Maybeboard

Brokkos Buried in this Jungle. The Apex of Forever keeps coming back from the grave to dish out pummelings. Mutate Brokkos onto a gnarly host and turn it sideways. Stack your mutant piles onto creatures like Mist-Syndicate Naga and Scute Swarm to grow a small army of Mutant clones. Keep the board clear with a variety of removal and swing for the fences.

Voltron was one of the first strategies I really enjoyed when I first got into Magic about 7 years ago. Since then I've built various Voltron iterations, with my first EDH deck being Tuvasa the Sunlit. I think brokkos's ability to be cast from the graveyard, and having a more robust suite of Black-based removal helps address some of the weaknesses that I encountered with Bantchantments.

What does Brokkos want to do?

A variety of creatures for Brokkos to mutate onto

  • Baleful Strix Deathtouch, flying, and it draws a card on ETB? Nice.

  • Cephalid Constable Gonna be filthy to swing in for 6 and make an opponent pick up 6 permanents. Potential finisher if down to a 1v1 scenario. Not as useful against Token based strategies, but can help clear up those heavy boards for political good-will with the rest of the table.

  • Cold-Eyed Selkie Swing and draw 6 cards. Pseudo-evasive if defending player is running Blue. Huge draw can help filter through your deck and/or replenish hands.

  • Dirge Bat More likely to be a host with its CMC vs its Mutate cost. Creature and Planeswalker removal with the potential to scale

  • Drana, the Last Bloodchief Swing and recur hosts and mutants. Flying is a little cherry on top.

  • Elusive Tormentor  /Insidious Mist   All I can say is this. Hexproof, indestructible, and unblock-ability on Brokkos can be filthy

  • Needle Specter Really messes with strategies that do not want to wheel or fill their graveyards

  • Silhana Ledgewalker Hexproof and pseudo-evasion. Kind of like a Canopy Cover on legs

  • Slippery Bogle More small hexproof hosts

  • Toski, Bearer of Secrets Replacing Darksteel Myr. Fits nicely on curve to give a nice indestructible body with draw potential.

  • Trygon Predator Swing and remove some stuff

  • Virtus the Veiled Halve a life total and dish out additional damage on top of that.

An additional wrinkle of value.

Gotta go fast. Brokkos is a bit hefty with a 5cmc Mutate cost. Hopefully the ramp will help us get this beast out T3-T4. Scute Swarm can keep these spells relevant past T6, especially if Scute is a host for a Mutant.

Mana Rocks

A nice variety of removal. Could maybe switch one out for another wipe.

There is some value sprinkled throughout each category, but here is some stuff I thought didn't quite fit as neatly

  • Deathreap Ritual I play in a fairly creature-heavy meta. This adds additional value to creature deaths around the board, especially if I do not have any of my protection pieces available.

  • Guardian Project Draw some cards on non-token creature ETBs. Might play-test and replace with Court of Bounty

  • Homeward Path Recently had Brokkos stolen in a game, so having an emergency recall for stolen creatures is good.

  • Leyline of Anticipation Turn mutants into combat tricks and sorcery speed board wipes become more dangerous.

  • Return of the Wildspeaker Go wide pump, or draw a lot of cards

  • Scheming Symmetry Tutor up some solutions and play politics

  • Vivien, Champion of the Wilds Makes Mutants into combat tricks, adds some more flying defense, and can dig for/protect a creature

Clone effects

These creatures are mostly in the deck to create copies of Mutate stacks, not necessarily with Brokkos on top, but for Brokkos to have copies available to Mutate onto.

  • Clever Impersonator Value to copy anything around the table. Could potentially be a host if I copy something scary from the table.

  • Mist-Syndicate Naga Surprise clones with Ninjutusu.

  • Mystic Reflection Can be used for removal, or can pull off some fun plays with mutate stacks and Mist-Syndicate Naga, Scute Swarm, and Spawnwrithe

  • Sakashima of a Thousand Faces Recently got lucky and pulled one from a pack. Felt it could fit in this deck to open up the possibilities for clone stacks if the Legend Rule is out the window, especially with Brokkos or other legendary creatures on my side of the board.

  • Scute Swarm Creates chump blockers at first, then can clone itself with Landfall, which is less risky than having to connect with combat damage, and makes late game ramp more useful.

  • Spawnwrithe It's like a Green Mist-Syndicate Naga, and clones itself when it hits someone in the face.

  • Stunt Double More likely to be a surprise blocker, but can also copy something scary around the board

At this point all of the cards in the iffy section have been cut, except for Dirge Bat, but I figured the explanations could be helpful.

Cards I'm kinda iffy on:

  • Ana Sanctuary Kinda cool to get +5/+5 on a creature, but it slow and telegraphed since I have to wait until my next upkeep to use it, and any of my creatures on board would be susceptible to removal in the meantime.

  • Deathsprout Ramp and removal stapled together is kinda weird, but the more restrictive mana cost is a bit of a turn-off.

  • Dredge the Mire Could be kind of cool to get some creatures as potential Mutate targets, but more likely than not other players will probably just give the worst creatures from their yards

  • Dirge Bat The CMC makes it lean more as a hard-cast vs being a Mutate cast. Deck is already kinda removal heavy.

  • Glowstone Recluse The deck already has plenty of creatures with Flying for offense & defense. This feels like it fit better in a Mutate build that has +1/+1 counters as a more dedicated sub-theme

  • Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma The reduction for beefy creatures is kinda useful, but the swing effect might not happen consistently enough

  • Insatiable Hemophage The group slug & lifegain doesn't seem like it would be super impactful. A creature/mutate stack might get 2-4 triggers off this

  • Mindleecher I'm not sure how many times any creature in this deck will be able to repeatedly mutate to really get multiple triggers off of this.

  • Mortus Strider Will bring a mutated stack back to hand. The on death trigger feels kinda bad.

  • Wilderness Reclamation Originally slotted it for effect overlap with Seedborn Muse. Each time I had it in-hand during games, I felt like there were other, more impactful plays I could be making on T4 instead.

Updates Add

Will update the deck once Kaldheim is completely spoiled. Preemptively thinking that Toski, Bearer of Secrets will replace Darksteel Myr
