Made_Compleat How about The Masquerade is Over, with Estrid, the Masked and Wargate at the helm? It's far from tuned, but I think it's a respectable first draft--I don't have much Oathbreaker experience. I thought about Sarkhan Unbroken + Genesis Ultimatum, but this one started falling into place.

If I need to issue a challenge, it's to make a really bad deck. Overcosted and useless cards, sabotaging yourself, and generally not able to do anything. Inspired by the Nihilist format I learned about a couple of years ago from 99 Ways to lose (Nihilist), where you make a garbage deck, then switch with your opponent and try to win using the garbage deck they built. Nihilist: Too Angry to Think is my design. Bring that philosophy into Oathbreaker.

Hey,

Ok, lets take this deck for exp(it's the deck you last updated here). From your brief description we know this is a dragon tribal that you intend on winning by turning your beat sticks sideways and saying math is for blockers. You have the deck tagged as casual which means any thing goes really but, as I'm stopping by to help with how to decide on what to cut were saying your going for a 60 card deck. Fist things first we need to ask ours self how am I going to cast my cards, 99.999999% (looking at you dredge players) you need mana to play your cards. Next question does my deck intend on winning my 4 or less? if no then, I'll need north of 20 lands if yes I'll look to south of 20 land. Dragons are tricky to get out +2(lands), am I running more then 1 color yes, how many (+1 each color over the second) +4 and do I need utility lands? no, +0. So, 26 of my 60 card deck will be lands which ones depends on which dargons make the cut. We intend on the deck to be a Tribal deck so personally I like the tribal to be at least 1/3 or how can I call it a tribal deck and I'm intending to smash faces with beat sticks so... Ill need at lest 20. To recap, Dragon tribal deck 26 cards will be land at lest 20 Dragons and 14 other cards. Combat damage (or opponent scooping to sheer terror do to the board state /evil-grin) so, lets make a list of what cards need to hit to make in the deck. Does it help with combat? Does it care bout Dragons? that's the criteria for the deck to make the cut. So something like Atarka, World Render auto include as it checks both boxes but, Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius doesn't check either box so he doesn't make the cut. Something like Crosis, the Purger goes in the maybe board while it hit the I care about combat damage, it doesn't care about dragons but, it is at least a dragon it self. Once you have your 20 beat sticks chosen how can your support cards help? We need to get our game plan on the field now and we have 3 paths to choose from "fair" magic and ramp them out, cheat them into play or control the board. I like to cheat stuff into play but, you seem to have chosen ramp. What ever path you choose b/c you choose look at your core 20 cards can most of them see play b/4 turn 4 or after? If b/4 your 14 support card should be devoted to keeping the core of the deck in play, if the core cards show up after turn 4 then your support cards should be playable early game and make sure you can see mid to late game. Farseek help us get the cord cards out sooner, Sarkhan Unbroken doesn't protect us does ramp but, i would rather see a Scourge of Valkas in its place. By the time we can Sarkhan we want dargons hitting the board instead. To choose what lands we need count up the pips then for what % those pips = they get that many land. for exp (tossing the only 4 copy rule out for this exp) if your deck had 10 Atarka, World Render, 10 Crosis, the Purger and 20 land you have 5 of each basic land of if you had 10 Dragonspeaker Shaman, 10Dromoka, the Eternal and 20 land you would use 10 mountains 5 forest and 5 plains.

Any way hope this helps, GL HF

So, by my count:

Sheesh. That's a load of my memory dumped. Ok, so for the challenge!

Since my favorite tri-color has been done, (Abzan ftw) I'll do my back up: Grixis!

Begard, Deceitful Beggar

Legendary Planeswalker - Begard

~ enters the battlefield under an opponent's control. At the beginning of ~'s controller's endstep, if they did not activate a loyalty ability of ~, they discard a card, lose 5 life, and sacrifice a non-land permanent other than ~.

0: ~'s owner creates a 1/1 Black Rogue creature token with deathtouch and "If this creature would deal damage to a planeswalker, instead, put an additional loyalty counter on it."

-1: ~'s owner draws 2 cards, and creates 2 Treasure Tokens.

-3: ~'s owner may search their library for a card and put it into their hand.

-9: ~'s owner gains control of all permanents ~'s controller owns. All creatures gain Haste until the end of the turn.

4

How do you get to that elusive -9? maybe some proliferate strategies? lol. Good pay off if you can get to it, or a great politic card I think!

There's Sarkhan Unbroken. Naya, Abzan, and Sultai are missing planeswalkers. Still,

Mestoro the Transmuter

Legendary Planeswalker - Mestoro

+2 Search your library for a basic land or instant or sorcery with mana value 2 or less, put it into your hand, then shuffle.

-2 Target creature you control gets +2/+0 until end of turn and target creature you don't control gets -2/-0 until end of turn. Those creatures fight.

-8 Return up to four target nonland permanents to their owners' hands. Those players shuffle their hands into their library and draw that many cards.

Create an Abzan, Naya, or Sultai planeswalker.

Hellkite Charger could replace Skanos Dragonheart? Both these Dragons want to attack to trigger abilities, but Skanos needs other Dragons to make it good, Charger doesn't. Skanos can't pump itself and doesn't have evasion, Charger can be part of a combo Skanos can't. Thrakkus the Butcher is a better five drop Dragon with trample who pumps itself as well as all other Dragons you control.

There's another combo you could add that creates infinite Dragons with Astral Dragon and the enabler Cursed Mirror provides a wincon, haste to attack. Could of course have other wincons: Scourge of Valkas, Dragon Tempest or Warstorm Surge. Mirror is a good card, you wouldn't just be adding it for the combo, it's a mana rock that if it becomes a Dragon when it enters then Miirym can copy it.

