You'll Wish You Had One With Nothing

Commander / EDH* RGWU

Of all of the cards in MTG one of my favorites is Viseling it is a 2/2 artifact creature that reads: "At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, Viseling deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in his or her hand minus 4"

I wanted to build an entire commander deck around Viseling, so I did under Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis. I chose this commander for both the colors and for additional card draw for my opponents because if I want to kill them, I need them to have a lot of cards in their hand.

The goal of this deck is to punish opponents for having cards in their hands in as many ways as possible and to get players at the table to say "man... I wish I had One with Nothing".

So the first task was to find cards that have similar effects to Viseling. These include Black Vise, Cerebral Vortex, Ebony Owl Netsuke, Fevered Visions, Gaze of Adamaro, Iron Maiden, Khorvath's Fury, Molten Psyche, Runeflare Trap, Storm Seeker, Stormbreath Dragon, Sudden Impact, Sword of War and Peace, and Vicious Shadows.

The next task was to find ways to abuse Viseling.

A great way to abuse viseling is to just simply copy it, this can be accomplished by using Clever Impersonator, Followed Footsteps, Mechanized Production, Progenitor Mimic, and Rite of Replication. Rite of Replication kicked targeting Viseling is brutal. If the opponent has 7 cards in their hand then that means they will take 18 damage every upkeep.

Another great way to abuse Viseling is to use Paradox Haze on an opponent, this will trigger an additional upkeep for that player which can be quite funny. Another fun curse you to make it more difficult for a target player to get cards out of their is Curse of Exhaustion.

The next task is to get opponents to draw cards, great ways to do this is to use Dictate of Kruphix, Font of Mythos, Forced Fruition, Howling Mine, Minds Aglow, Nin, the Pain Artist, Prosperity, Rites of Flourishing, Temple Bell, and Windfall.

Additionally, forcing all players to have no max hand size is quite fun with Viseling. Sadly, there are very few cards that do this. The two that I run in this deck are Anvil of Bogardan, and Folio of Fancies. But, on the bright side many players run Reliquary Tower which when they play it against this deck it is very funny because it is a huge mistake.

Lastly, there needs to be some alternate win cons. This deck runs many creatures that have power and toughness based on hand sizes these creatures are Adamaro, First to Desire, Maro, Multani, Maro-Sorcerer, Realm Seekers, Sage of Ancient Lore  , Sturmgeist, and Psychosis Crawler. With any of these cards on board, and ways to buff them up with cards like Overwhelming Stampede, Sunbringer's Touch, Inner Calm, Outer Strength, Empyrial Plate and Empyrial Armor allowing potential to just win through combat.
