Hello, and welcome to the newest episode of standard bannings™!
Due to a recent banning of Rampaging Ferocidon , Ramunap Ruins , Attune with Aether , and everyone's favorite value card Rogue Refiner , standard finds itself in a spot where anyone, I mean anyone, can take the crown as the deck to beat! Let's take a look at our latest contestant!!!
Out of all the tribes introduced and still standing * cough * zombies * cough *, pirates felt like uncharted territory. Going off that hunch, I decided to build what I believe is the optimal color scheme and build for the scallywags. Let's hop ship and get right into it.

All right, the focus of this deck is to press the opponent with aggressive and versatile threats. This can be accomplished via aggressive one-drops like Daring Buccaneer and Rigging Runner , your menacing two-drops, and Dire Fleet Neckbreaker .
Cards like Deadeye Tracker , Fathom Fleet Captain , and Forerunner of the Coalition help us to stay in it for the long game.
The versatility of the deck, I believe, is one of its strong points. It is an aggro deck, but some of the cards in the main... and a ton in the sideboard make games two and three feel much more balanced.
BREAKDOWN
Creatures
- Captain Lannery Storm presents an hasty threat, with ramp/pump abilities slapped on
- Daring Buccaneer is a value-oriented creature, being he has a low cost and high atk/def
- Deadeye Tracker removes problem cards from graveyards at a low price (caveat being he needs 2 cards)
- Dire Fleet Captain is a bear that pumps when attacking with other pirate scum
- Dire Fleet Neckbreaker provides an attacking anthem for the team in order to close out games
- Fathom Fleet Captain floods the board with menacing pirates (don't forget he needs nontoken pirates to activate!!!)
- Forerunner of the Coalition grants the ability to search for a silver bullet and drains the opponent
- Kari Zev, Skyship Raider has two relevant keywords and creates another attacking creature
- Metallic Mimic is a lord we should all know about now, but its ability is not to be trifled with, just ask the guy getting attacked by four 3/3 menace pirates guy - "it sucks!"
- Rigging Runner is our other aggressive one-drop with first-strike and a counter-adding raid trigger
Spells
- Claim recurs most of our fleet for , while its second-half Fame gets in for a bit more damage lategame
- Cut presents a decent (but slow) removal card and a possible finisher in Ribbons
- Fatal Push pushes things off tall buildings, 'nuff said
- Unlicensed Disintegration is a very time-consuming way of saying "creature ded, take 3"
Artifacts
- Aethersphere Harvester is a flying vehicle that can regain up to 6 points of life... oh yeah, with crew 1
- Fell Flagship is not only a decent vehicle with a Raven's Crime ability, it is also a pirate anthem
Land
this is where deviation is most likely to occur since there are so many options to choose from. These are my choices for best rakdos lands
- Canyon Slough is an etb tapped dual land that you can cycle if it's topdecked
- Dragonskull Summit is our land that taps for two colors while regularly coming in untapped
- Field of Ruin removes pesky flip cards like Azcanta, the Sunken Ruin
- Mountain to be able to play red spells
- Scavenger Grounds is extra graveyard hate and a land, so that's neat
- Swamp to be honest, it's only still here because it hasn't been drained yet :)
Sideboard
Here's where everyone will pick me apart the most, but I'll still go through it.
- Abrade is anti God-Pharaoh's Gift , Torrential Gearhulk , Verdurous Gearhulk , creatures with 3-or-less toughness, vehicles, and extra combat damage to creatures
- Angrath, the Flame-Chained , if resolved, smacks control players right in the chops with his plus and ulti
- Chandra, Torch of Defiance is a standard all-star, she "draws" you extra cards or Shock s the opponent, creates mana, kills creatures, and wins games
- Dire Fleet Daredevil comes in against spell heavy midrange decks and control players (just go ahead and Abrade that Torrential Gearhulk they flashed in last turn to Glimmer of Genius , do it, you will not regret it)
- Dire Fleet Poisoner pops creature-heavy decks right in the kisser by being a flash-deathtouch creature, and granting +1/+1 and deathtouch to another attacking pirate * cough * * cough * Rigging Runner / Fathom Fleet Captain * cough *
- Kitesail Freebooter is a sidegrade to Tidehollow Sculler by way of also removing a card until it leaves, buuuuuut can't do the shenanigans of perma-exile, has flying, and is monocolored
- Skysovereign, Consul Flagship is another vehicle with crew 3, the only differences being it costs 5 mana and Lightning Bolt s things on etb and attack
- Vraska's Contempt is your catchall removal spell with some lifegain sprinkled in