When you control Cursed Mirror that's not a creature have Astral Dragon enter and copy Mirror. The Mirror tokens then enter as Astral and copy original Mirror that's not a creature and repeat. This creates a loop of Astral and Mirror making copies of each other, each copy of Mirror is a 4/4 Astral Dragon with haste. To break the loop stop copying Mirror with Astral, copy something else.

Sarkhan Unbroken would be another fine upgrade, but not when on a budget. $25 for a nonDragon creature card when on a budget seems not a good use of funds. For $25 you could improve the manabase with many land upgrades Reflecting Pool, more Pain lands (Yavimaya Coast, Shivan Reef), some Bond lands (Spire Garden), some Filter lands (Flooded Grove) or some Check lands (Sulfur Falls, Rootbound Crag). In my opinion when on a budget allocating some of the budget for good lands is more important than adding flashy cards such as Sarkhan.

Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner is less powerful than Sarkhan, but it's also less than $2. Kiora can still do much work as another Temur Ascendancy draw effect as well as give you 7 turns of ramp that can untap any permanent including Sol Ring or an Orb.

Shamanic Revelation could be a cut for some lower mana cost draw since you're more likely to have a higher power Dragon then that same number of Dragon creatures. That's what makes Return of the Wildspeaker and Rishkar's Expertise good draw with Dragons is they have high power. Revelation is better when playing little tribal creatures such as Elves which tend to have quantity of creatures rather than single creature with high power.

multimedia I like the sound of Hellkite Charger, just need to think which card it should replace. Another card I'm thinking maybe is Sarkhan Unbroken

Hey Eldmoi, thanks for the info. There's a quite a bit I would recommend optimizing. The long story short is that most of the dragons I'd recommend are already on my budget primer that you've seen and my super budget deck list that was part of the primer but is also available here if you're interested here.

First of all, you need to make sure your deck has a decent amount of ramp to cast your awesome dragons within a reasonable amount of time. If you are on a budget then I'd recommend Cultivate, Kodama's Reach, and Sakura-Tribe Elder at the very least. Other options for cheap ramp are Farseek, Wild Growth, and Fertile Ground. If you want to further optimize ramp, then adding in Nature's Lore and Three Visits on top of some forest based shock lands (e.g. Stomping Ground or triomes (e.g. Ziatora's Proving Ground would be ideal.

Second, you want to optimize your mana base by minimizing the number of taplands and ensuring you have the colors you need. Any tap lands that tap for only 2 colors (e.g. guild gates) could safely be dropped for basic lands. Tri-lands like you mentioned are decent enough to start off, because they can tap for 3 colors, but even those are suboptimal in the face of options like Dragonskull Summit and Blood Crypt. Furthermore, almost 50% of your deck requires red mana, so I'd ensure your lands reflects that.

Regarding the planeswalkers you have, I'd say Sarkhan, Fireblood is the most useful (distantly followed by Sarkhan Unbroken and Kiora, Master of the Depths). I'd consider cutting the others.

Some things off the top of my head for instants and sorceries: I would consider Crucible of Fire to be a win more card. Lozhan, Dragons' Legacy is almost a strictly better Sarkhan's Unsealing. Damn and Farewell are really good board wipes that aren't as mana intensive as some you're running. Garruk's Uprising is a very potent form of card draw. Monster Manual is probably better than Thran Temporal Gateway in most cases.

Finally the dragons. There are so many good dragons to consider, many of which I've mentioned in my deck primer, and many of which are available on most dragon lists online, that I'll focus on highlighting dragons I would recommend removing:

  • Acid-Spewer Dragon - Overcosted and doesn't do much. Deathtouch isn't as useful on a dragon that should be big enough to kill most thing it hits in the first place.

  • Backdraft Hellkite - Most instant and sorceries you have are too expensive or are simply aren't as immediately useful (e.g. don't want to board wipe your own dragons). The most useful ones you run are removal, but at that point you can just play dragons that can inherently remove things like Steel Hellkite.

  • Crosis, the Purger - Hard to save mana to take advantage of its effect. It'll feel bad to take advantage of its effect in casual metas anyways. If you really want to run a dragon like this then Teneb, the Harvester might be more fitting but even then I wouldn't really recommend it, because of the mana investment needed to make it work.

  • Dragonmaster Outcast - Not a good early game play and easy to kill later on.

  • Dream Pillager - This dragon is overcosted and is mostly a means of pseudo card draw. I'd just play an actual card draw card instead like Ancient Craving or Sign in Blood or Rishkar's Expertise.

  • Kargan Dragonlord - Costs too much to do too little. We have so many dragon options, even in budget decks, that vanilla dragons simply aren't worth it.

  • Malfegor - Discarding our hand isn't good to do unless it involves redrawing more cards (e.g. Knollspine Dragon).

  • Necromaster Dragon - Summoning vanilla 2/2 zombie tokens for 2 mana isn't good value in a dragon deck, and you have to go through combat to get it off. In a world where Ancient Gold Dragon exists, it's hard to justify an effect like this. Dragon Broodmother and Lathliss, Dragon Queen and Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm would be far more effective token generators.

There's always more we could do to optimize any deck, including mine for sure, so I'd be happy to comment more later if you'd like. But I also want to emphasize that as long as you and your playgroup are having fun, you really can't go wrong :)

I really like the design (plus the art you chose fits the name pretty well)!

I do wonder if the ultimate could be adjusted a bit, though. It seems rather weak for a 4.5 mana planeswalker that takes 4.5 turns to reach its ultimate (compare to Venser, the Sojourner or Sarkhan Unbroken or even Ajani Vengeant).
