Nyx Lotus

Legendary Artifact

Nyx Lotus enters the battlefield tapped.

: Choose a colour. Add an amount of mana of that colour equal to your devotion to that colour. (Your devotion to a colour is the number of mana symbols of that colour in the mana costs of permanents you control.)

Hey Indie,

First off I really like the lands you have assembled and the suggestions from SufferFromEDHD are all good.

You are definitely going to want an artifact ramp package.

Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone, Gilded Lotus, Thran Dynamo

Special Mention to Nyx Lotus, it could be good being in mono black. and Jeweled Lotus, pays for your commander for free on turn 1 even.

Sword of the Animist is not bad ramp at all and buffs yours rats

Commander's Plate might be cute.

Liliana of the Dark Realms, makes sure you always get a land drop and could make your swamps tap for four.

Chittering Witch if your playing with more opponents.

Crypt Ghast is sort of ramp, but doubles your swamps. Very good in mono black.

Dauthi Voidwalker is not on theme at all but is just sooo much value in a two cost card I have to recommend it.

God-Eternal Bontu is excellent draw power in the right situation.

Dont forget you can run any number of Relentless Rats

Gray Merchant of Asphodel will heal you up a lot and hurt your opponents

Krav, the Unredeemed is also great card draw.

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, has card draw, removal, and proliferate all on one card

Deadly Rollick, potentially free removal

Defile, cheap good removal

Thrilling Encore saves you from a board wipe or lets you bring everything back after sacrificing it all to like God-Eternal Bontu

Phyrexian Arena some ok card draw.

Bojuka Bog if you are worried about graveyards

Mutilate, a good board wipe in mono black

Night's Whisper, Read the Bones, Sign in Blood, are a great draw package for mono black

Toxic Deluge a great board wipe for when things need resetting, and you could follow with Thrilling Encore and get it all back

Syphon Mind is great draw if your playing with more players

Victimize - is really really strong, get rid of one weak thing for two of your best things

Yawgmoth's Will - lets you treat your graveyard like your hand for a turn

Lord Skitter, Sewer King makes rats

Marrow-Gnawer - lets you make lots of rats

Infectious Inquiry - good draw and gives poison

Ogre Slumlord - makes rats when your creatures or your opponents creatures die.

Tangled Colony - if your opponent has to block it or it dies to like Blasphemous Act will make you rats

Vraska's Fall removal and poison counter

Drown in Ichor removal and poison

Bontu's Monument all your creatures cost less

Rat Colony can have any number and they buff themselves, and cost less mana than Relentless Rats

Typhoid Rats deathtouch rat opponents wont want to block

Crypt Rats can board wipe but can also win the game if you give it infect, doesnt work with your commander because toxic specifies combat damage but does work if you give it infect and deal damage with it's ability.

Ratcatcher tutors rats, and gives you card advantage

Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm - buffs your rats and lets you get rats back

Wave of Rats has blitz and reanimates itself

Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni rat that steals opponents stuff

Nashi, Moon Sage's Scion rat that steals opponents stuff

Adaptive Automaton is a rat and buffs rats

Okiba-Gang Shinobi rat makes opponents discard and has ninjutsu

Filth gives all your rats swampwalk pairs well with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Dark Ritual lets your get a head start or some extra mana a turn you need it

Tainted Strike instant speed infect, funny in multiplayer because you can use it on anyone's creatures.

Phyresis Outbreak gives poison and might kill opponents creatures

Feed the Swarm enchantment removal in black

Vat Emergence gets a creature back and proliferates

Spread the Sickness destroys a creatures and proliferates

Pact of the Serpent strong tribal card draw

Living Death swap graveyards with battlefields, great after sacrificing your whole board to draw cards

Skullclamp sack small rats for card draw

Thrumming Stone if you go the Relentless Rats or Rat Colony route

Coat of Arms your rats will be huge

Bolas's Citadel this card is dumb lol, lots of casting power and then you hit Gray Merchant of Asphodel and keep going lol

Icon of Ancestry kinda draw buffs rats...is ok

Contagion Engine proliferate twice each time you activate

Eldrazi Monument gives creatures flying indestructible and +1/+1

Grafted Exoskeleton gives a creature infect, great with Crypt Rats

Sword of Truth and Justice proliferate sword

Bad Moon buff all black creatures, opponents too

Phyresis gives infect again good with Crypt Rats

Greed card draw

Vraska, Betrayal's Sting proliferate planes walker

I know that's a lot but hopefully gave you some ideas to work with!

ShadowMasterNLThank you for your answer!

I was thinking of cabal coffers, but I also have Nyx Lotus that gives me amount of mana = to devotion and my planeswalker Liliana of the Dark Realms also gives me an emblem that each swamp gives me 4 manas instead of one, so I thought i was already running enough mana with all that and the others you mentionned prior lmao. I decided that adding other cards instead was more pertinent. :) but i did consider Cabal Coffers for a while!

As for Exsanguinate it's been on the back of my mind for a while but I don't have a lot of lifegain element in the deck so I could'nt decide if it was worth it because I will also be trying to kill my opponents early with the poison counters, but it is true that having that much mana could actually make it worth it. It will also go in the maybeboard lmao.

Yeah I understand how well Tergrid, God of Fright  Flipcan fit with my deck/commander, but I was also wondering about the gains for running this 5 mana card in this deck because I am already running Scion of Darkness which seemed like a better similar option at first because of its base power/defense and the trample factor, but maybe I am wrong because Menace is also a very good perk and my CMC would be better with a 5 instead of an 8 mana card probably!?

