No Escape

Instant

Counter target creature or planeswalker spell. If that spell is countered this way, exile it instead of putting it into its owner's graveyard.

Scry 1. (Look at the top card of your library. You may put that card on the bottom of your library.)

I think Claim the Firstborn will make it into the sideboard when I build one. I was thinking more along the lines of No Escape or the post rotation variant Deny the Divine.

Yidaro, Wandering Monster is such a cool card to build around. I cut it last minute though. There's a lot to love especially with cycling. However, I chose to go another route for the pseudo hexproof. Imagine comboing to get 1 of your 2 creatures out and they murder it. Basically a scoop at that point.

NV_1980 on Lu Xun, Scholar General - Budget Voltron (RETIRED)

Hi,

This has got to be the most unconventional voltron deck we have ever laid our eyes on. And it's budget too! Kudos for building this, we applaud you! Some recommendations we would have:

  • Sigil of Sleep: attaches an Unsummon/Boomerang to Lu that's triggered whenever he damages someone. We thought this would be a good replacement for Clockspinning.
  • Void Shatter: does almost the same as No Escape but works against any spell.
  • Vanishing: this is extremely useful when someone casts untargeted removal like a wipe. Lu will just phase out until just before your next untap phase and thus remain unaffected. Only drawback is that he cannot be used as a blocker until then. Still awesome though, right?

Keep up the nice brews and let us know how this deck plays.

All the best and regards,

Mrs. and Mr. NV_1980

Hey, good budget version of Niv.

Ophidian Eye is another combo enchantment to enchant Niv with. Consider cutting Curse of the Bloody Tome for Eye? With the difficult color casting cost of Niv and the less than ideal color fixing in the manabase consider Chromatic Lantern? To stay within the budget consider cutting That Which Was Taken for Lantern?

To help with color fixing in the manabase there's some budget lands to consider adding. Sulfur Falls, Shivan Reef, Wandering Fumarole, Ash Barrens, Grixis Panorama. These lands can help game play a lot more than $9 Caged Sun can. To stay within budget consider cutting Sun for these lands?

Evolve is not a very good mechanic in Commander because you want to consistently cast an Evolve creature early game to evolve as you cast other creatures. Consistently you're not going to have an Evolve creature to cast early and playing one mid/late game is not doing much. Evolve is a mechanic that benefits much with having 4x of same creatures in a deck which is not Commander. Consider cutting some creatures for a few more draw spells? Brainstorm, Opt, Frantic Search, Faithless Looting are budget good draw spells. Consider cutting Cloudfin Raptor, Simic Fluxmage, Petrahydrox, Ral's Staticaster for these draw spells?

Izzet colors at a budget are at a disadvantage for tutors, but there's some good cards that can copy an opponents tutor when cast letting you also tutor. Expansion / Explosion, Reverberate, Dualcaster Mage. These spells could also copy your own spell when you cast it. Consider cutting Wave of Indifference, Sundering Stroke and Reckless Air Strike for these copy spells? Talisman of Creativity and Izzet Signet are good budget two drop mana rocks. They could replace Heraldic Banner and Spinning Wheel.

In Commander you have access to good budget counterspells that don't have a restriction: Counterspell, Wizard's Retort, Arcane Denial. These counterspells could replace Scatter Arc, No Escape, Mystical Dispute.

I offer more advice. Good luck with your deck.

Also, potentially replace Deny with No Escape?

There is a lot of things in this deck that I see can be upgraded or removed.

First, I'll suggest some cards you could put in.

I'll start out with suggesting some boardwipes. Supreme Verdict , Wrath of God , Planar Cleansing , and Flood of Tears are some things you should look into.

More ways to stop the opponent's creatures would help. Lawmage's Binding , Frogify , and Kasmina's Transmutation stop creatures from using their abilities. Immolating Glare , Conclave Tribunal and Path to Exile are also things you should consider.

More counterspells would help too. Counterspell , Disallow , Devious Cover-Up , Void Shatter , and Absorb will stop your opponents from playing the spells they want to play.

I have a couple creature suggestions as well. God-Eternal Kefnet can cast your instants and sorceries twice, and Angel of Grace can save you from the brink.

A few miscellaneous cards that you should consider are Teferi, Hero of Dominaria , Control Magic , Lightning Greaves , and Sphinx's Insight .

Some cards to cut would be:

Flux Channeler , Cancel , No Escape , Dissolve , Blind Obedience (since it has in the card and therefore cannot be used since your commander is ), and Psychic Corrosion .

Hope this helps!

Here are some suggestions:

You would probably benefit the most from a better ramp-package. Since you don't want to bother buying expensive lands, I'd recommend signets (which are really good for fixing colors) and talismans: Orzhov Signet , Azorius Signet , Dimir Signet , Talisman of Progress , Talisman of Dominance , Talisman of Hierarchy , & Smothering Tithe has powerful potential as well.

Ponder and Preordain are extremely powerful in helping you fix colors in the early game. They allow you to dig for the right lands. They're also good at any point in a game. Gitaxian Probe is easy to cast (at basically no cost) since you gain life.

Speaking of life-gain, you have some good ways to gain but no payoffs for it. Alhammarret's Archive seems to combo well with your general. Other ones that come to mind are Graveborn Muse , Greed , and Necropotence

I'd cut Crush Dissent and No Escape for cheaper counterspells. Lower CMC instants give you more opportunities to use them. Swan Song is BROKEN. Counterspell is good. Dispel is amazing but only if you feel your meta is threatening you with counter magic of their own. Muddle the Mixture and Narset's Reversal are unreal. Sometimes you'll misplay them though - they require some experience.

I'd cut Spark Harvest for Swords to Plowshares . Exiling is better than killing (avoids indestructibility), and you can even use swords on yourself if you need life in a pinch.

Diabolic Tutor and Long-Term Plans are cheap to buy. Tutors are necessary in control if you want to effectively answer your opponent's threats.

Dig Through Time might be nice for you, but I can't say for sure. And since you told me you were concerned of decking yourself: Elixir of Immortality

Here are some more expensive cards if you ever wanted to upgrade: Rhystic Study , Phyrexian Arena , Watery Grave , Godless Shrine , & Hallowed Fountain

Izzet generally doesn't struggle against aggro. Especially right now. My advice is that if you want to give this deck flavor, you're looking at Arclight Phoenix , Crackling Drake , Erratic Cyclops , and Guttersnipe .

What I'm curious about is where your removal is. I suggest flipping into midrange. It's flexible and what Izzet does best. For your instants and sorceries I suggest 2x Lava Coil , 3x Jaya's Greeting , 3x Sinister Sabotage , 4x Opt , 2-3x Mission Briefing , and 2x Ral's Outburst over your current noncreature spells. Why aren't you playing at least one copy of Chemister's Insight ?

Your curve is too saturated to be an "aggro" deck, which is best defined by keeping your curve low to outpace your opponent through damage. What you should consider is changing into midrange, as it's more of what this deck is seeking to perform as.

My last note is that you are playing some bad cards. Dreadhorde Twins , Invading Manticore , Bone to Ash , Goblin Gathering , No Escape , Nahiri, Storm of Stone , Sleep Paralysis , and Slimebind . Cards (not already mentioned) that are bad in an aggro deck are Murmuring Mystic , Shivan Dragon (seriously not a good card), your whole counterspell suite, the Chandras, and Izzet Guildgate will slow you down behind your opponents.
