When I set out to build a Riku deck, I wanted to make something flavorful that was keeping in the spirit of this tricky wizard. I decided to keep the CMC balanced, opting for instant-speed shenanigans and small creatures that do a lot to affect the game until I can use copy effects to mirror other players' threats, deal massive damage with Purphoros, God of the Forge and token production, or combo with Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Splinter Twin.

Deck Mechanics

• Because of the strong draw power of the deck, I've included a number of cards that let me play extra lands from my hand--particularly Exploration and Burgeoning. These mana-efficient enchantments often duck under the radar of spot removal, but even if they stick around for only one turn, it's mana well spent. Burgeoning is especially nice in that it opens up mana to use on other players' turns. I have included Day's Undoing for its overall usefulness, but also for the Burgeoning god hand.

• Rather than pack the deck with counterspells, I've included a few good ones and plenty of ways to get them back. Mystic Snake is handy in that it's easily recurred with cards like Cackling Counterpart, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, and, god help us, Mimic Vat.

• Speaking of Mimic Vat (and Flameshadow Conjuring), this deck has tons of great targets for them. My favorites are Eternal Witness, Coiling Oracle, Man-o'-War , Mulldrifter, Prime Speaker Zegana, Venser, Shaper Savant, and Ixidron (for when you just need to lock things down.) They get even better with Parallel Lives.

• Time Stop is one of my favorite cards in Magicdom. Does it cost a lot? Yes. But its capacity for breaking the game is so tantalizing that I wanted to include it. It's a Counterspell, a Stifle, a Fog, and, when it gets down to 1v1, a Time Walk--in fact, it often operates as a little bit of everything. That said, I try not to be a bully with it.

• Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker practically acts as a second commander with all of the ETB effects here. I'm not normally a fan of infinite combos, but I do have Zealous Conscripts in here for when I'm playing with one of those Spike-y groups that calls for it. Zealous Conscripts is also fantastic on its own, unlike Pestermite and Deceiver Exarch, which are far more narrow in what they bring to the table.
