The mana curve looks like gun fingers atm.

Comments especially welcome if you think I'm wrong.

I edit this often and pretty much at random, no mandela effect here.

Welcome to a very opinionated page about the best 2 stroke canal boat in the command zone.

I've been playing Zur since he was good. Every card choice here is quite deliberate. The current focus of this deck is to control the stack while setting up Ad Nauseam. Lots of counterspells and mana help make things possible.

I find the offensive and defensive modality of counterspells to be more useful than disruptive permanents. "Stax pieces" (Zoomer word for lock piece), do not help Ad Nauseam decks combo off for the most part. Cards like Stony Silence and Arcane Laboratory are incredibly powerful at both stopping your enemies and you, which invalidates a lot of seemingly natural enchantment choices for a Zur deck. A few exceptions have crept in and out of the deck over the years depending on the flavour of the month. Drannith Magistrate is worth his weight in gold right now, as is Dauthi Voidwalker.

Instead of playing for a long game this deck is focused on setting up a combo win as fast as possible, and then executing it with a high degree of protection at the right moment.

Notable Card Omissions:

Jeweled Lotus: Doesn't help cast Ad Nauseam.

Emergence Zone: I'm declaring this a zoomer card until someone explains to me how i was playing it wrong all along.

Fierce Guardianship: Its in the deck now, because the casting cost is easier on blue mana than counterspell even if its not free.

Old Fierce Guardianship Opinion Show

Force of Negation: Much like Fierce Guardianship but exacerbated, this card is only free in defensive situations and not on the winning turn. A 2 mana counter is much better if you're putting Zur on the stack or going for a win.

Yawgmoth's Will: We are living in the age of the machine gun now, and cavalry are obsolete. This is the scope of the paradigm shift that Underworld Breach has wrought. Yawgwill is now simply the second best yawgwill effect and mostly exists in an adjunct role to the enchantment. In addition without Dockside Extortionist or Lion's Eye Diamond its very hard to make Yawgmoth's Will fatal to your opponents or even very impressive. Furthermore Necropotence and Yawgmoth's Will are not synergistic. Its the wrong deck for a great card. I really cannot understate how big a deal Underworld Breach is for redefining how magic functions as a game. This is a new age.

Urza's Saga came out after a string of games with particularly bad mana. Many double white, double black, and double blue spells exist in this deck and i've decided that there is not enough room for this slower, colourless, utility land.

Praetor's Grasp just wasn't great in my meta. Without any Thassa's Oracles to fetch, this card is much worse.

Gilded Drake: This is a conflicting card. The power to swing a game is pretty obvious, but it also happens at sorcery speed and necessitates your opponents resolving something first. I'm much more inclined to have another counterspell in my deck than this card at this time.

Orcish Bowmasters This card is insane and should be included but i can't find 2 cuts (other cut for Windfall).

Cards I may soon try:

Orcish Bowmasters its power creep incarnate. Windfall Bowmasters gives this card potentially way more upside.

Cards that i currently consider the weakest in the deck:

Heliod, Sun-Crowned + Walking Ballista This combo might be superfluous compared to the pact combo, and having 6 total cards dedicated to winning is much more than 4. Being able to tutor half of it with Zur is a big potential upside so im trying it, but it wouldn't surprise me if its just too many combo cards.

Musings:

Eventually after many years I've decided to play Lotus Petal. Since having a commander is deterministic, and Zur always advances your game plan (in any situation where you could possibly come back), that drawing mana is always good. Even if its just a humble treasure.

I played about 30 games with Culling the Weak and my opinion went from very optimistic to somewhat negative. If culling is countered its basically asking to lose the game in a lot of situations, since you're down a creature as well and the creatures this deck actually casts are extremely high quality. Zur being 4 mana also doesn't synergize well with the ritual.

The boys in R&D aren't ready to talk about Omen Machine yet. Also most of that dev team was killed when the lab blew up.

Triskaidekaphile was on probationary trial because it does a lot of things and one of them ends the game. It was very low impact as expected, why not play Lab Maniac? (which i am/was also not playing)

Disenchant effects are highly important for a deck like this and for avoiding longer games.

Ivory Tower has finally come out for Serra Ascendant which is basically the same card but front loaded. The sorrow of this update is real, but ivory tower really doesn't secure games it like did in years past.

I'm rating In Too Deep extremely highly at the moment. My estimation could possibly drop but i can't imagine why or how. (It dropped in time, its not great.)

The deck was not leveraging Windfall enough to really justify it.

**2024 changes: **

The main ones are to add in more fast mana and a second infinite win condition with Ballista + Heliod combo, which might not even be that necessary but im trying it out.

Since Zur gets Necropotence the thing you want most for consistency is just having mana, mana, and more mana to lead into a big draw.

Lotho seems extremely powerful and consistent for mana purposes, and he makes the non blue signet and talisman much more attractive as well so they're in. (Lotho is currently out because the deck ended up having too much mana).

I'm yet to find room for both Orcish Bowmasters and Windfall but i'd like to play those.

Losing brainstorm hurts but its the worst cantrip to smooth out the early game and is somewhat win more.

Otawara is probably worse than a dual land of some sort but im also trying it out. (Ed: it was WAY worse)

Borne Upon a Wind seems much better than Emergence Zone. But it turned out to mostly be win more like most of the flash enablers i've tried.

Timetwister has finally come out in favour of The One Ring + Rhystic Study and Archivist of Oghma. I'm trying a draw engine package because i find im not respecting the potential for longer drawn out games and the lack of plan b draw was hurting me.
