Maybeboard

THIS DECK IS NO LONGER BEING UPDATED

I have decided to rebuild this deck into a new Izzet Spellslinger Deck -> Zaffai's Thunder Train

The reason behind this is that Mizzix deck is simply impossible to balance for a casual meta. The deck is always too powerful and wins in a single turn or useless and doing almost nothing and either way it seems very uninteractive for your opponents.

That's why I've rebuild the deck with the new Zaffai commander and it has turned out to be much better choice for casual play and more enjoyable for both sides.

When asked how much power is required, Izzet mages always answer "more."

Deck Description

Hello, I am Sheld and this is my Mizzix commander deck. It is the first MTG deck I've built. I have tweaked this deck a LOT to balance its power, consistency and enjoyableness (for me and for others). I know that a Mizzix deck can be much more powerful but the goal of this deck is to be fun to play casually with friends.

That's why I don't play any infinite combos and buyback cards. I also tried to limit the number of tutors and extra turn cards. Playing infinite combos with tutors makes the deck too powerful for a casual meta and also makes it boring as you always win the same way and don't get to experience most of your deck. Buyback and extra turn cards are just too annoying for others so I tried to hold back on them. I also tried to include more permanents so the deck is a bit more flavorful and interactive.

That being said, this deck is still not the most enjoyable for others as it usually wins with long solitaire combos. From my experience with Mizzix you pretty much have to choose between playing infinite combos (which make the deck extremely powerful for a casual meta) or playing for the solitaire win. That's why I don't recommend anyone having a Mizzix deck as their only EDH deck if they mainly play in a casual meta.

If you want to make a significantly more powerful version of the deck, put in the cards from the maybeboard to add an infinite combo. ( Firemind's Foresight tutors for Fall of the Titans , Desperate Ritual and Reiterate . Desperate Ritual with Reiterate create infinite red mana and Fall of the Titans with Reiterate kill all your opponents. Additionally, Mystical Tutor can tutor for Firemind's Foresight .)

Give the deck +1 if you like it and and let me know what you think about it. Any comments and suggestions are much appreciated. :)

Deck Strategy

The key to success with this deck is to defend Mizzix . Everybody at the table will know you're playing a combo deck and that Mizzix is the key to go off, so they will try to remove her as soon as they can.

You want to either cast her as soon as possible on turn 3 or 4 and pray that nobody has an answer yet or doesn't want to spend their turn by casting it, or wait until you have a counterspell ready and then cast Mizzix .

If you start your turn with Mizzix on the battlefield, at least 2 or 3 experience counters, a spell which gives you mana in some way, card-draw spell and ideally some kind of fork spell in your hand, chances are you are going to win the game - either you create some combo and win or you get ton of experience counters and find some removal and counterspells to survive and defend Mizzix easily until your next turn.

As with every deck in EDH, it can help you a lot to use table politics to your advantage. However, when playing a deck which can win in a single turn, people tend to not want to make deals with you.
