Maybeboard

Trying to build something around the Naya commander Atla Palani. This deck, different of most of the strategies with Atla that relies on cheating big creatures onto the battlefield, tries to combo off with Atla and a lot of Shapeshifter creatures (that have Changeling, making them Eggs) and creatures with reanimation ETB effects or dying triggers, creating loops where we sacrifice creatures, cheats new creatures onto the battlefield, doing this process repeatedly until we win the game.

The combos of this deck are very fragile compared with another combos in the EDH format (mainly cEDH combos), but I had a lot of fun trying to elaborate these combos on the same day that Atla was announced. The combos of this deck relies on 3+ cards, but this deck have some protection spells that can prevent our combo from being disrupted, some of them having zero cost if Atla is in the field (e.g. Flawless Maneuver ).

This deck have a lot of difficulties to win without a combo, but, when the loop begins, even that the combos may fizzle, in most of the cases, the loops are infinite and we win the game from it.

Combos and loops

This combo consists on Skirk Prospector , Goblin Matron and Tarfire .

With Skirk Prospector, we can sacrifice goblins (creatures with Changeling are also Goblins too) to generate red mana. Here are the steps of this combo.

  • Sacrifice a Shapeshifter with Atla on the battlefield to generate a red mana and trigger Atla's ability.

  • Eventually, Atla's loops will cheat Goblin Matron on the battlefield.

  • With Matron's ETB, get Tarfire (despite not being a creature, is a Goblin).

  • Use one red mana to cast Tarfire and deal 2 damage to any target.

  • Continue sacrificing Shapeshifters (and Matron) until you hit Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and put it into play.

  • Sacrifice Ulamog to shuffle all cards in your graveyard back to the library.

  • Repeat this process a number of times enough to burn all opponents out of the game.

This combo may fizzle but often, when established, is a win for this deck.

Karmic Guide , a sac outlet and a champion loop: This combo consists on:

Protean Hulk tutors creatures with total converted mana cost 6 or less. This includes some combinations like:

Explanations of (some) cards

  • Changeling Berserker can exile other creatures when enters the battlefield. In the worst case, exile nothing and they're sacrificed, triggering Atla. A good target for exiling is Irregular Cohort , because it generates another Shapeshifter when it enters the battlefield. They can combo off with Karmic Guide, Kiki-Jiki and a sacrifice outlet.

  • Chameleon Colossus : it have protection from black and can buff itself. With the Altars, this deck can eventually generate infinite mana. With this infinite mana, we can buff the Colossus to the point that it can mill an opponent library with Altar of Dementia or hit directly for taking one player out.

  • Mirror Entity is probably the best non-combo creature in this deck (it can combo with Mutagenic Growth but I'm not convinced about using it yet). It can use its ability with zero mana to transform all your creatures into Eggs and killing them for having zero toughness. It can trigger Atla many times, tutoring a great number of creatures, probably establishing the loop.

  • Shields of Velis Vel transforms creatures into Eggs, increasing the odds of the combo works.

We want to use permanents that sacrifices creatures for zero mana cost. This pack includes Altar of Dementia , Ashnod's Altar , Blasting Station (that will untap itself when Atla's trigger resolve), Fanatical Devotion , Goblin Bombardment , Martyr's Cause , Phyrexian Altar and Skirk Prospector (for goblins/Shapeshifters).

  • Angel of Glory's Rise revives human creatures. Because our Shapeshifters ARE also humans, its ETB revives all of them. Its ETB also exiles all zombies (which our Shapeshifters also are), but with a sacrifice outlet onto the battlefield, we can sacrifice all of them before the ETB effect resolves, returning them to the battlefield.

  • Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero is a way of protecting the deck against boardwipes. Its effect revives a lot of creatures at the same time, and may be necessary for us to reach a point where the Egg loops are established.

  • Rally the Ancestors is an Instant-speed reanimation spell that can revive a lot of creatures at once. Because our creatures doesn't have high mana costs, it's possible to cast it spending some mana. This card exiles the revived creatures in our next upkeep, but if we sacrifice them for out sacrifice outlets, they will die before that delayed trigger, saving them from exile.

  • Reveillark can revive two creatures, which is very important in our strategy. Our creatures also have low power, so there are a lot of candidates for its effect.

  • Sevinne's Reclamation can revive our creaures, but this card shines mostly because it can revive our sacrifice outlets, being the only card, alongside with Sun Titan , to have this function.

  • Deflecting Swat redirects removals targeting our combo pieces to another targets. It costs zero mana when Atla is on the field.

  • Flawless Maneuver is a way to protect Atla from destroying effects and damage. It costs zero mana when Atla is on the field.

  • Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves protects important combo pieces from removals, like our Atla;

  • Veil of Summer does a lot of protection functions inside this deck. It can draw a card in some situations, letting us to look for a way of protecting our board if Veil of Summer does not already do it. It prevents our spells from being countered.

  • Skullclamp draws a lot of cards when we equip it onto our creatures and we sacrifices them with the sac outlets that we use.

  • Sylvan Library draws up to three cards at once, or maybe it helps us to draw the piece we need on the top three cards of our deck.

  • Thrill of Possibility discard one and draw two. I will look for a better option soon.
