Maybeboard

Overview:

Unlike most of my decks, this is not based around a tribal component; however, it's still based around a single theme: red/white split cards. The thought process is that every card in the deck is both red and white, and makes use out of that. As a result, many of the cards also have first strike (a typical Boros mechanic).

  • Battlegate Mimic & Belligerent Hatchling - These are just shadowmoor era cards that receive an immediate benefits from other spells that are both red & white. A 2/2 first striker for four is woefully overcosted, but with the first two spells you cast, he gets +2/+2 permanently, so that seems viable (though not incredibly powerful, which is why there are a limited number in the deck).

  • Legion's Initiative & Balefire Liege - These cards benefit creatures that are both red and white, effectively triggering twice for each creature/spell in the deck.

  • Figure of Destiny & Sky Terror - These are just solid cards that are on theme for good value.

Card Draw and Enchantment/Artifact Removal:

As the decks I make are casual and do not have sideboards, any deck tries to conform to two stipulations: it must be able to deal with artifacts/enchantments (preferably at least two cards) and it should also have some element of card draw. Both of these features should attempt to stay on theme whenever possible.

Sadly, R/W is not a strong color for card draw--and I couldn't find any solution that stayed on theme (ie. required both red and white). The only card I can find that meets the definition is Nahiri, the Harbinger and she isn't a strong inclusion in the deck.

  • Duergar Hedge-Mage - This is a perfect, on theme addition that fills both slots with a single card, plus gives a reasonable size chump blocker as well. Frankly, the deck might be stronger if I add another of him.

Win Conditions:The deck can win by putting out a large finisher like Aurelia, the Warleader (and to a lesser extent: Gisela, Blade of Goldnight or Iroas, God of Victory), but often winds by grinding out a standstill based upon putting up a wall of first-strikers and then killing people with either a large flying Figure of Destiny or grinding them down with the effect of a Balefire Liege.
