River Kelpie

Creature — Beast

Whenever River Kelpie or another permanent enters the battlefield from a graveyard, draw a card.

Whenever a player casts a spell from a graveyard, draw a card.

Persist (When this creature is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.)

Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate the help on this deck as for The Scarab God I'd replace Havengul Lich since Scarab does his job better. For Secrets of the Dead I run River Kelpie since it does the same effect but for each player not just my own and can also combo with mikeaus, the unhallowed if you have a sac outlet. For the Liliana's Reaver I'd run Mindleech Ghoul as it's faster to get cards out of all my opponents hands.

I'm glad you love the deck elliotmward97!! I've had her for many years and I love her dearly. I even love Marchesa enough to have a five-color "Secret Marchesa" deck: Special Snowflakes. My playgroup ranges from precons and upgraded precons to "powerful casual" and this deck seems to hang with their stronger decks very well. It's certainly not cEDH, nor would I really want it to be. One of the reasons I kept the Threaten subtheme going string from it's budget days.

As far as "very little" card draw...

Bloodtracker, Braids, Arisen Nightmare, Grim Haruspex, River Kelpie, Sage of Fables, Scorn-Blade Berserker, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Phyrexian Arena, Jeska's Will, Syphon Mind, and Skullclamp are all card draw. That's eleven.

Phyrexian Reclamation is big-time card advantage if my goons keep getting whacked, Viscera Seer is decent card selection when the engine is running, and the non-Treaten theft cards could even be viewed as card-advantage if you squint (looping Thalakos Deceiver and Puppeteer Clique and Keiga, the Tide Star, Zara, Renegade Recruiter getting lucky a few times, Grave Betrayal sticking, etc).

Actually seems above-average to me, elliotmward97.

Perhaps it's light in more pure Concentrate- and Tidings-style draw, but I like the creature-based draw that synergizes with Marchesa. Makes the deck feel like it has more character, and the ceiling is quite high when the engine is rolling. Lower floor, perhaps. I've thought about including more draw effects like Bident of Thassa, Reconnaissance Mission, and Coastal Piracy since the deck swings out so much, but I like where things are right now.

Using your deck as inspiration rn because my partner told me he really wants me to rebuild his Marchesa deck before game night in a few hours! Love the list, I noticed you don't have River Kelpie on any list and I find them to be a powerhouse with Marchesa!

It may seem janky, but many of the sagas work well in Muldrotha

Phyrexian Scriptures

The Cruelty of Gix

The Phasing of Zhalfir

2 of the above are recurring board wipes

Perpetual Timepiece for protection and more mill

Hermit Druid can help the turbo aspect of the deck, especially if you play Thassa's Oracle and related cards

Jeweled Lotus Is helpful for casting/recasting Muldrotha

Some other combos you could consider:

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Melira, Sylvok Outcast combo well with persist creatures like River Kelpie, Woodfall Primus, Glen Elendra Archmage, Putrid Goblin, and Puppeteer Clique as infinite sac targets.

Melira also works with Devoted Druid for infinite mana

Mikaeus also combos with Walking Ballista (and a sac outlet) or Triskelion

Walking Ballista is a good outlet for infinite mana as is Finale of Devastation

Always wanted to make something with this dude but I never knew what to do. This strange pile of cards is beyond interesting. It's a cohesive strategy with focus. Inexpensive but it gives off competitive vibes.

Seeing Anvil of Bogardan and Smokestack as the few assisting artifact engine pieces really lured me into this enchantment based deck. Cut an Island for Null Rod!

Your maybe board:

Treachery yes.

Windfall Yes.

Temporal Trespass YES.

River Kelpie fits the commander and strategy so well.

Everything else I was indifferent about but I have never piloted this list so you would know better than I.

I'm just going to spitball some cards that came to mind that might fit your unique deck design:

Forbid a reusable hard counter that feeds your discard/graveyard strategy.

Retraced Image big fan of basic lands with Back to Basics strategy. This bulk rare from Torment is mono blue ramp.

Academy Ruins and Expedition Map more mono blue ramp.

Long-Term Plans my favorite blue tutor.

Deserted Temple more versatile Minamo.

Awesome brew!

Thank you for the suggestions ClockworkSwordfish. I do like River Kelpie a bit more, mostly because it can trigger off of other people's stuff, and isn't as dependent on my own triggers like Secrets of the Dead. I used Secrets of the Dead for a bit in a Vadrok, Apex of Thunder build I used to run, but it felt too inconsistent.

Progenitor Mimic is pretty cool. I used to run it in an Adrix and Nev, Twincasters deck I had. I think I might've had it in an early version of Brokkos, but removed it because I wanted to keep my Creature CMC peak at 5. I didn't really want many other creatures competing with Brokkos in terms of CMC.

If you're planning to replay Brokkos from your graveyard a few times over the course of a game, then River Kelpie (and maybe Secrets of the Dead?) could be a handy source of card advantage. Also note that the Kelpie triggers on any player bringing stuff back from the graveyard, so he could really be a windfall depending on your meta.

I also can't help but wonder how crazy a Progenitor Mimic could get in such a build.

Thanks for commenting, Lord_of_Cardboard!

This deck would do exceptionally well against a Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger deck. This is for the same reason that cards like Jace's Archivist do so well in the deck: if you have have Muldrotha on the battlefield, any cards you discard might as well still be in your hand cause you can simply replay them from your graveyard. If anything, an opposing Kroxa player is almost helping you by disrupting your other opponents' hands.

As for a budget version of the deck, here's some advice on budget options and replacements. Just note that this is advice specific to my Muldrotha deck, i.e., advice for the big mana and big X-spell strategy. If you'd rather play a more typical creature-based, swing-to-kill type deck, there may be better Muldrotha lists to look at.

The mana base makes up a large portion of the deck's budget, and I would leave that mostly up to your own discretion. Just keep in mind that fetch lands like Evolving Wilds and slow fetches like Bad River are good for being replayed every turn with Muldrotha. Also, for a budget version of the deck, it's important to run more basics than I do since you'll probably need to fetch more with your ramp. Cycle lands like Lonely Sandbar, Tranquil Thicket, and Barren Moor are fantastic, especially with Life from the Loam. Some other good options:

Which brings me to another point: if I had to pick one somewhat expensive card that's worth putting in a budget Muldrotha deck, it's this one. It's a one-card value engine, giving you card draw, mill, and lands. And depending on what utility lands you choose to run, it can do a whole lot more. And if you're worried about Kroxa in your meta, Life from the Loam is a great counter to it, allowing you to fill your hand with lands to discard.

Now to address key cards for the deck's "big mana" strategy. Important cards for generating a lot of mana include Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Cabal Coffers, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Crypt Ghast, and Nyxbloom Ancient. You could just replace these cards with normal ramp; casting X-spells for X=10 is still good and easy to accomplish without these cards. If that's unsatisfying for you, you could consider options like Zendikar Resurgent and Mana Reflection. Unfortunately there aren't many great cheap options for producing a lot of mana. This is an important part of the deck though, so it's up to you if it's worth spending some extra money on it.

To avoid this comment being any more lengthy than it already is, here's an extensive list of some budget alternatives for the deck. The great thing about Muldrotha is that being able to replay removal makes a lot of sub-par removal actually pretty good, so it's pretty budget friendly.

Win-Conditions: What's in the deck isn't too expensive, but here's some cheaper options.

Control and other good stuff:

If you have any other questions about budget options, let me know. I'm always happy to help!
