The 99 - A Better Syr Konrad, the Grim - Strategy & Game Plan: A Definitive Player Guide

How to Win in Three Easy Steps!

  1. Stall the Board
  2. Make Infinite Black Mana
  3. Cast Konrad and Activate the Syr's Ability

Syr Konrad is a Card brimming with potential all thanks to his Triggered Ability. Having the outlet in your Command Zone allows you to focus solely on how the 99 should perform. At 5cmc, this is an inherently slow list and being in Mono-Black doesn't help either. However, there are Infinite Mana strategies in Mono-Black that do not utilize the Graveyard - commonly shut down strategies due to Grave Hate pieces - that we can leverage to make Syr Konrad's darkest dreams come true.

Syr Konrad's list is lined with a multitude of ways to remove threats from our Opponents. We also have effects from the likes of Shred Memory and Praetor's Grasp that we can utilize to dismantle any strategies our Opponent's might use against us. Now that we've firmly established dominance over what we will allow to be played and remain, let's look at our Infinite combos.

With Infinite Black Mana we are able to Cast Syr Konrad and use his Activated Ability to continuously Mill everyone until: 1. They are unable to Draw on their Draw Step and Lose or 2. Damage them out with Kozilek, Butcher of Truth who will Deal 1 Damage both Entering and Leaving our Graveyard. We rely on Option 2 in most instances as we're not the only list running a Graveyard Shuffler, so it's best to simply Damage out the Board.

Three Infinite Black Mana Combos:

  1. Rings of Brighthearth + Deserted Temple + Cabal Coffers with a Minimum of Six Swamps = Infinite Black Mana

  2. Umbral Mantle + Magus of the Coffers with a Minimum of Six Swamps = Infinite Black Mana

  3. Rings of Brighthearth + Basalt Monolith + Initiates of the Ebon Hand = Infinite (Filtered) Black Mana

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth will be your best friend for the first two combos, while the third is not Swamp intensive at all. Your starting hand will primarily dictate which route you go. However, there is one more combo that can Win you the game without Infinite Mana.

This last combo is the most clean cut and efficient means of accomplishing a Win with this list. If it can be attempted, this is the combo you should play for.

Syr Konrad is as cut & dry as they come. While I wish these combos utilized solely Infinite Generic Mana to go off - looking at you Thrasios, Triton Hero and Urza, Lord High Artificer - we still have an excellent, new Commander with effects that are hard to stop. Cards like Cursed Totem & Null Rod will be the bane of this list, however we're able to overcome Grave Hate in a way we have never been able to in Mono-Black. For that alone, Syr Konrad is a worthy consideration for your next build. I hope this Primer and the following video(s) help you create a better Syr Konrad, the Grim
