Speaker of the Heavens

Creature — Human Cleric

Vigilance, lifelink

: Create a 4/4 white Angel creature token with flying. Activate this ability only if you have at least 7 life more than your starting life total and only at any time you could cast a sorcery.

I like your deck but cards that reduce your creatures cost are too slow. I see you got Serra Ascendant on your maybeboard, in my opionion that card is a better choice than Starnheim Aspirant even though it might take up to 3 turns before you get it big. I use to have Speaker of the Heavens on my deck. A lot of the times it’s going to be a brick in your hand unless you get 7 life quickly before the opponent immediately starts killing you. You’re better off with more life generators like Soul's Attendant which also gains you life if Righteous Valkyrie is in your board first and then gives you life every time a creature on both sides enter the battlefield. Another one too is Diamond Mare since you’re also mono-white.

Why Bone Splinters? It just seems like a bad option for this build. The more Allies you have, the better, so saccing one is kind of painful. AND it's only sorcery speed? Vendetta seems aligned with the deck's strong suits - you don't have any spells like Speaker of the Heavens that has a lifegain threshold, so whatever life you gain is just insurance anyway, right? There's also Path to Exile, Fatal Push, Cut Down, Cast Down, Devour in Shadow... so many more. I know some of those are over $1, but really, the added cost isn't that significant, and there are def plenty of instant speed removal spells for under $1.

Some thoughts:

  • Speaker of the Heavens feels pretty useful/mandatory here.

  • The Book of Exalted Deeds is pretty useless unless you have some way to abuse it (i.e putting it on a land). Steel Seraph also feels out-of-place and unhelpful here.

  • I’m not convinced that Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is helpful here, as it might trip-up your early turns more than it’ll help you late game - most your early turns require only white-pips, which it can’t help with. Late game i don’t see you needing mana anyway.

  • Even though I don’t think you want Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, i do think you need more lands. 20 is super low, and I would think this deck needs at least 23 to perform.

  • your deck is doing a lot at sorcery speed, you’re unlikely to be able to use Shelter in a way that isn’t clumsy - i’d just ditch it.

A few things.

1st off. I think a soul sisters deck and angel deck are not compatible. Soul sisters make and want as many lifegain triggers as possible. Maximizing cards like Voice of the Blessed . Angels i believe want to maintain x life above your starting life and gain in chunks of 5 for probably the best angel Resplendent Angel. These seem simular but that creates tough choices in deck design.

Book of Exalted Deeds with creature lands is a combo with Mutavault some decks just can't beat this.

I think you want the card draw off of Shelter but I personally think that card sux. You would likely be better with a green splash for just Collected Company or run a cheaper protection spell like Brave the Elements or a better card draw engine Welcoming Vampire perhaps.

Speaker of the Heavens is a suprise op card i have a angel deck on mtga for historic and it is a great agro card angels needed.

You are light in 1 key piece of any deck. Interaction.

March of Otherworldly Light is a favorite of mine.

Path to Exile could be decent

Dawn Charm niche counterspell/ protect a creature

Surge of Salvation protection vs opposing aggro

I'd suggest looking at another decks sideboard to help build a better one Check out decks like modern d&t or soul sister or angels and see what you want. But be sure to cover a few things.

Graveyard hate like Soul-Guide Lantern Something to fight control many different approachesCavern of Souls Thalia, Guardian of Thraben Artifact/enchantment hate Disenchant

And something for decks that you think you need more help with and expect to face. Perhaps a boardwipe for decks that go wide Doomskar or any other archetype/problem that needs fixing.

I think Resplendent Angel would be better than Archangel of Tithes in this deck. I also think Speaker of the Heavens would be another good one to add. Your creature density is also almost high enough I'm going to recommend a Collected Company Clean your sideboard out and put those into your maybe board so you can build an actual Sideboard but otherwise I think this deck looks good.

This deck is extremely heavy with nothing to do on turn one. Here are a few angel staples that you need to add. Speaker of the Heavens

Giada, Font of Hope

Resplendent Angel

Bishop of Wings

These should help make your deck more consistent. I'd take out cards that don't really do a whole lot to improve your overall strategy.

Some thoughts:

  • your mana curve is currently excessively high, with your average CMC sitting at 3.1 - this number should almost-always be below 2 (or, only slightly above 2). Modern decks typically can’t justify more than 4 cards costing 4-or-more mana, you’ve got a whopping 12, which is going to lead to some really slow/clumsy turns. Having soo many 3-mana cards only makes this worse.

  • Added to the above, you have almost nothing to do turn-1, meaning you’re often starting a full turn behind your opponent - a really dangerous place to be.

  • 21 lands is very low for what you’re trying to do here. Even after you lower the mana curve, i feel like you’ll still need 23 as an absolute minimum.

  • it’s worth noting that lifegain is one of the absolute weakest mechanics in magic, and if you’re going down that route you really need a very strong payoff to make it worthwhile. Both Speaker of the Heavens and Righteous Valkyrie are pretty mandatory in pretty-much all lifegain strategies.

darkmus, thank you again for taking point on this and for all of your help honing my decks! Khoaemon, thank you for the upvote and interest! darkmus is definitely better at explaining all of the interactions of the deck and far more in depth in their explanations. So if you are truly interested in learning the ins and outs of Angel tribal than check out their builds.

I personally love the Angel tribe most of any in MTG history, and I would always encourage anyone else to love them as well! I will offer my two cents on gameplay of this deck for posterity sake. I am a big fan of the white/black vs of the Modern Angel Deck as it offers us a variety of kill/exile/tutor spells if we desire them, Vindicate or Anguished Unmaking, Doom Blade, or Damn, etc. That plus the flavor of the Godless Shrine has always spoken to the heretic in me.

All that being said, I am a big fan of Selesnya and darkmus sure provides good arguments for those colors as well. i.e. Sigarda, Font of Blessings and Shalai, Voice of Plenty, also, hexproof rules! And, Heroic Intervention.

An Ideal first turn would be a Godless Shrine or Temple Garden, followed by Speaker of the Heavens, Esper Sentinel or Giver of Runes, though you could also do Segovian Angel or Aether Vial. ( I feel like we still need a better first turn play, but these are the best options A.T.M)

turn two is Bishop of Wings or Giada, Font of Hope

turn three, Righteous Valkyrie if you have it, or more of the same from T1, T2. or maybe removal.

turn 4, Resplendent Angel. and boom! More angels, more life than your opponent can handle, and With no interaction, you have most likely won the game by your next turn.

If you have not overpowered the opponent by then, you will hopefully keep spawning more angels via Resplendent Angel or boosting other angels via Giada, Font of Hope or your finisher angels Archangel of Thune or Lyra Dawnbringer.

I hope this helps, and let us know if you need any more assistance! That's why we are all here!
