The Trinisphere Episode 1 Chance Encounter Commander: Mikaeus, the Lunarch

During the first episode of The Trinisphere, during the "Chance Encounter" segment, we randomly selected Mikaeus, the Lunarch. We each built the deck in our own unique way to showcase the diversity of the three psychographic profiles.

Goal

Mikaeus, the Lunarch is a XW commander that puts +1/+1 counters on each other creature you control. This lends itself to a go-wide strategy of generating a lot of tokens. Unfortunately, this strategy is fairly commonplace, and does not allow for a significant amount of brewing. With a token heavy strategy you are trading resilience to spot removal for vulnerability to board-wipes.

Design

Mono-white doesn't allow much room for creativity, so we're going to limit the number of sub-themes in the deck. The main themes of the deck are:

• Ramp & Draw - combined due to few efficient outlets
• Anthem effects - increasing power/toughness and adding +1/+1 counters
• Counter Consumers - cards that can utilize +1/+1 counters in a meaningful way
• Token generation - providing bodies to place counters on
• Removal - to deal with threats that can't be deal with by creature swarms
• Utility - one-off cards to deal with particular threats

Ramp & Draw

• Phyrexian Altar & Ashnod's Altar can be used to generate infinite mana with Pentavus or Thopter Squadron when you have a Cathars' Crusade out.
• Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Dreamstone Hedron, Hedron Archive, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere all provide extra mana to pump into a big X spell to generate a quick army.

Anthem Effects

• Cathars' Crusade is the true MVP of the deck, turning waves of tokens into huge beaters while combo-ing with Pentavus, Animation Module and Thopter Squadron.
• Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite and Crovax, Ascendant Hero both pull double duty of pumping your board, while devastating opponents boards when you play Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Kormus Bell.
• Angelic Field Marshal and Heliod, God of the Sun gives your team vigilance, which allows you to swing with Mikaeus and pump your team after blocks

Counter Consumers

• Crystalline Crawler can turn excess +1/+1 counters into mana
• Inkmoth Nexus gives you the option of pumping up your land and flying over top
• Hangarback Walker, Pentavus, and Thopter Squadron turn +1/+1 counters into more tokens

Token Generators

• Luminarch Ascension, Entreat the Angels, and Martial Coup provide methods to create large armies that need to be answered immediately
• White Sun's Zenith, Secure the Wastes, and Decree of Justice (cycled) provide instant-speed armies to catch your opponents off-guard

Removal

• Hour of Reckoning and Martial Coup help keep your board presence up while destroying your opponents'
• Luminate Primordial, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Return to Dust, and Collective Effort deal with obvious threats to your wide strategy

Utility

• Humility allows you to maximize the effectiveness of your +1/+1 counters by turning all creatures into base 1/1's
• Idyllic Tutor and Enlightened Tutor help fetch up your Cathars' Crusade, Kormus Bell, or Ashnod's Altar
• Expedition Map and Weathered Wayfarer help fetch up your Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or Emeria, The Sky Ruin when needed.
• Ring of Thune grants Mikaeus vigilance as well as allows you to pump your board every turn without running out of +1/+1 counters.

Gameplay

• Focusing on Ramping into a big X Tokens spell is the way to go. Hopefully you can get your hands on Cathars' Crusade and use an instant-speed token spell to sneak in a big swing.
• Generate infinite tokens with Cathars' Crusade, Ashnod's Altar and Pentavus or Thopter Squadron.
• Blow up your opponents lands with Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite/Crovax, Ascendant Hero/Hour of Reckoning/Martial Coup and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Kormus Bell or simply swing at them with your lands with Mikaeus on backup to pump them at instant speed.
• Resolve Humility to flatten all creatures into 1/1's and dominate your opponents with your +1/+1 counter laden creatures.

Hopefully this deck displays some of the strategies behind Timmy deck-building, even if the subject matter is bland and fairly one-dimensional.