I also have a bunch of artifacts I would like to integrate to it just standing in my maybeboard to either lower the summon cast of my commander or to cast my commander from my hand instead of the commander zone in case of removal since I play against a lot of azorius control decks lmao!

Anyways all this to say, I have a hard time making cuts actually (decision paralysis lmao). So if you have some pointers for cuts I could make, that would also be interesting, and I always love to know the reason why if you find you have the time.

Sorry for the rambling. And I appreciate your time and input. XD

cool deck, love Daretti!

Krark-Clan Ironworks goes great in an artifact recursion deck, and works especially well with daretti's -10. Pyrite Spellbomb is some extra repeatable draw/ removal, and Reckless Fireweaver is a good way to whittle opponents down over the course of the game :D

Some Honorable mentions:

Spectacular Showdown is also awesome- it can goad all opponents while adding double strike counters to all your creatures, which won't count towards Rakdos's non-demon count. Nyx Lotus seems like it may do more for you than Belbe's Portal, since Belbe's effect only works for cheating out specific creatures, but Nyx could be used to pay for anything in the deck!

77hi77 Yep, you’re pretty close with your summary of the game plan! I’d amend the summary statement to: We play cards that maximize the potential of our boardstate and we’re making sure our opponents' board states are as slim as ours.

Ritual effects are strong in the list because they allow the deck to efficiently generate resources beyond what Rakdos the Defiler lets us maintain on board with lands. Lands are more important in the deck UNTIL you reach a saturation point of draw/loot/lands in the deck where you consistently have 3 on board by turn 3. After that, the value of ritual effects increases significantly, since we’d prefer to top deck those instead. For my deck, 34 lands was that number, but each person should adjust their list depending on the efficiency and quantity of draw and loot cards played. If there were more cards like Lotus Vale, Treasonous Ogre, and Rakdos, Lord of Riots, I would play those over ritual effects because they are mana dense, repeatable sources of advantage instead of guaranteed temporary effects.

I changed the summary statement to say “cards that maximize the potential of our boardstate” because it better captures the breadth of effects we want. Rituals maximize the potential of limited on board mana resources, and likewise we want cards that do the same thing for other deck functions. Cards like Fiery Emancipation and Archfiend of Despair multiply the value of our creatures and damage effects, which also means they also increase the value of reanimation spells as a result. Moraug, Fury of Akoum turns land drops into “free” extra combat spells, adding more value to drawing lands in the deck. Mizzix's Mastery doubles the use of instants and sorceries, etc. Make each non-demon card add as much value as you can!

With my list, I tried to create a deck that could match pace with other optimized high power lists, which meant prioritizing getting Rakdos and other resource denial pieces out asap, so that’s why I don’t run cards like Nyx Lotus and Gilded Lotus, even though they fit the kind of cards that are perfect for Rakdos (and are much better than rituals). You have to ask yourself what the speed of the tables you play at is to see if you can afford the time to set up higher value boardstate options.

77hi77, it makes me so excited to hear that you've caught the Rakdos bug and that my decklist and primer has helped inspire you to make Rakdos your own! You've made my day. He's such an unconventional powerhouse, and it's fun to watch players' faces when they realize the game state has suddenly shifted against them dramatically.

Your comment got me thinking about how to best verbalize the theory behind the deck, and when I began typing my response, I realized I had a lot more to say on the topic of "how the deck doesn't fall behind" when it attacks with Rakdos than I thought I would. So instead of replying with a book of text in the comments here, I created a new section in the primer called "Rakdos Game Theory". If you give it a read through, it should help you understand how I've attempted to solve the issue of how to survive attacking that you commented about.

I'd love to hear more about the direction you're taking your deck, but if you're not ready to share yet, send me a link to your deck when you are! The basics of not falling behind when you attack with Rakdos are mana density, card efficiency, and resource denial. If you want to build Rakdos on a budget, you'll want effects that packs as much mana onto each permanent as possible. Think Gilded Lotus, Everflowing Chalice, Chromatic Orrery, Sceptre of Eternal Glory, Dreamstone Hedron, Nyx Lotus, Rakdos Carnarium, Everglades, Dormant Volcano, stuff like that. That way, sacrificing hurts less because the bulk of your mana stays on a single permanent. Token producers like Wand of Orcus and Abhorrent Overlord are also excellent so that you can sacrifice the free value permanents instead of critical resources. Finally, play symmetrical table hate pieces like Pox, Shadowgrange Archfiend, Tectonic Hellion, Death Cloud, Insurrection, and Curse of the Cabal to keep everyone low on resources like you are. If you can afford them, the trio of It That Betrays, Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip, and The Reaver Cleaver are in my opinion mandatory in any list that wants to prioritize attacking with Rakdos.

Nyx Lotus and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx the best devotion cards in the EDH library.

Thassa's Rebuff oh theme.

Thassa, God of the Sea seems good.

Rayne, Academy Chancellor and Otawara, Soaring City should be in the main.

As you go for the Relentless Rats im missing Thrumming Stone in here.

Since you r in mono black and with relentless rats having 2 black mana in its cost, Nyx Lotus is a pretty good mana rock. Im not a big fan of Heraldic Banner in here. With the rats pumping themselves, the +1/+0 really isnt needed

For instant removal, maybe Tragic Slip, Slaughter Pact, Defile.. there is so much good stuff in black.

for a comeback, maybe Living Death
