Savage Thallid

Creature — Fungus

At the beginning of your upkeep, put a spore counter on Savage Thallid.

Remove three spore counters from Savage Thallid: Create a 1/1 green Saproling creature token.

Sacrifice a Saproling: Regenerate target Fungus. (The next time this creature would be destroyed, instead tap it, remove it from combat and heal all damage on it.)

So if you want this to be fungus based maybe use Thelon of Havenwood or maybe lean into the saporling part a little harder. Some cards to look at for saporling: Fungal Plots Verdant Force Tendershoot Dryad Sprout Swarm Jade Mage. For fungus: Sporesower Thallid Fungal Bloom Savage Thallid Smell Fear. Either or just good cards: Sylvan Anthem Necrogenesis Utopia Mycon Moldervine Reclamation all of these are under $10 and more or less fit theme. Of course feel free to do whatever you want.

Also for saprolings:

Deathspore Thallid, Savage Thallid, Thallid Devourer, Thallid Germinator and Vitaspore Thallid (as well as a bunch of cards that make saprolings themselves).

I would recommend an aristocratic build. You may choose to go spore counter route, which I'm not a huge fan of, but the following ones pull double duty (and I am a fan of):

On-theme Sac outlets that also make saprolings:

Deathspore Thallid: Great sac outlet and potential removal piece.

Savage Thallid: Another great sac outlet and protection piece.

Vitaspore Thallid: I think giving haste is the weakest effect of the bunch, this is just another budget on-theme sac outlet.

Budget sac payoffs,

Epicure of Blood and Marauding Blight-Priest: Help to increase the payoff of slimefoot and are so cheap they are essentially free (literally, ask anyone at your LGS for these, they have them and don't want them).

Falkenrath Noble: Who doesn't love life loss?

Poison-Tip Archer: Great blocker (reach and deathtouch? No one wants to lose there dragon to this) but this one starts to impact the budget.

Syr Konrad, the Grim: He just does soo much.

Vindictive Vampire: This guy should say life loss.... I mean, it's black and not red.

Zulaport Cutthroat: Classic but approaches a dollar.

Bastion of Remembrance: Possibly my favorite. Comes with free sac fodder on a permanent that doesn't die to Wrath of God.

Slime Foot god stuff,

Jade Mage: Back up slimefoot that does stuff at a discount.

Massacre Girl: Best board wipe in this build.

Verdant Force: It says EACH upkeep. Yes, each.

Gift of Doom: Cheap protection for slimefoot that has the added benefit of killing a saproling you already want dead.

Moldervine Reclamation: Card draw and life for just playing? Of course.

Snake Umbra: Protection and three cards every time you sac a saproling.

Sprout Swarm: Convoke makes this broken.

Some less budget friendly cards (all under $10, but above $1):

Ohran Frostfang: Turns each saproling into a card draw or a removal spell.

Pitiless Plunderer: Solid ramp.

Priest of Forgotten Gods: Under appreciated. This card does everything a black mage should be doing.

Tendershoot Dryad: Can win you the game on its own.

Black Market: Slime foot loves stupid amounts of mana.

Keen Sense: Insane card draw for 1 green mana.

Vraska, Golgari Queen: All abilities are helpful and the ult is just perfect. Tie in an Overrun effect on the same turn and you should win.

Casualties of War: Expensive to cast but worth it. Worth it every time.

Best of luck building.

I'm going to try and list cards that I can find on online shopping sites like TCGplayer for under $2-$3 to help with the budget.

Verdeloth the Ancient is a creature that can be at your top end for the deck that can help you flood the board with saporlings and gives them all a nice boost.

Fungal Sprouting will help populate your board with saporlings.

Nemata, Grove Guardian gives you a mana sink to make saporlings with any extra mana you have and gives you a sac outlet that will pump all of your other saporlings.

Thelon of Havenwood and Sporoloth Ancient are good with the spore counter creatures below making them produce faster.

Psychotrope Thallid will slowly produce saporlings, but this card I listed since it will let you sac saporlings for card draw.

Savage Thallid is in the same boat except his sac ability will help some of your board survive some board wipes.

Pallid Mycoderm is once again another slow rolling spore counters for saporlings, but the sac boost can help you secure a kill.

Sporecrown Thallid is a cheap creature that will give your fungus and saporlings a boost.

Thelonite Hermit can be another creature to boost your board and can be used to make some saporlings.

This looks decently focused for being on a budget. Not sure how much money you want to funnel into this but here are some suggestions.

Expensive upgrades

Assassin's Trophy - one of the best removal spells

Abrupt Decay - uncountable removal for small stuff

Veil of Summer - basically a green cryptic command

budget upgrades

Command Tower - basically a dual land that's about a dollar

Savage Thallid - good utility in a deck with fungi

Winding Constrictor - good snek for counters
