahiri, the Harbinger constantly hovering around 6-8 counters and then combo'd off when my opponent had no interaction. Game 2 my opponent had a pretty good start, including a Sin Collector to take away some of my interaction along with a Fiery Justice to answer my Saheeli Rai. I ended up drawing poorly and my opponent ran over me with Restoration Angel and Eternal Witness. Game 3 was also a grindy affair once more, but from what I recall, I was able to combo off pretty quick around T7 with EOT Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir protection.

Overall record: 4-1
Thoughts: Deck performed better than I expected and there will always be some variance in historically good matchups (Affinity). If the deck performs that well for me in some future tournaments, I'd be more than happy. I expected a slight uptick in control due to the Unified Modern results, but still no control matchup. Wondering if the Cavern of Souls and Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir is worth it, but I really enjoy that angle of attack on control decks which we tend to struggle against G1.

Deck Changes prior to Modern Competitive League #2

olag, 8 years ago

Before I ran the deck through a league, I made a few changes to the deck:

Mainboard:
-1 Dispel
-1 Vendilion Clique
+1 Sun Titan
+1Island

Sideboard:
-1 Wear / Tear
+1 Lone Missionary

Dispel was not pulling its own weight as a mainboard slot. The 2nd Vendilion Clique felt like overkill. Trying out a 24th land to complement a mainboard Sun Titan, a 6cmc card with the potential to get value or combo.

FNM - 4/7/17

Shalmaneser_V, 8 years ago

Round 1: Won 2-0 against Grixis Pia's Revolution. Opponent's deck wasn't able to get off defense, and eventually succumbed. Dealing with Foundry Inspector is easiest way to keep the deck off its feet. Round 2: Went to time, tied 1-1 against Esper Control. Fell victim to Immolating Glare (of all things!) and repeated Planar Outburst/Descend Upon the Sinful + Gideon in game one. Game two went wide and overcame with multiple walkers. Round 3: Lost 0-2 against G/B Delerium. Game one was close, but stumbled and couldn't deal with Liliana. Game two I mulled to 5, and (foolishly) kept a no-land hand. Drew two plains off the top to Declaration his Grim Flayer, but didn't draw any more and was quickly beaten by Flayer/Liliana/Gearhulk. Round 4: Lost 1-2 to W/B Control. Games were close, but was overcome by Gonti, Lord of Luxury stealing and playing my own Gideons. That Aetherborn's a beast. Decklist Update: I've acquired two Heart of Kirans and a Blessed Alliance. I'm replacing two Silvan Advocates with the Hearts, and I'll be dropping the Alliance into the sideboard, replacing the Tireless Tracker.

Storm wasnt working so well. The deck felt like it was streched to thing trying to do different things. So I'm taking out the combo and adding some more reliable damage.

Another portion of changes:
- Liliana Vess: I mostly used this card as a tutor but she's rather slow. So I moved her to my Zombie deck Twins of Innistrad (B/U Zombies and Shapeshifters).
- Visara the Dreadful: her ability is great but I need something that works immediately.
+ Gisela, Blade of Goldnight: I count on her ability.
+ Avacyn, Angel of Hope: because she's a great protector.
Maybeboard: I'm looking for some useful instants and Beastmaster Ascension as a finisher.
I also want to add Conspiracy to the maybeboard just because about 1/2 of my creatures aren't Soldiers. I'm still trying to build a synergistic deck so adding Conspiracy is a part of experiment.

Thicket Elemental -> Silverglade Elemental. With Omnath out, Silverglade can lead to the same effect without paying the kicker. Without Omnath, it allows me to ramp into Omnath.

Second Harvest -> Selvala's Stampede. Second Harvest was a bit win-more.

Animist's Awakening -> Indomitable Creativity. Dual-purpose card that can take care of threats and also turn my elementals into lightning bolts + fresh creatures.

Mountain -> Rite of the Raging Storm. Land count is fine, and Rite of the Raging Storm will be a fun addition.

The "Draw More Cards" Mandate

NaR, 8 years ago

Zombify > Grim Haruspex The deck needs more draw spells. I will have to count everything to see if cutting a reanimate spell is the right place to cut, but for now, I think cutting arguably my worst reanimate spell is not a bad idea.

Few changes - Counters, Wincons, and Boosts

Decisive, 8 years ago

Removed the following:

-Crawlspace. Not as useful as first thought to be

-Oath of Ajani. One time use, obsolete after playing it

-Exquisite Archangel. Just didn't like this one

Added the following:

-Vault of the Archangel. Deathtouch and lifelink? Worth

-Ajani Steadfast.+1 is nice, -2 is better, -7 is just extra

-Sublime Archangel. Exalted to all my creatures. 'Nuff Said
