Venerable Warsinger

Creature — Spirit Cleric

Vigilance, trample

Whenever this deals combat damage to a player, you may return target creature card with converted mana cost/mana value X or less from your graveyard to the battlefield, where X is the amount of damage Venerable Warsinger dealt to that player.

I have replaced Lightning Angel with Venerable Warsinger, which reduced this deck's average converted mana cost from 3.69 to 3.68, because, as great as the angel was, she was merely a flying beater, while the warsinger actually has a useful ability. I know that not all of the creatures in my deck have a mana value of 3 or less, but this deck has numerous ways to either increase either the warsinger's power or the damage that it deals, so I feel that it is a worthy addition to this deck.

After some more testing, I felt some changes are needed.

Rocco, Street Chef works way better than expected. I feel it has to be in the deck. Even with it forcing a green mana requirement in a Jeskai colors deck that's already struggling with color consistency. It's that crazy.

To try to make it fit better, I swapped out 2xEdgewall Inn and 2xMishra's Foundry with 2xPlaza of Heroes and 2 Restless lands (Restless Bivouac/Restless Anchorage). I wasn't needing the adventure recycle from the Inn in testing but I was getting reasonable color mana value from Plaza. The Foundry is stronger in a creature land role than the Restless lands. I usually find myself with little mana left open to animate a land, so Foundry worked while Restless lands are usually too expensive, but the color fixing on the Restless lands are helping. It's a tradeoff.

I also feel like more needed to be done for mana consistency. Too many mana screw hands were showing up on 23 lands. I tried out Buried Treasure and they're working. They help ramp out a 5-cost spell (especially Quintorius Kand) or mana fix for a Rocco or one of the double-color spells, and the Discover 5 on the back end also flows naturally with the deck's flow. I took out 1xGeological Appraiser and 1xVenerable Warsinger. The Appraiser is maybe the weakest card even though the Discover 3 on cast ETB is absolutely necessary. And the Warsinger is good but getting multiples out tends to stall your gameplan in ways that put you in bad situations.

Lastly, tests with Aether Channeler were giving good results. It leveled up the tempo defensive game that feeds into successfully reaching for a couple more cards/turns before things get too bleak. In tests, that was consistently exactly what the deck needed to stabilize from early disadvantages from faster opponents. I took out the Imodane's Recruiter and reduced Ojer Pakpatiq, Deepest Epoch  Flip to 1x to fit a couple in. The Recruiter is explosive the turn it shows up but almost a complete blank after that. You almost always prefer to Discover into a Channeler instead of a Recruiter. Pakpatiq does struggle some by how instants need to be cast from hand to get the fun rebound tricks online, (and becomes worse with Rocco), so 2x was probably too much. But I still want access to it to get cheap virtues out.

I have replaced Flameblade Angel and Lightning Reaver with Aron, Benalia's Ruin and Venerable Warsinger, which reduced this deck's average converted mana cost from 3.95 to 3.87, which is very nice, because, as great as the previous creatures were, the current creatures have far better synergy with this deck's central theme.

Gidgetimer on Can Venerable Warsinger's ability target …

Yes, assuming that you trampled over the 3 damage. When combat damage is dealt the Venerable Warsinger ability will trigger and lethal damage will be marked on each creature. SBAs are then checked and each creature is destroyed for having lethal damage marked on it. Then triggered abilities are put on the stack and targets chosen. The Venerable Warsinger will be in the graveyard and will be a valid target.

I have a Venerable Warsinger equpped with a Loxodon Warhammer, and I attack with it. My opponent blocks with their Hill Giant, so the creatures trade in combat and my opponent takes 3 damage from trample. Would Venerable Warsinger be a valid target when the combat damage trigger is put on the stack?

Brion Stoutarm deck:

The Stoutarm

Commander / EDH jjmac112

SCORE: 2 | 7 COMMENTS | 1233 VIEWS | IN 1 FOLDER

So this is the deck as it was pre changes. First of all, I think you'll notice that I swapped 17 cards, not 15 lol. Secondly, you'll see that Osgir, the Reconstructor has taken Brion's job. After all the changes the deck has been through I found myself rarely casting Brion and the few time I've played with Osgir have been valuable experiences ;)

Cards out: Brion Stoutarm, Felidar Sovereign, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Serra Avatar, Iroas, God of Victory, Descend upon the Sinful, Elspeth, Knight-Errant, Magma Phoenix, Prison Term, Figure of Destiny, Student of Warfare, Prophetic Flamespeaker, Land Tax, Dawn of Hope, Lone Rider  Flip, Needle Spires

So with Brion out so too are the cards that combo with him the most like Serra Avatar and Magma Phoenix. With everything else I just needed to make space for stuff that I can squeeze a little (or a lot) more value out of. The one thing I am thinking should find its way back is Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. It's a powerful finisher and I'm now short on things that can take my board state and put an end to the game.

Cards in: Nahiri, the Lithomancer, Zirda, the Dawnwaker, Venerable Warsinger, Feldon of the Third Path, Battle Angels of Tyr, Dockside Extortionist, Deep Gnome Terramancer, Archivist of Oghma, Akiri, Line-Slinger, Wheel of Fortune, Faithless Looting, Teferi's Protection, Anointed Procession, Smuggler's Share, Expedition Map, Swiftfoot Boots, Darksteel Citadel

Also, I just realize I should add Rustvale Bridge and Treasure Vault

I tried shipwreck, but not overwhelmed. I like doomscar aswell and i wanna try Burn Down the House too. I need to craft more Patrician Geist only have 2. I strongly recommend Prismari Command it deals with the Esika's Chariot and does the draw discard. All of its options are great.. Have any of you guys tried Venerable Warsinger ? I have, low success, more creature focussed hard to make work :/
