Portal to Phyrexia

Artifact

When Portal to Phyrexia enters the battlefield, each opponent sacrifices three creatures.

At the beginning of your upkeep, put target creature card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. It's a Phyrexian in addition to its other types.

I'm having a lot more fun with this deck than I thought I would. Super janky though. Far too helpless in the first couple turns. But if it hits on turn 4 or 5 it's got real juice.

Tinkered with it a bit. Virtue of Persistence and Toxrill, the Corrosive feel a bit disappointing when I hit them from an Etali or a Rigging. They're weak as control cards too so I felt like swapping in Chaotic Transformation that is also a weak control card but is better at using the underwhelming Insect or Blood tokens from Old Rutstein (and hitting a Portal to Phyrexia from transforming a blood token is a much better control payoff than Toxrill). I almost want two Transformations in the deck but I have a nagging feeling that Gix's Command is important and I don't want to cut one of the other permanents for it.

Liliana of the Veil feels a bit better as a control card. Usually I don't want to discard a card unless I have a Portal in play, but if I have the option of transforming Lili into a Nissa later I can stomach passing without using her abilities for a while if I don't want the discard.

I'm also testing out one Anzrag, the Quake-Mole. It also enables the Rigging trigger on cheap mana, and it's a unique angle of threat that can get bonus Rigging tokens enabled. Olivia, Crimson Bride likes Anzrag too. Atraxa loves getting extra attacks. But even with all that if it's stuck on its own it doesn't have an ability that gets you unstuck like a Sheoldred or a Bramble Familiar or even a Shakedown Heavy can. Could easily be not good enough. The caves work really well. Playing the Invasion of Alara  Flip or hard casting the Atraxa is a bit hard but still consistent if you plan out your land plays carefully. Swapped out a couple Promising Vein for the Volatile Fault as the treasures are better for the deck than the basic land, and the extra ability to kill an opponent's man land is something that the deck might as well have as an option.

But overall this deck just wants to pull off a big Rigging play and then bully the opponent from there as hard as it can. If you need more than spot control to own the combats might as well concede.

I should probably slot in Heroic Intervention. The nice thing about this deck is that even if a combo piece is destroyed, it's fairly easy to recur it thanks to Glissa, the Traitor. And I'm running Foundry Inspector as my primary cost reduction. I could probably add in Cloud Key for some redundancy. I've actually tried Semblance Anvil before, and I just wasn't as big a fan of it.

Deathsprout I can cut. Probably to add in some more reliable ramp or removal.

Phyrexian Fleshgorger is a remnant of when I was running a Birthing Pod/Dross Scorpion combo chain in the deck, since I needed a good seven drop that could either be a threat or fodder. With cards like Cranial Plating or Tarrian's Soulcleaver, it can get stupid big and really hard to interact with short of a boardwipe.

Portal to Phyrexia is a pet/favorite card of mine in this deck. It's a splashy finish, and has some thematic/lore wins attached. If you read some of my other deck primers, you'll see that I'm a follower of the Vorthos/lore playstyle, so I sometimes end up playing some cards that might be better thematically rather than actually effective haha.

SteelSentry on Why Do Recent Sacrifice Effects …

I think it's probably my favorite "super edict" variant they've used so far, actually. Soul Shatter and it's ilk have always been a feel bad when I get hit with them, it's like getting your True-Name Nemesis getting Council's Judgmented in legacy of yesteryear. It's not like they've moved away from printing traditional sacrifice effects, but watching Standard and hearing someone say "I can get a Portal to Phyrexia here, but it doesn't even do anything on this board" makes me appreciate 'sacrifice a good creature' effects.

Have you considered Emergence Zone, Crystal Vein, City of Traitors or Urza's Saga for your land base? A few Tutors and choice card draw pieces like Ring of Three Wishes, The One Ring, Planar Bridge, Planar Portal & Citanul Flute could help you quickly outvalue your opponents with your Commander's ability, as could Ramp pieces like Ashnod's Altar & Doubling Cube. Portal to Phyrexia & Grimoire of the Dead could potentially win some games here as well, depending on the pod!

How about Unmarked Grave? It can find and toss any non-legendary card, not just creatures. (Looking mostly at Portal to Phyrexia for this one, but it can grab almost all of your big artifacts.)

Portal to Phyrexia is probably the best target in the game for daretti's ultimate.

You should definitely run Goblin Welder and Goblin Engineer. They are like a cheaper master transmuter in red. Wurmcoil Engine is one of the best big artifact creatures red has access to. I would consider using it. It's good after board wipes. If you can triple it you'll still have 18 power on an empty board if you wrath.

I would add Nevinyrral's Disk

That signature spell looks like it's gonna be a nightmare for us. Good pick
